Re: Bijou Bob's Bargain Basement Buys - Jan transfer thread
Cardiff have been giving away several players this month - cancelling contracts, giving free transfers etc. During January they've released five players whom they'd bought over the last 18 months or so a total of £8m. Odd.throwawayboltonian wrote:Nothing beyond rumours, but I have heard that we might get first refusal on Alfie and Bannan. I Imagine Alfie will command a hefty fee, at this level at least, since Cardiff is the first club he's been at where he's not been prolific.thebish wrote:do we know if any of those loans have one of those "with a view to first refusal on a permanent deal" jobbies sewn in?
It remains to be seen whether they'd be that amenable if ALF bags 10 in the remaining 17 games (assuming he's ever-present except when we go to their ground).

I thought Kellett was an attacking player? He played left midfield for Argyle didn't he, or am I confusing him with Threlkeld?Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:He's effectively signed for Man Utd U21s on season-long loan. They've loaned out a lot of their players so their gaffer - one Warren Joyce - needed a body in. As noted it will do Kellett's development the world of good but let's not gild the lily: United bought two left-backs in the summer for a combined £46m, so I doubt they'll turn to someone who couldn't displace Tim Ream playing out of position.LeverEnd wrote:Kellett has genuinely signed for Man Utd on season long loan. From what I understand he can play left-back or left-wingback; left-wing at a push. (Argyle play three at the back, under our old mate John Sheridan.)
Re: Bijou Bob's Bargain Basement Buys - Jan transfer thread
And one wouldn't be surprised to learn of dutchman and former Barca boy van Gaal insisting that the club play his favoured 3 at the back all the way down. Even if the fans don't like it.

The Cardiff fans I know are very confused. Some even mutter darkly about sabotage. Personally I think the club just spunked too much money trying to stay up under OGS and Slade, a very different manager, has asked them to clear the decks. Dunno, not our problem - but we could benefit...throwawayboltonian wrote:True dat, hadn't even considered that they've been chopping players left and right. FFP maybe, although surely the payouts still count against them?Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:Cardiff have been giving away several players this month - cancelling contracts, giving free transfers etc. During January they've released five players whom they'd bought over the last 18 months or so a total of £8m. Sounded lively enough with Clough.

He'd have to make up his own mind first - they played a back four again at the weekend...Prufrock wrote:And one wouldn't be surprised to learn of dutchman and former Barca boy van Gaal insisting that the club play his favoured 3 at the back all the way down. Even if the fans don't like it.

He's not happy about it though!

After all this excitement and mysteriously foreign midfielders signing, and given out injury situation, we're probably going to rock up tomorrow with Trotter against Liverpool. Just thought I'd bring folks down to earth.

I was already there. Horrible thought isn't it.Worthy4England wrote:After all this excitement and mysteriously foreign midfielders signing, and given out injury situation, we're probably going to rock up tomorrow with Trotter against Liverpool. Just thought I'd bring folks down to earth.
I lost all thread of what happened yesterday evening tbh, so the summary in the BEN is useful.
Given that we have Pratley out for 8 weeks (not TOO far from rest of the season) as well as Max Clayton and Mavies, plus the nagging injury to Cravies and we'll need these newbies even if it may take some time for them to settle in.
I'd think the younger loanees, Slavchev & Rochinha, may well be looking at a full season loan to follow. Bannon and Le Fondre could become permanent next year .... maybe.
Lennon and his team have good contacts and it seems doors open for them in a way they haven't done for us for some time. What he has added to the team is speed. This lot, gelling, will be a damn sight quicker than we are used to.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I like that use of 13 for the substitute goalkeeper.
Quite poignant in that if he has to come on then some type of misfortune has occurred.

I don't think any of the new signings are eligible for tomorrow – in which case, you're probably right.

Number 47? Never forget the thrill of getting a No 9 first team shirt at school. Juniors had no numbers and there were only ten in the senior team as the goalie jersey( mandatory green wool) had none and reserves only played if eleven players didn't show up. The shear exhilaration of seeing your name on a sheet of notebook paper pinned up on the school notice board was almost too much to bear...Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:Dey gots numbers now. Tango: Not only that, but as No.9 in a 2-3-5 formation* I was expressly forbidden from going back into my own half.... easy life...

Ha-ha, remember that instruction too. Luckily there was a real mish-mash of teams in school and weekend amateur leagues. Against real good sides you didn't get much to do. Against teams like The Lancastrian from Little Hulton, we kept warm by fighting.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:Tango: Not only that, but as No.9 in a 2-3-5 formation* I was expressly forbidden from going back into my own half.... easy life...

Indeed, you must have had an old-fashioned coach. Alf Ramsey introduced 4-2-4 for England in the 1960s, while the Italian clubs tended to go 9-1.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:Tango: Not only that, but as No.9 in a 2-3-5 formation* I was expressly forbidden from going back into my own half.... easy life...

Just re-reading everything. Comment was that we were supposed to be trying to tie up two players for the end of the season, rather than now.
One was Kuipers, who is evidently either Michael or Nick, depending on which report you're reading at the time. He was mentioned earlier in the day, from Maastricht.
The other is just "Hughes". Who is this "Hughes"? I haven't heard a Hughes mentioned in connection with us all month...
