Wembley 89

Post by Andy Waller » Tue Nov 27, 2012 1:11 pm

Being 9 at the time, I can't remember too much about the game, but I can remember there being a "Celebrity" match before the actual game.

Can anyone shed any light on as to who played?!

My dad vaguely remembers George Best playing.
What a hero, What a man...... Ooooh, what a bad foul...

Can remember some folks around me mentioning something about a match before the game but my old man and his mates wanted to stay in the boozer for as long as possible before the game. This meant that we got there just before kick off and just in time to blow up the Norpig!!!

Great day though, total contrast to my first match which was against Aldershot!!!

Torquay Gulls played Bolton Trotters for 30 minutes in an Celebrity Match. George Best apparently played for Torquay.

Sure Best played and Worthy got a hattrick

Pat Rice might have played too, one goalkeeper if I remember correctly was huge but can't remember the name and not sure but Alec Stepney might have been in the other goal

Not sure why but also think Bobby Moore might have played too and the bell is also ringing about Charlie George but not sure

Didn't Stew Francis play as well?

I might have imagined that but I was 11 at the time

I think he did. Funny I only remember Worthy. Good day out. Wembley was a dump and you couldnt buy chips without a sausage.

I think Stu Francis played in the '86 one. If indeed they even had one. Which I vaguely remember, as my dad and uncle dragged us in about 4 hours before kick off, seeing as this may be the only chance to see Wmbley in our lifetime (oh how foolish of them!).

But I remember so little from the games now (I'm sure I used to remember loads) I could be wrong.

There was also a celeb/pro game before the Bristol City Freight Rover game. I think Booby Moore played in a Bolton XI in that one. Only other bloke I can recall from that is Fred Eyre playing for the Bristol City XI.

Worthington definitely played before the Torquay game. I remember seeing my dad the day after and he being quite chuffed at how Franky had lit the place up before hand. His look of disappointment in me when I admitted I'd missed it due to still being in the boozer right up to kick off of the main game, will stay with me forever. :(

I know! Sounds bizarre. I've just found a photo of him in a red Bolton shirt but it's protected so I cant post it :?
It's a Normid one with the panels on the shoulders which suggests it might have been the 1989 game. :conf:
