PS - often lots of engineering works on weekends that might not be clear when booking tickets. This could mean getting on a coach and spending more time travelling but paying train prices! Check the dates for the route on the National Rail website to be sure.

Re: Pre Season Friendlies
PPS - trains in the UK are massively shit and expensive. If there is a cheap 1st class advance ticket, get it, it's worth a bit extra...particularly when the train is busy.
Re: Pre Season Friendlies
I never get why people recommend thetrainline. It's bobbins. I book tickets direct through Virgin, I've never seen them cheaper on the thetrainline and sometimes more expensive. There are also no card charges (there used to be on thetrainline, not sure anymore).
On AT's point re: travel disruption, might be worth checking National Express/ Megabus to see if you can get a coach. Would be from Victoria so quicker to get to than Euston, usually much cheaper, but obvs the coach would take a fair bit longer. Might be worth it if cash is a problem/ there looks to be disruption to the railways that weekend.

Back in the day thetrainline.com was 'the' site to use. You'd have been about 10 back then

London to Crewe should be straightforward enough on the train and any planned work on that line will be known by now.

Try https://www.virgintrains.co.uk/ for trains from London Euston direct to Crewe. You can get a train from Fulham (Putney/Putney Bridge) to Euston for a few quid. Prices don't look too bad at the moment.palekm08 wrote:Okay so long story short, im australian and live in australia, and my sister works as a paramedic in London. Im flying up thursday, and want to catch a bolton game for the first time in my life, during one of the days my sister works.
So basically i plan to go watch the Crewe game on the 22nd, and so im asking for your help. In the most simplistic way possible could you supply advice on how i could get to the game from London (Staying in Fulham). How much roughly does transport cost? Duration from Fulham.
Cheers
Alternatively, try http://www.redspottedhanky.com/ or https://www.thetrainline.com/ You can book the entire journey through those two sites.
Normally, the latter 2 are very competitive with Virgin, but look much more expensive currently. I found the same issue when looking at prices a few weeks ago though. You should be able to get the whole trip for around £50 looking at the prices on Virgin and then adding on the cost of travel across London.

What about that red spotted hanky site for booking train tickets? Never done it but heard of it. Others might know more.
I'll be at that game if you fancy a chippy tea and a pint?

It's very name should tell you all you need to know. If you think Virgin's quirky messages in the bogs are annoying, what sort of feck* might one expect from redspottedhankys?LeverEnd wrote:What about that red spotted hanky site for booking train tickets? Re: Pre Season Friendlies
As suggested by moi above your post. I've used that for a few years and had some cracking deals, but it doesn't seem to be as cheap as Virgin these days. I wonder if Virgin have upped the price to them? The real benefit of using RSH is the ability to use Tesco vouchers at double the value which has saved me a lot over the years.LeverEnd wrote:What about that red spotted hanky site for booking train tickets? 50 quid is cheap! Used to cost me over 5k a year to get the train to work (when it occasionally worked). Half the reason for moving to Dubai was to get away from the commute.palekm08 wrote:50 pounds!!!!!! jesus christ. Think you'll be pleasantly surprised by public transport in the UK, compared with Australia.palekm08 wrote:50 pounds!!!!!! jesus christ. It can cost you about 20$ a train ride in australia to take you basically anywhere you need to go.
Not sure $90/£50 would get you from Sydney to Canberra, which is about the same distance as London to Manchester.
Plus you'll get there in 2 hours, rather than the 4 hours it takes from Syd to Can ... since the train barely reaches 100km/hr.
That's all unless things have changed in Aus in the last 5 years, which, when it comes to public transport I'd doubt.
Another option - rent a car, and enjoy the British countryside.

Daniel arap Moi, former president of Kenya whose 24-year leadership left his country on the brink of disaster, leading to my favourite-ever niche headline (in the Telegraph, I think): "After Moi, the deluge".LeverEnd wrote:Who's moi?
