Talkshite said he was an Italian passport holder when we were linked in October or whenever it was.

Boro can afford to wait till end of January.

Lots could happen. Another club could come in for Wheater and be prepared to pay 4M.

Knight could tear his hamstring on Saturday meaning we'd be needing a centre half more urgently and would possibly pay the asking price then.

there's one out of the race.....
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has admitted defeat in his pursuit of David Wheater after accepting the Middlesbrough defender will sign for Bolton.
The Boro centre-half is currently in talks with the Trotters, and McCarthy feels he is destined for The Reebok.
McCarthy was keen on the 23-year-old, who also attracted interested from the likes of Aston Villa, Everton and Stoke, if reports are to be believed.
But McCarthy thinks his move to Bolton is all but done.
"I think you'll probably find he'll end up at Bolton and that will be great business for them," he said.
Wheater is yet to finalise his move and Boro have confirmed that although not playing him at Burton Albion in the FA Cup last week, he could be involved for their crucial Championship clash at Britsol City this weekend.

Coyle on SSN just now, in summary :
1) Decision on Vela won't be made until later in the month (after 2nd leg of Arsenals carling cup replay AND fa cup replay at Leeds).
2) Cagey about the wheater deal although full of praise and neither denied/confirmed, sounds like were playing hard-ball.
3) No formal offers for Gary Cahill

so..nothing new then :conf:

That, to me, makes it sound like we've had enquiries

Did he express his admiration for Tony Pulis and everything he's done for Stoke City football club, who are terrific by the way ??

Honestly, I couldn't care less.

He's been below average for all but about 45 minutes of the entire season. If he's the kind to throw the towel in instead of working hard, then get shot.

It's a shame though, I really thought he'd be the transfer of the season.

I've not given up on Petrov, but if it were true, I wouldn't be hitting the gin to console myself. His arrival has improved Taylor's form, we also have a lefty in Rodrigo, Alonso might be worth a look there while he settles in, Danny Ward's available and there's talk of Carlos Vela. Add in Petrov's presumably large wage and I wouldn't be tearful or fearful of the bloke leaving.

Bolton boss Owen Coyle wants to snap up Middlesbrough’s David Wheater and Benfica starlet Rodrigo Moreno – but he has vowed not to waste the club’s cash.

Coyle has got the nod from millionaire owner Eddie Davies to spend, despite Wanderers’ debt. However, the canny Scot will not pay over the odds for either of his targets.

Bolton have been quoted a price of £3million plus extras for Boro centre-half Wheater, while Portuguese giants Benfica are looking for £6million to make forward Rodrigo’s loan permanent.

However, Coyle has told his money-men that he is not interested in digging too deep into his kitty and is prepared to wait, despite having the smallest squad currently in the Premier League.

Bolton have put in lower offers for the pair and Coyle said: “I want the best players available for the best deals.

“We are in the market and are chatting to one or two clubs. It’s never close or a million miles away – it is just down to one call.”

Coyle is also willing to wait to land Swansea midfielder Darren Pratley, either cheaply before the end of the month or on a free in the summer.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will let him know if he has won the race to land Mexican striker Carlos Vela on loan after their FA Cup replay at Leeds next week.

Coyle said: “We inquired about Carlos. We’ll see what happens after the replay.”

A Nixon article with Coyle quotes that have not appeared elsewhere. Hmmmm.

But I think this explains what is going on.

Could well be us not Boro who are buggering around over the Wheater fee!
