For me Mark Davies doesnt score enough to play behind a striker either. He is 23 I think so really time he stepped up to the plate.

Having said that I thibk Coyle is wrong playing pratley further in front. Mark Davies is better than pratley there and we should play to his strengths not Pratleys.

I think you're probably correct in that Mavis is better further forward (and better than Pratley further forward). But if we put Mavies further forward, who plays in the more defensive role? Pratley certainly can't.

Neither can do the defensive work, but Davies can at least look threatening going forward. So by playing Pratley deeper, we're still not sacrificing anything defensively, but we WILL be better going forward.

A no brainer for me.

IIRC, Pratley played both the advanced and withdrawn roles in Swansea's 4-2-3-1 over the course of last season. That was, of course, at a lower level, but considering neither he nor Mavies has the full skill-set to play the holding role, it may be worth alternating. Perhaps that's even the plan - to alternate between them. Although one may nominally start in the more disciplined role and the other more adventurous, they seem to be able to swap as long as they cover each other.

That seems to have been the way earlier in the season, with NRC also taking his turn to bomb forward. In among the more important stuff after Fab's collapse, there was an interesting quote from Reo-Coker:

I remember before it happened, I asked him: ‘Do you want to swap positions? Do you want me to be the further midfielder pushing on and you can do the deep role?’ He just laughed and smiled and said, ‘No’.

My recollection from last year was that Moo seemed to play more box-to-box whilst Stuey held. Though, again, the roles did seem interchangeable.

Prexactly, amigo. In theory, all the middle three should be able to interchange. Doesn't half confuse the oppo, either - obviously a Mavies dribble is very different to a Prats far-post run... (anyone else reminded by his near-miss at SJP of Gazza's agonising wrong-leg slide against Germany in '96? No? Just me? Oh well)

Back to the name of the the thread, we've seen bugger all of yon Marvin, but the two Watford-watchers I've spoken to rate him as the best talent they've had since Ashley Young. So who knows?

The midfield two have generally alternated in getting forward,Mooo and NRC certainly did.It would be easy enough for Prat to bomb forward when we've worked it out wide but hold if Mavis is working through the middle.Their limitations are also limiting NRC who really does have to hold now.
