Beckford was Leicester's highest earner? No wonder my Fox-following friend was delighted in our interest...

Yeah, I don't think he's the goalscorer we need, especially at this point in his career. He's 30, lost some of the pace he once had and doesn't seem to have much passion. I'd rather go with Sharp, even if he was twice as expensive. I think he'd be a much better player for us.

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
Beckford is a better finisher than we have at the club currently. So that ticks a big box.
My only issue with it is that he's nearly 30 and £1M plus high wages (though reduced from what he earned at Leicester) means he has to perform well here, as there is little if any sell on value. As said by others his attitude and desire have not always been top notch but we need a goalscorer. There aren't many of those around.
In terms of comparison with Sharp, last season Beckford got 8 in 21 for a struggling Huddersfield, Sharp got 11 in 31 for Notts Forest.
I'd say there isn't an awful lot in it......

That young shaver from Sheffield Weds is now done and dusted.
Bolton Wanderers have completed the signing of 18-year-old full-back Hayden White after agreeing a compensation package with Sheffield Wednesday.
Welcome to Bolton Hayden!

I think it reflects that there aren't many goalscorers around. Certainly not in our price range. Beckford is probably, one of the best finishers available to us that is affordable.throwawayboltonian wrote:I hope so, it just seems an unusually risky move for Dougie as he seems to prefer fairly promising young or foreign players, relative unknowns. We'll see what happens, he may hit the ground running and turn into a favourite but I'm somewhat skeptical due to his (apparent from previous clubs) attitude.BWFC_Insane wrote:Beckford is a better finisher than we have at the club currently. I guess Dougie believes he can manage his personality suitably.

A drill-down on those figures, via Soccerway:BWFC_Insane wrote:In terms of comparison with Sharp, last season Beckford got 8 in 21 for a struggling Huddersfield, Sharp got 11 in 31 for Notts {sic} Forest.
Of Beckford's 21 league appearances, he started 14, came on in 7 and was subbed off in 4. (He was also an unused sub 7 times.) In total, he played 1359 league minutes for Town last season, scoring 8 goals, one every 169.8 minutes.
Of Sharp's 39 (not 31) league appearances, he started 30, came on in 9 and was subbed off in 6. (He was also an unused sub 12 times.) In total, he played 2738 league minutes for Forest last season, scoring 10 goals, one every 273.8 minutes.
Indeed, Sharp didn't score after Feb 2, drawing blanks in his last dozen appearances despite Forest's run into play-off contention. Mind you, after getting injured in mid-Nov for a month, Beckford didn't score in 11 league games before a flurry of five in the final four fixtures.
Qualitatively, I would guess that Sharp adds more all-round battling qualities etc, while Beckford is more the lone wolf front-runner.

So Beckford was better than 1 in 2 at Huddersfield?
Yeah... Let's look elsewhere.

12 for Barnsley up to January and another 12 for West Ham after they signed him.
24 goals in 42 games all told.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
That's when we were chasing Europe. If you're as old as I am, you may also be able to remember Phil Neal haggling over £1,000 in Trevor Morgan's fee. So it depends where you cut it, but I'm guessing you won't get a piratical throb-on about this, from a reputable Wolves journo on Twitter: Wolves put Jamie O'Hara, Stephen Ward, Karl Henry & Roger Johnson on transfer list. Any takers?Il Pirate wrote:I know it's an old man talking bollox; but I can't get as exited about this thread as I used to. The days when you would log on and think feck me! We've signed Campo! It was all downhill for poor Rodger after that article. I wouldnt touch a defender who has been relegated three times, never mind how good he was once upon a time..

I wouldn't take any of those Wolves players. Been on a downward spiral for a few years and not one of them showed any kind of spirit, or fight. (Edit: Unless it was with their own players at Molineux)
Besides that, they're all shit at football too. So nah. Not for me

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
The four of them are all earning top money, but they are all very much at the centre of the Wolves decline. O'Hara being lazy, Ward being terrible, Henry and Johnson being straight up disruptive bordering on mutiny. Cnuts the lot of them. Stay well clear!
O'Hara used to be decent, Johnson also. At their best they would be fine additions, but their best is long gone, now only moneygrubbing and poor manners remain.
Wouldn't mind Sylvain Ebanks Blake if he's fit though.

Yup , I would rather have Ebanks Blake than Beckford, he's free, younger, and (without looking it up) has a better goal scoring ratio than Beckford

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
For the record, none of those Wolves players exactly thrill me; I'm just thinking they're all about the right second-tier experience and age that Dougie might be looking for (Henry's 30, O'Hara 26, Ward 28 and Johnson 30)
Ebanks-Blake (27) has a broken leg and will be out till October, missing The Freedman Pre-Season. Before the break, he scored 14 league goals in 2681 minutes last term - one every 191.5 minutes

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
Henry is Kevin Muscat without the talent.
Sees himself as some kind of hard case.
Johnson was talked up at Brum as being better than Cahill. Not fit to lace his boots.
O'Hara is an enigma. He obviously has talent but doesn't seem to think he has to work hard to apply it. I'm not sure he ever wanted to leave London and the bright lights. Palace or Rednapp should suit him better.
