I also agree. Not sure if a minutes applause is always the most appropriate form of respect, but I think it an excellent way to show respect to someone who brought great joy and entertainment. It celebrates a life instead of just mourning a death.Annoyed Grunt wrote:Agree with this.Lord Kangana wrote:I prefer a minutes applause based on the fact that its proactive. I've clapped and cheered Gary Speed many times, it just seems more appropriate to do it one more time given the arena he made his living in. To me.

Re: RIP Gary Speed
Coming from the dark ages of silence for respect at funerals, I always found the applause thing a bit odd until I went to Nat Lothouse's funeral. The cortege was loudly applauded all the way up Bank Street to the Parish Church, out of it and along Deansgate and back to Bank Street after the service by folks obviously deeply moved, appreciative and showing great respect for a local hero. It changed my views completely and I joined in whole heartedly. That people care is what's important and how they show it matters not, just that they do.

Sky were at Elland Road, both Gary Mac and David Barry in tears.

another correspondent from another place I talk footie with bolton fans brings my attention to this:

The tribute to Gary Speeed written by Huw Richards in "When Saturday Comes" contains the line:
"He displayed an instinct for passing football evidently unclouded by his years at Bolton and Sheffield United"

A massively twattish thing to put in a bloody tribute piece!

At least WSC acknowledged that he actually played for us, if only to take the piss (which is pretty much their role in life anyway). Unlike much of the serious media, who preferred to airbrush Bolton out of his CV altogether. On a par with the valiant attempts of the MoTD credits people to airbrush us out of the Premier League. Christ, I hope we stay up, if only to keep poking a stick in the eye of these sort of tossers.

Re: RIP Gary Speed
Gary Speed had a more relevant long term career than WSC.

Re: RIP Gary Speed
Speed, who played for Sheffield United, Everton, Newcastle, Leeds and Bolton, was found hanged at his Cheshire home on November 27 last year by his wife Louise.
Today Mrs Speed told the inquest into his death at Warrington Coroner's Court that she had had a text conversation with Speed, 42, just days before he died.
The inquest heard he had talked in terms of taking his life but that he "dismissed it", saying that he was "excited" about the future with his wife and two sons.
Mrs Speed said the text referred to their "ups and downs" but went on about "how important the boys were" and about "moving forward".
The inquest heard that the couple "had words" on the night before he was found dead after they had been to a dinner party at a friend's house.
"We walked in the house and we had an exchange of words about something and nothing," Mrs Speed said

OK, let's get down to the 'hey lads, hey' here.
The coroner at the inquest into the death of Wales manager Gary Speed has said he cannot be satisfied he intended to kill himself.
Really? How so? What else might anybody be hoping to achieve by hanging themself in their garage?

Re: RIP Gary Speed
who knows... it all seems like a strange tale... Mrs speed and he have a barney - she storms off - he sits for a while on the steps with a noose round his neck... (for some reason they know he said there for quite some time) - she comes back - can't get in cos she has left her keys - sleeps in car - gets up next morning and tries the garage - sees Gary...Bruce Rioja wrote:OK, let's get down to the 'hey lads, hey' here.

I suppose all the coroner is saying is that he can't be totally sure and there is a slight possibility that Gary wanted the missus to come home and find him sat on steps with noose around his neck as as bit of dramatics/cry for help... but that when she didn't come back - he nodded off (had he had a drink?) and accidentally hung himself..
slim possibility - but the coroner is simply saying he can't be totally sure...
