That's just brought to mind one Mr Daniel Braaten.thebish wrote:Lord Kangana wrote: But I still disagree with the idea, as I don't think that players who actually were good really count. I reckon its more a team of players who had one good game (or none) who people then knew were being kept from the team by shit management.
indeed - the "saviours" in this thread should be those who ITK fans know - for some reason - one good pre-season goal? - chumps manager? - a youtube clip? - but the fecking useless manager just can't see it and won't play him..

Ok, I'll throw in Ibrahim Ba on the basis of him scoring a 40 yard volley against Sao Paulo at the Reebok.thebish wrote:Lord Kangana wrote: But I still disagree with the idea, as I don't think that players who actually were good really count. if only the manager could see what us fans could see - then we'd be fecking awesome.... the fact that they are NOT picked only grows the legend around them...
andranik was - for a while - the archetype - and (I'd argue) - Klasnic - and the now untouchably awesome miracle-keeper - Al Habsi.
in this team there would be very very few genuinely "saviour" players - cos otherwise the manager would have played them more.

Re: Saviour XI
Who was that Zimbabwean (or Zambian, or Zanzibarian?) striker who Pompey signed instead of us?
Honestly, at the time I was gutted that we'd missed out on a genuine talent. Really.

If we're talking players who never played for us, I remember a guy near me at the Bok once arguing passionately that Allardyce was wrong to turn down Zigic having watched him (and laughed at how bad he was) and vowed never to come back again because Allardyce had "no knowledge of foreign football".

Collins Mbesuma.. Crikey, didn't he score 373 goals in one season?
Currently playing for the Lamontville Golden Arrows in South Africa after being released by Pompey, Bursaspor, Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows..
What a player!

Sounds like he's saved quite a lot of teams there.boltonboris wrote:Collins Mbesuma.. Crikey, didn't he score 373 goals in one season?

I see him more as a missionary worker who comes in, does his saving and then moves on to spread his effect somewhere else in need. Expect him at Wolves next week.boltonboris wrote:I believe not.. Hence his move

... indeed. Add Messrs Pal Olaf Snoroasson and Dung Thatch and I'm forced to ask whether we have/had shite talent spotters or we fckd them up with shite coaching once we got hold of them.boltonboris wrote:Emanuel Morini
These 3 would be mid 20's now, all valued at around £35m and the backbone of our exciting team.

Unlike the rest, Klasnic and Al Habsi haven't proven to be woefully inept at this level, but make it in purely because even they can't match the 'save everything', 'score everything' hype they get.

Al Habsi - hasn't ousted Jussi, but still week-in, week-out at Premiership level.
Sam Ricketts - more or less a regular now and covers excellently at c/half
Abdoulaye Faye - a hero with us. Poached to Newcastle by Sam & until turn of year a regular still at Premiership level
Nicky Hunt - maybe not God's gift, but 128 Prem appearances for us
Ivan Klasnic - hit & miss, with fitness issues, but are you dismayed when you see him named on our bench ?
Jared Borgetti - A high class striker who never got a chance to settle into our formation. Aged 32 when we got him.

Definitely. When I first saw him I thought he could run like a Gazelle.
Unfortunately he also played football like one. But more importantly, so the rumour goes, he could drink like Bryan Robson, Paul McGrath and Norman Whiteside combined.

Re: Saviour XI
How about Andy Walker post injury?
The best finisher I'd ever seen when he first arrived. Got injured and we waited over half of the following season for him to return as he would be the man to take us to the Prem. We even got over 3000 turn up for his first match back in the reserves. He looked a bit chunkier and Arsenal replay notwithstanding he never got back to the levels he was at before. In hindsight £650,000 from Celtic was great business
