Cahill was good, very good. Easily the best defender, and two of the defenders on show cost in excess of £15m, in Johnsons case he's cost big money twice? Three times? Anyway Cahill>Lescott, so £25m please! Unless he has that release clause thingy......did we ever get to the bottom of that?

You could see him playing for anyone in our league really like that, not sure where he may end up.....Tottenham or Arsenal?

I'm thinking of nominating this for the "biggest load of utter bollocks ever" article.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footba ... Terry.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Cahill needs to act like John Terry. Fooking hell.

But this bit takes the biscuit.
I have only a couple of observations about his performance against Ghana. He could have done more to prevent the goal but backed away when the ball was played to Asamoah Gyan and Joleon Lescott was left one on one with the Ghanaian.
Even when the Sunderland striker cut back inside, there was still time for Cahill to come across and get a block in but he elected to stay out of it.
He took a gamble with some of his decisions but top internationals don't take risks.
The key for an international-class central defender is to cut out the mistakes.
To carry the 'outstanding' tag, you can't be beaten by anyone.
Right, so you "can't be beaten by anyone". Hmm. Its true I can't actually remember another team scoring against England when John Terry was playing. I'm fairly sure he can say "I've never been beaten by anyone".

That would be the Joleon Lescott that stepped in front of him when he had it covered, right?

Is that Martin Samuel?

Anyone even putting a tiny bit of blame onto Cahill for their goal is a complete c*nt.

Lescott was (and always has been) dogshit when he came on, and was solely responsible for their goal.

Cahill imho looked world class compared to Jagielka and Lescott, didn't put a foot wrong and made his "partners" look pretty silly most of the time.

Good for him, and his stock will be rising imho.

Am I right in saying that Gyan is left footed? If anyone can pull up some highlights of the goal, what you'll see is Cahill standing off his left side gving him no room to fire the shot, then the lump Lescott steps forward on Gyan's right side, thus giving him space to hit it with his left. It would probably have been a penalty if Cahill had stayed put when Lescott made his move.

Cahill proved he has the quality required to play at the highest level and will only get better with games and a regular partner. Ghana are very good opposition and Cahill aquited himself well.
That assessment has more to do with Keown being sore that he will be out of Arsenals price range than any deficiencys in Cahills abilty.
As long as the wind blows, fortunes can change.

Keown sums it all up with his 'he needs to start grabbing people's attention with big tackles' shit. The one thing defenders do NOT need to do is go trying to grab attention. He was very quietly very solid, and looked at home. Very impressive first start.

Keown is the school of Dave McKay and Chopper Harris rather then the the school of Franz Beckenbaur. Nowt fresh there then.

I actually thought he nailed Cahill's weaknesses down bob on. We all know he has a mistake a game in him and yeah, by all means more dominant in the box.

Dominance in the box = penalties, when referring to Bolton Wanderers Ginge.

Not sure I'd agree. Rio Ferdinand was never "dominant" but he was a reader of the game with a bit of pace, who suited playing alongside a "dominant" defender like Vidic, Terry etc.

Cahill is the same IMO. At times he doesn't win the ball early enough, that much is true and also at times he relies on last ditch style defending rather than dealing with problems higher up the pitch, but in terms of dominance I think for the type of centre half he is he'll be fine as long as his partner is the right sort!

As for mistakes, he sometimes isn't positionally as good as he could be. But he's not a "clanger waiting to happen". And the "mistakes" he does make are the sort you could analyse any defender in the world and accuse him of.

I still think as an out and out "blood and guts" defender Cahill ain't that great. I've always believed that. But in terms of his all round game and ability on the ball, he's perfect for an international game where usually, pace, reading of the game and distribution from the back are the key elements required!
