That's not what I'm saying though. I'm not after Davo chasing down every loose ball and harassing every defender. I'm after him doing the basics... Making a run to try and pull a defender away, marking a near post dart when a cross is coming in. In fact, just generally keeping up with play. So many times, we'll attack down the wings and you see Kevin Davies jogging from the half way line when the balls near the box. We have to go back and start again. He's a statue... And it's not because he can't run.

In fairness he's never made a dart to the front post in his lifetime!

I don't disagree that he is noticeably less mobile these days, or that he can still get around when he wants to, but I do think it is perfectly obvious he can't do that for 90minutes. I'm assuming you don't disagree, and aren't saying Davo is deliberately finishing games with loads left in the tank because he can't be arsed?

If he can't do it for ninety minutes, but is getting picked to start, he has to pace himself to finish 90; he can't be second guessing subs by the manager, or raising an eyebrow at the bench after 60 saying, 'I'm puffed, sorry about that, but you'd better stick someone else on'. Now don't get me wrong, I'm much prefer an hour or half an hour or whatever he can do of Davo at full-whack, but that decision has to come from the manager!

He has his limitations and always has, but it is difficult to see why he attracts the strength of negative feeling that some have for him.

I'm betting a good few central defenders would greet his demise with great joy. Then again, I'm an unashamed KD fan.

TD the trouble is that the KD you often describe, is a rather optimistic description of the player that existed 4 years ago.

The one today is very very different.

Even at his best he had his limitations but made up for a lot of that with workrate and effort.

He was never prolific, never a goalscorer, never pacy. Ever. But he grafted for the team.

The thing now is that he isn't grafting as hard. And so the limitations he has are more exposed.
