You just can't possibly know that. It's like those tables of 'where teams would be if they didn't have their top scorers'. The answer is, nobody knows.borgetti_wanderers wrote:Aye up i knew someone would say something about that.
But in all seriousness even if we just added 1 tap in to the scoreline of 5/10 of our games we'd of been in the play offs at least.

Seriously though. You don't need a 30 goal a season striker. 2 or 3 strikers capable of 15 each a season, with a midfield that chips some in and a few from defence will see you right unless your defence needs shooting. The days of strikers that bang in 30 every season and do nowt else are behind us. More is expected from a striker now as the shape of the team is all important. It is no coincidence that the best Bolton team for a long long time based it's success on team shape and togetherness rather than loads of goals.

Agree with this. Two hardworking strikers who get 10-20 each would make a massive difference. And goals throughout the side. Hull and Cardiff pretty much didn't have a regular goalscorer amongst them yet won the division.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Happy to be of serviceborgetti_wanderers wrote:Aye up i knew someone would say something about that.

Clearly a 30 goal a season man is nice to have. But if that man (and I'm speaking generically here) is merely a goalscorer and contributes little else, then you'll struggle in many games where as AT says the shape of your team suffers.
The other thing is, IF you go up, said striker would be even harder to carry in your side in a league where possession and shape are paramount given you aren't going to create bundles of chances.

I was merely posing a point in disagreement to the bloke who was saying that 'rhodes is only a goalscorer' but with 20/30 however many goals he had you cant complain.
Personally, I don't want us to sign Rhodes. I want a little zippy striker who will make those runs that create pockets of space for Eagles/N'Gog to slip into. C Davies is a big lad, N'Gog is a big lad and both hold up the ball etc. I think we need a striker who'll be on the last shoulder of the defender all the time and moving across the back line. The only examples i can think of is Filipo Inzaghi and Paddy Madden haha! Might still have Inzaghi

I reckon Beckford (if a deal is ever sorted) could do that job.

I agree, Sordell just doens't seem interested. He clearly knows where the goal is... Just doesn't seem to be arsed to put the ball in it.BWFC_Insane wrote:Thats what Sordell is meant to do, but doesn't....borgetti_wanderers wrote:I was merely posing a point in disagreement to the bloke who was saying that 'rhodes is only a goalscorer' but with 20/30 however many goals he had you cant complain.

If Beckford performs like he has done in the past then it could be a great signing.

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
The only issue is whether the players would drop down to our level but if you look at deals which have already happened, it's an indication of the quality you can get for less money. Leo Baptistao joined Atletico for around £5m, Iago Aspas joined Liverpool for £7m and then players like Kondogbia, who has been rumoured to leave Sevilla for around £8m. These are quality prospects and even though I don't think players like that would consider us for a second, it's an indication of how much of a bargain you can get. Baptistao for £5m or Jordan Rhodes for £12m? It's just not close, at all. If the prices were the other way around their valuations would still be well off, never mind as they currently are.Prufrock wrote:I thought you were talking sense there SF, until you mentioned that we'd be better off buying a ''good' Spanish striker' for cheaper. Got any in mind or are we just rocking up to the beach with a tenner?
I don't know who would consider coming us. That's a personal thing but as far as transfer fees and wages go, a player like Alvaro Vazquez would cost less than Jordan Rhodes.
Like I said, I'm not suggesting any of these players would join us but I am saying that there's more value in going abroad. There are plenty of players better or equal to Jordan Rhodes out there, yet if we look beyond Britain, those sort of players cost a lot less. We've only signed 6 players from abroad since 2010/11, so I'd like to see our club look beyond these shores more regularly.
I actually don't like the idea of bringing through lots of non-British players, and I'd love to see more homegrown players get given a chance, but the fact is, a 'good' foreign player costs a lot less than a 'good' British player and for a club without an unlimited budget, it makes more sense to look abroad.

I think the value you get by going abroad is a good point. Medo is a classic example. He cost what £800K and were he based here would have been 3 times maybe 4 times that I can imagine.SmokinFrazier wrote:The only issue is whether the players would drop down to our level but if you look at deals which have already happened, it's an indication of the quality you can get for less money. The thing is that it's easy to say "go abroad" but finding the untapped markets now where decent players lurk for relatively low fees is getting harder.
I know for example that we have setup a scouting network in South America. The problem is though getting players from there who would pass the work permit requirements. Probably loads of gifted players there though who go a bit unnoticed.
In general re-establishing our previously strong global scouting network surely has to be the way forward.
Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
Your point SF is one I've made in the past. If you look at the players that Wigan have found in recent years for example, it makes you question what they are doing that we are not.
Having said that, for every Alonso, there's an Yves Peter Andre. For that matter, for every Alonso, there's an Alonso.

Why only two or three strikers each capable of 15 to 20 goals apiece when they are in over supply? We're beating them away from the place with shitty sticks. Some folk on here want testing for drugs!

Never heard of any of them personally, I'm interested to hear how and how often you've seen them play and what makes you think they'd be a better regualr goalscoring option than somebody who's averaged about 30 goals a season in this country for the last few years.SmokinFrazier wrote: The only issue is whether the players would drop down to our level but if you look at deals which have already happened, it's an indication of the quality you can get for less money. Just done a little research on Iago Aspas.. 25 years old. Was promoted to the first team in 2009.
In 2009/10, Celta were in the second division. Not televised in the UK.

In 2012/13, Celta were in the top flight. From what I can see, they were only on sky once.. Against Real Madrid. They lost 2-1 at home. He scored in that game.
