Attitudes towards female fans

Post by thestudent » Wed Feb 19, 2014 11:49 am

I am a University student currently in the process of writing my dissertation and I am looking at the attitudes towards female football fans. There is limited research on female football fans therefore I want to find out more about the attitudes that both males and females have towards them. The following link is an example of how people may perceive female football fans and I want to gather data to find out if this is representative of the majority of the thoughts of both male and female fans: http://metro.co.uk/2013/12/17/do-you-kn ... t-4233869/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have posted a question below that will ideally facilitate a discussion between fans. From this, I can evaluate themes and issues for my discussion in my dissertation. Moreover, I have attached a link to a questionnaire below and I would be grateful if you could complete this in addition to participating in a discussion on this thread.

For ethical reasons, I will ensure that anyone that chooses to participate in this discussion will remain anonymous through the use of false names in my write up. Therefore, by posting on this thread you are giving me your consent for your comments to be used in my dissertation. The comments are solely for academic studies and will be used in this dissertation only. This also applies to the questionnaire; your identity remains anonymous. If however you would like to participate further in this project, there is an opportunity to leave your email address at the bottom of the questionnaire.

This may be a sensitive topic for some people so do not participate if you feel there may be some discomfort. However for those of you that do comment, be honest with your answers as every response will contribute to the results of my study and the more truthful insight I receive, the better.

Thank you in advance.

The question for this discussion is:
Are female fans different to male fans? This can be regarding their knowledge, commitment, behaviour etc.?

The questionnaire can be completed here: https://www.survey.bris.ac.uk/durham/femalefans/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Apart from the obvious physical difference :D not really, however I do think that the tribal aspects of football do not apeal to the female gender.
There are a lot of devoted knowledgeable woman who follow football but to be totally honest I think there would have to be some serious changes to the game to attract more which would be detrimental to why male fans love it.

:lol: It reminded me of a normal day at the Reebok.

Some really complex questions with closed answers in there, I think will get the wrong "results"

A lot of the questions have nothing whatsoever to do with attitudes towards female fans. For what it's worth, it's 2014; if woman want to watch/play football, or any other sport for that matter, they will. Most of them won't give a damn whether men have attitudes towards them or not. There's an event taking place right now that is as good a guide as any to prove this. It's called the Olympic Games.

I did note the wink and I get that you were slightly tongue in cheek but I do think its a touchy subject for those females involved in football, be it as a fan, player or coach - or in my case all 3.

Sexism is still a fairly regular occurrence if you are involved as a female in any way IMHO. You lot aren't too bad (CAPS excluded ;) ) to be fair, but I went back and posted on my gooner forum for the first time in a little while the other day when we were getting thrashed by Liverpool and some new guy who presumably didn't know me when I used to post more regularly immediately offered to "come round and comfort me ;)" I don't mind at all jokes like that from people I know but that's the sort of response you can get as a female from a complete stranger when posting on a football forum (a big football forum that's owned and run by a female incidentally)

As a coach men can assume you don't know the game as well as them and as a player all men assume you are a butch lesbian. (I'm not very butch or a lesbian ;) )

I'd say you're more the exception that proves the rule though GG. Most girls who support football do so because their fellas do or to swoon over hunky thighs.

I'm not sure I would class that sort of girl as a fan GtE. Of the 4 Arsenal supporting women I know, one, as mentioned above runs an Arsenal forum, another is a season ticket holder, one travels from Wales home and away as often as she can to see us play and one spent a happy afternoon with me back in the 1990's abusing Teddy Sheringham whilst watching Arsenal beat Manchester United in The Charity Shield. They are what I would class as fans. And there's probably more around then you think, numbers are going up I reckon.
