My Dad would say Peter Thompson or Roger Hunt (joined at the end of his england career). Can't really comment myself but the Old man likes to reminisce...

And left us for Chelsea!

I'll add in Robert Fleck!
bugger, thought no-one else would think of him, remember his diving header cameo on his debut. It was definitely after he was good for Norwich. £2 mill+ to Chelsea and did F all.

I was chatting to my Premier obsessed son as to how in the past 'famous' players didn't retire @ the top but had to earn their living in the lower reaches of the league. Which got me thinking; what's the best side we could have fielded of players who previously were in their prime, but who later on have turned out in the shirt for us (and in some cases, still done a bloody good job)?
Here's a start (with apologies for the inclusion of former rags, some dodgy positioning, and also if anything like this has been posted before).

*****************Peter Shilton
***Phil Neal*********************Tony Dunne
************Hierro******John McGovern***********
**Youri Djorkaeff****Roger Hunt*****Peter Beardsley
Willie Morgan*******Nic Anelka*********Peter Thompson
A significant number of those were very, very good when they played for us, and another lot very decent...

Good

Hierro
Djorkaeff
Anelka
Peter (God) Thompson - one of our best ever buys...

Decent

Dunne
Hunt
Morgan

And the rest mostly did all right... But not Beardsley...

Good team... :D

Gowling for sure.

Not sure about Frank. Division 1 top goalscorer with us in 79/80 suggests he was still pretty good at that time.
EUFA Golden Boot winner he was.
Correct.

Bit harsh on Beardsley to a certain extent, seem to remember he changed the game when coming on at Coventry, inspiring a comeback from 2-0 down to 2-2 and then scored in midweek at Barnsley. Soon went downhill after a fall out with Todd though and he was dropped to the reserves.

A bonus point for anyone who can name which player made his debut for the reserves on the same night as Beardsley (a 3-1 defeat to Port Vale at Leigh on the same night Newcastle were playing away to Barcelona, which sparked a bit of national interest with the contrast).

Mike Doyle & Peter Barnes both played at International level more than once.

Sadly, both were pretty bobbins by the time they came to us. Barnes came twice and was crap in both periods

You have no real defenders in there - so I suggest Charlie Hurley.

A god in Sunderland and Dublin.

And did his job for us

I don't think you've got the point, really, have you ?!

Take Peter Shilton - "after he was good ... he played for us".

Or Peter Beardsley, or Jardel, or (even tho he was pretty good with us he'd been a Worls beater perviously) Hierro & Djorkaev.

It really doesn't fit Cahill, now does it ?
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
"I understand you are a very good footballer" ... "I try".

Ermmmm, people might not agree with this and I know we had him on loan but he did win the league with Blackburn I think so here goes.

Surely, Ripley should be in the 'after they played for us, they were good thread'? He was only a kid when we had him on loan. He was certainly good for our then level and created a goal within about 15 seconds of his debut iirc.

Nope. Can't give a clue or it'll be proper obvious. In his pomp at the same time as Nolan though.
