Those two up there, pages back, weren't me. When I first moved back to London I stayed at mrkint's. Seems he went to sign in here on his phone today and I was still saved or something. It threw me the most that I didn't get to see the stuff that he'd written, because 'I''d written it, so I didn't recognise it and oh god I don't know...

Just watched two of the few players who played in the 53 Cup Final on TV. Blackpool's Cyril Robinson (the only one of them still alive) and our Dougie Holden. Absolute sickener that was for me, to be winning 3-1 and lose 4-3. They should never have got their third goal but Stan Hanson dropped a real soft cross for Mortensen to toe-poke it in. Sixty years ago today (although it was on a Saturday of course). Revenge on the cards this weekend?

They always talk about it as the Matthews final, but seldom mention the wing half marking him was Eric Bell, who suffered a severe leg injury early doors and could not keep the pace. No substitutes in those days. That was the first game I saw the Wanderers on tv - we'd just bought it for the coronation. I think Eric died recently.

It was actually Tommy Banks's job to mark Mathews, Monty, and Bell, the inside forward (Mortensen). Effectively, losing a defender we couldn't replace ( as you say, pre sub days) when defending a 3-1 lead was a tragedy. Bell was a hero for carrying on with a bad injury,( he actually scored didn't he, whilst carrying a leg, but it was doubtless the injury that cost us in the end.

Hang on, Tango. It depends on how you set the defence up. Now i looked back at TW and found the following when Eric's death was announced:

Very sad. Eric had to play on injured because subs weren't allowed back then. Total hero when he scored and we thought it was in the bag. Trying to mark Mathews with a limping player was mission impossible and the main reason we lost. Eric was left half back and had no chance. Great loss to football. Part of a legendary side:

Hanson, Ball, Banks, Wheeler Barrass, Bell. Holden Moir, Lofthouse, Hassall and Langton.

R.I.P and commiserations to his family.

You can't have it both ways! Actually they moved Eric to left wing after he tore the hamstring, hence he was able to score. He was a hero - unsung because of Matthews.

Got to be confident, we can do it! Hope those that are attending the match at the Reebok have a great time. If we somehow don't make the playoffs, we have had a great season anyways and I couldn't be more proud of our Bolton Wanderers.

They looked awful at Brighton but I know every game is different and this league is so unpredictable that we can't look at that game and say we're gonna batter them as well. That said, anything other than three points today would be shit. Not just because of our predicament but because its Blackpool at home and our home form is incredible. One last hurdle, we have to do it. COYWM!!

Obviously Blackpool have a few players that worry me. Ince stands out, as does Sylvestre. Dicko seems to get on the scoresheet now and then too and looks a threat.
