I'm sorry, but I've heard some grasping at straws excuses in my time, but Wheater going to Boro for our benefit really does take the biscuit. If he performs well, its his old club, he'll probably end up staying there. It looks to me like its the start of the end of his career with us if he goes there.

Frankly I don't see why any of our centre halves going anywhere under any circumstances is at this moment in time a negative, assuming they are replaced.

He can only go anywhere for 93 days, then it is entirely in our power to re-assess the situation. Would hardly be a huge problem.

Considering the bleating about (in no particular order):

1) The wage bill
2) The inability to shift high-earning players
3) The paucity of our defence

It seems monumentally idiotic to have handed one of our centre halves a new contract, waited until the transfer window shuts, then loan him out.

And as for the idea that Boro will do all our dirty work and hand back a finished product, that's pure fantasy island.

I'm quite sure Dougie would prefer to loan out Mills or Ream ahead of Wheater. But if that is the only interest and we need to do it to bring someone in, I don't see what harm it can do.

Let us not forget that Wheater wasn't out of contract. His new deal was on reduced wages, which presumably gave the player a bit more security but also reduced the wage bill of the club.

It is not like he was a free agent we signed up, he was here this season on a contract no matter what.

This season yes. Why extend that? Have you ever asked yourself that question? Why extend that (which, lets be clear, will cost more money than not extending it, no matter how much wriggling you want to do) then loan him out? Are you seriously asking anyone to believe that Boro will simply put him in the first team for 3 months, iron out his flaws and send him back with a thankyou note? Are you being serious?

And, on top of that, we play players who he desperately wants to shift and doesn't deem better than Wheater, or good enough for the first team?

Sadly if he does have to shift a player out to bring one in, he may well not have any real choice about who goes out as it will be whoever gets interest.

Wheater won't go anywhere without a centre half coming in.

Is that a promise? What happens if they're worse? How does that make any financial sense?

If they're worse then Pulis is coming and bringing his ginger mate with him.....

As for financial sense, IF we can't bring someone in without freeing up wages then surely that makes very very clear sense?

I thought we had to subsidise all clubs that the players we sent out on loan? So how does that make sense? Unless of course we're shifting the goalposts yet again to fit the argument.

Depends if we are shifting the goalposts for feng shui purposes.

I have no idea what Wheater is getting paid, how much of it Boro will pay, and how much we will need in order to bring whoever the target is in.

And neither do you. I'll leave that up to the club.

Brilliant. That's the best answer yet. I hope the bish has that bookmarked.

Big deal. Happy for him to stay there. If he does they pay us a fee perhaps. If he comes back better, great. If he comes back still shit then we've got some work to do. In the meantime though we get to bring in another defender because someone's been loaned and that is sorely needed.

Brilliant ... signs and a month later not even in the 25 man squad.

He doesn't sound at all happy. Not even a PSG or a map showing where Nando's is. Until he says that "I have a proper contract ..." you'd wonder whether someone didn't know who he was or why he was there ; -
"I have never been presented to the press, I have never had an official photo and I am still waiting for my club suit," he said. "I stayed for 15 days in a hotel before finding somewhere to live and the club told me I had to pick up the bill.

"It is true, I have a proper contract, I earn a little more than Bordeaux but living in London is 10 times more expensive. And I came to play. Either I rip up my contract or I wait until the winter transfer window to find a club."
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
"I understand you are a very good footballer" ... "I try".

What was that chap called that never played for Chelsea but continued to pick up his sumptuous emolument by simply turning up for training and fulfilling his contractual obligations? (Sorry to digress but it's bugging me).

He actually lived back in Holland and commuted by air didn't he? Or am I getting mixed up?
