Don't need to ask! :-)

I do think we occasionally underestimate what it will take to get out of this division. Since coming down, we've managed 7th and bottom half...

We seem collectively to be happier with the defence we now have, than the one we left last season on.

In the midfield, we did ok for a short period last season when we had CYL, Clayton and a couple of others. It was fairly pedestrian outside of that.

Up front, we have numerous strikers, but are seeking to rely on one we don't yet have, that we might get for a shortish period (better than nowt), and them staying uninjured.

Still, I shall remain optimistic based on what Plymouth said his transfer thread, Lenny's comments at the BWSA and now PT. :-)

I think a 20+ goalscorer up front and a 10-15 goalscorer in midfield and we'd really push the top 6.

But that is the same for a whole load of sides in this league. Whilst on paper it is 2 players we already can only have one or both for a portion of the season.

There isn't a lot in this division. Being well organised and structured and having key players who perform at the right time gets you a long way. Burnley went up on the back of two strikers scoring loads. Had they not done, they could easily have been nearer the bottom three than the top. It doesn't take much. But every season we've lacked a key element or two, for some or all of the season. Dawson made a huge difference and catapulted us on a run towards the top 6. Had we enjoyed the solidity he brought for a full season (or even two extra games) things might be very different.

Same with Juke. To a lesser extent same with Le Fondre.

The worry with the side we have is simply nobody in it has a track record of scoring goals regularly apart from Madine in the division below. We are light on goals all over. Light on people who score free kicks, who score from corners and set pieces. Add two goalscorers into that and the picture looks very different to me. It is why personally, I'd be all over the chance to bring Nolan back. Off the bench, ghosting into space in the box....and he can finish.

Lennon in the BN:
Money is tight but I think there’s enough in the pot to bring in one player,” he said. “There isn’t anyone specific at the moment, we’re just re-examining the list and then we’ll see where it goes from there.
And on Nolan:
It comes down to finances but I’m not sure Kevin fits the criteria of what we are looking for. I don’t know whether we could afford him. He’s certainly a good type and I’ve always liked him. He knows where the goal is as a midfielder. I know his reputation at Bolton is very good and if we could do a deal, then possibly.

I think, on balance, me neither...

yes - we could do with some pointy/shouty do-or-die leadership on the pitch... but have we room for another ageing, slow midfielder? if so - at the cost of leaving out who? would there still be room for current-saviour Pratley f'rinstance...

Signing Nolan would be for goals. I think he is what we need. A calm head in front of goal and goals from midfield.

Yeah, what would be the point of signing a goalscoring midfielder? We've got Danns who shoots now and then. Sometimes he even hits the target.

So you don't think we could do with a player of Nolan's experience & goal scoring ability from midfield, we have a side who can't score for toffee and lack leaders on the pitch. Kevin Nolan is exactly the type of player that we need, however we can't afford him and won't get him but there is no doubt that he would improve us dramatically, let me think for a moment Danns or Nolan....hmmm

I don't think Danns OR Nolan is the choice... it's Danns AND Nolan or Danns AND another player (since Lenny says he thinks we have the cash for ONE more.)

given the limited cash - I'm backing Lenny to come up with someone that he DOES think fits the criteria for what he's after.

Like Lenny, I'm not sure that's the Nolan of today. I'm not 100% sure he's NOT - which is why I said "on balance" - it's not (for me) a totally black/white situation..

I suspect you're right re. the cash, though - this will only ever be a hypothetical discussion!

we could do with lots's of things - but it seems Lenny can only choose one thing - and i think he was after a striker, wasn't he?

Yeah. What could Kevin Nolan do that Liam Trotter can't?!

Nowhere I don't think. Though I understand why you'd be confused what with Plymouth walking around with his head still on his shoulders and all.

I don't think you can play Nolan in a 4-4-2

I don't think you should play Nolan instead of Clough

I don't think you should pay Nolan instead of a striker

Do you think it was a falling out? Or that he's getting another job. I remember when he signed for us it was a surprise because he left Celtic to manage a team
