Update from Bolton Wanderers regarding the club's current HMRC situation

Bolton Wanderers can confirm that the club has now received a winding up petition from HMRC in respect of unpaid PAYE and VAT for the month of November.

Despite requests from the club to HMRC to give it further time to either conclude a sale or raise additional funds, HMRC has proceeded with due process and duly served a petition.

Trevor Birch, advisor to the board and owner at Bolton Wanderers, said: “Quite clearly the club remains in a critical financial position. We will continue to try and finalise a sale or alternatively raise some short term funds needed to give the club a breathing space and time in which to consider its options.”

So so sad this state of affairs.

Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:Oh, I daresay it won't help much. And she wouldn't be the first MP to hop on a bandwagon. But at the moment we need all the help possible...
She's not having that bandwagon all to herself, Bolton West Tory MP Chris Green is now on it too.
Bolton West MP Chris Green has written to the Sports Minister and Football Association, asking them to urgently intervene after news that staff at the Macron stadium, based in the Bolton West constituency, may not be paid this month.

In letters to Sports Minister Tracey Crouch and FA Chairman Greg Dyke, the MP said:

“I am writing to you with regards to the current situation at Bolton Wanderers Football Club, based in my constituency.

“As you will be aware, the club is currently experiencing financial difficulties and is looking for a new buyer. Now, more than 300 members of staff have been told that there is a chance that they will not be paid this month.

“Staff at the club are continuing to work extremely hard to ensure that the club is running as normal for the fans and also to ensure that it remains an attractive and viable proposition for potential buyers.

"I am, however, extremely concerned that these hardworking staff, many of which are my constituents, will be left without a pay check this Christmas.

“Given the serious nature of the situation, I would be grateful if you could look, as a matter of urgency, at whether there is anything the Government and the FA can do to ensure that the situation at the club does not worsen and that staff will be paid this Christmas.”

I imagine the answer will be feck All.

Seems a bit quick 10 days into December for HMRC to issue this, but they and everyone else in the world knows we have zero cash, and they've been somewhat stiffed by lots of clubs previously, so I suppose it's fair enough.

Quick?
This was just the hand delivery: Notification of the petition. The petition hasn't even happened yet.
Notification, petition, court, order, court, dissolution - all that can take place in under three weeks.

I've got to be careful what I say due to who I work for, not 100% about the PAYE but with the VAT, depending on their VAT stagger then being petitioned the month after payment is due doesn't ring true. For a start, BWFC would go into the default surcharge system where an increasing % is added onto each VAT return until debt is cleared and usually only when the maximum 15% is reached is when the debt is usually taken more seriously (obviously taking into account how much the debt is). Debt management would potentially send out a "field force agent " to assess the debt and assets but this is only after a "Time to pay" agreement couldn't be reached or if one was in place and then we defaulted on it. Something just doesn't seem right to me, with how quick this has all happened. I think there's more that we've not been told.
