No, he said we was looking at a low risk player in SA which wouldn't cost very much.
Ah right, that seems to have disappeared

He has, I'll give him that, but he does normally go for the "throw enough $hit and some will stick" attitude. Wasn't he the one who started off the belief that we were (and still are!) due a Chelsea loanee as part of the Cahill deal?
Not sure if he started it but it hasn't been proved otherwise yet.

Rumours circulating on twitter than Joey O Brien is on his way back to us. Can't see that myself. Played most of last season didn't he?

Joey O'Brien... name rings a bell, where do I know him from?

[Edit: of course, from Bolton Wanderers. duh.]

Always rated him when he was with us, just a shame about the injuries, so I wouldn't exactly kick myself if we do. Could signing him be a fallback if Baptiste opts for Palace? That said, given that he signed a new contract with WHU in January until 2016(?) I'd be surprised if we actually do move for him. I reckon it's more rumour-mongering than truth.

And by the sound of things WHU have there knickers in a twist over the Hall deal, so i can't see that one happening

Look he scored a lot last season yes. But so did Glenn Murray, 1 more in fact.

Clearly I'd like Rhodes because at this level he can score goals. Is he worth 8M or whatever Blackburn paid? That for me still remains to be seen. Remember for example Nugent being a 6M player and loads begging Sammy Lee to sign him. Appy Arry obliged instead. And well enough said.

My reservation with Rhodes is still that whenever I watch him he adds very little if he doesn't score. If you're spending that sort of money on any player you'd want them to be more than just a championship goalscorer. IMO at least.

If he hit a dry patch I'd worry. And there is no evidence as to whether he'd translate into the premiership yet. And for that sort of money, he'd most definitely have to, again IMO.
  Yes, let's have more players that run around a lot but that couldn't find their arse with either hand. Rhodes adds very little if he doesn't score? So did Gary Lineker.

Let's have more busy fools, eh? N'gog, Elmander and so on. And let's spunk top Dollar on them to, eh?
That's not what I said though. I mean not everything is as black and white as you're trying to make out. There isn't always a clear distinction between "goalscorers" and "busy fools" to use your own words.

The question mark for me over Rhodes is not the fact he scores goals, because as said he's got a great record thus far. It's about the value. Blackburn paid £8M for him. They've suggested they want a profit on that, but lets assume his cost remains around the £8M mark. That would place him as around about our second or third most expensive player ever (were we to be able to afford him which clearly we can't at this point). Now that's all well and good IF he can carry on his scoring form and IF he can then translate that into the premiership - and before you say "If he takes us up I don't care" for 8M quid he'd have to be able to perform at the top level for us.

However, Beckford had a remarkably similar goalscoring record at Leeds to what Rhodes had at Huddersfield. Both banging them in for fun. Beckford went to Everton on a free and as DSB pointed out got 8 in a season. Not bad going for a free transfer all in. However, if we'd paid out a near record fee then 8 goals in the premiership probably wouldn't cut it, unless the player had a lot more to his game. Certainly not in my book.

So I'm saying that with Rhodes there is no guarantee he'll keep scoring ad infinitum, plenty similar have dried up. There is also the big question as to whether he can translate into the top flight. I personally worry about lower league strikers like Rhodes who seem to be able to bag for fun but when I watch them offer little if they are not scoring, when stepping up to the top level. Primarily because I don't see too many of those in the premiership anymore. It seems teams can't carry them. Especially if they are less prolific there.

I'm probably not explaining very well, but that's my view.

Were he available for 2-3M then an entirely different story of course.......

If he cost us £8m or so, and he got us the goals "at this level" to get us promoted. It's money well spent, regardless of what he'd do at the top.

To me though, he looks like one of those players where regardless of the level he was playing, he'd score. It looks like it comes so naturally to him. The sort who'd fall over 8 yards out, with the ball hitting his left bollock then rolling over the line after hitting both posts.. He's EXACTLY what we need.

And to be honest, whenever I've seen him, his link up play has looked decent. Drops into pockets and pulls defenders out and knocks clever little passes round the corners. Not particularly quick, but very, very clever.

Not for me. If you're spending that sort of money it's no use them getting you up then being exposed in the top flight. Cos you're gonna make a big loss on the player that way. Then have to find the money to buy someone else more effective.

You're right about Rhodes looking natural. He may well bang them in for a premiership side too. Not saying he won't. Just that there are others who have looked like that but never really managed to translate it into the top flight.

^ Mate, you said exactly the same this time last year about him not being up to playing in the Championship, and he's proved you wrong there, quite handsomely in fact.

Here you go - Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio is looking to sell 29-year-old forward Stephane Sessegnon for £8m. (Mirror)

I know who I'd rather spend the money on.

Don't get this

C Davies
N'gog
Sordell
Eaves
Beckford

With potentially Eagles as a number 10.

Who's heard any interest at all in N'gog or Sordell which wasn't N'gog angling for any potential interest in a French paper?

Surely the squad's full up front once Beckford arrives.

I like the look of that. We're in the driving seat if we get the business done early.

Why not, HG? Austin was born in Berkshire and played for four clubs there, one in Dorset and one in Wiltshire before moving to Lancashire at the age of 21. He's still only 23 so it's hard to imagine he's put down roots...
Sorry, I didn't explain myself very well there.

I think Austin will have options in the Premiership. The only way I could see him coming to us would be if he had put roots down in the North West and couldn't face leaving the area. Plus, I'm yet to be convinced we have the kind of money Burnley would want for him. I assume they'll want at least the £7m they got for Rodriguez

£8 million for Stephane Sessegnon?! I must be worth 500k in the current market!

Sessegnon was often Sunderland's best player last season – when he bothered turning up. When he didn't, Sunderland didn't.

Harry G: Yeah, I see your point. It would surprise me if it were Austin.

In other news, this morning's Sun has Owen Coyle offering Bursaspor £400k for Scott Carson. Just thought that might tickle the Ali fanboys' balls...

Indeed, it's a surprisingly small amount. Don't think his reputation ever recovered from That Night Against Croatia, perhaps unfairly so; the odd fluff thereafter was amplified and held up as Further Evidence.

But if it's true - and I say if, it's in a gossip column in a red-top - it's hardly a ringing endorsement for Ali Al-Habsi, who was dropped last term for the (now unsigned) loanee Joel Robles. His contract's up in 2015...

Al-Habsi is out injured for the start of the season.. This is APPARENTLY the reason behind Coyle going after Carson. It's got nothing to do with Al-Habsi being only a shot stopper and not having the ability to kick nor catch and has poor goalkeeping positioning.

Does anyone actually want him back?

Seemed like a decent deal at the time, its not seeming any worse yet, especially with the price Carson is quoted at.
