How about Matt Clarke? If he signed for us permanently, he still might be out number 1 now.

NB - I don't know how old he is and if he still is/would be playing. But Jussi's still our number 1 and Clarke was brought in to cover Jussi's injury.

Yeah Small for me for those reasons, though Phillips was shite, ergo everyone else must be better!

Steve McAnespie perhaps cos he cost money

Arnie Arnie Arnie....though we made some good money on him!

Definitley the Borg (can't be any worse than Davies, or knows where the net is) and Andranik (I STILL believe in that lad)

Gentlemen, I offer you a saviour who then never actually signed. If he had he WOULD have been our saviour ... I just know it ; Veloso.

... oh, & in the mind of the manager of the time, clearly a saviour would have been Ferde Bodde. In the minds of the fans at the time, Jimmy Bullard was all we needed. Add Sean Davis to that & they'd make Jonathon Woodgate seem like a regular.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Hasn't he got a record where we didn't concede a single goal while he was on the pitch? Admittedly, he spent more time in hospital than he did on the pitch but still.

I know this came from your idea and all, but I wouldn't say suggesting one decent young player might have been a better option than another decent young player is classing him as a saviour! AAH and Klasnic good shouts.

After consideration, my XI is.....

-------------------------------Al Habsi--------------------------------
--James Sinclair---Sam Ricketts-------Abdoulaye Faye--------Nicky Hunt-
--Riga------------Andranik-------------David Thompson-----Ricardo Vaz Te-
-----------------Ivan Klasnic----------Jared Borgetti----------------------

Unlike the rest, Klasnic and Al Habsi haven't proven to be woefully inept at this level, but make it in purely because even they can't match the 'save everything', 'score everything' hype they get.

Not happy with your centre halves Tom! Two good centre halves their....the Ricketts point I guess is that he MUST be better than Steinsson, or Cahill I suppose. As for Faye, good centre half again.

I'd be looking at Laville maybe, or Simon Coleman when they both came back from injury were supposed to be saviours, but they were both as a result of injuries I guess.

I'd nominate Lubomir Michalik for centre half, absolutely cack but scored on his first start at Chelsea? Probably the last time we scored against them!

Has to be Bryan Small at left back.

Harsh to describe any of Nicky Hunt, Faye, or Borgetti as 'woefully inept'. I see the Ricketts one, because, despite being solid there, some have claimed him better than Cahill and Knight.

Faye was good. And Nicky Hunt was a half decent right back who played regularly.

I thought the whole ethos of this list was the mythical powers that squad members acquired by their (long term?) omittance from the first 11?

Three seasons (?) ago the bloke in front of me in the ESL was advocating 'building the team' around Danny Guthrie...

Guthrie is not a bad player by any means... but we'd have to be in 'League 1' before we built a team round him...

[Oh - btw - none of Tom's back four were ever considered 'saviours' by anyone I know, and three of them were or are still very decent players for the club...].
