Dawson clear for Reebok landing

2:58pm Wednesday 23rd January 2013 in Sport By Marc Iles

WANDERERS have won the race to sign West Brom defender Craig Dawson on loan.

The England Under-21 international is set to join the club before this weekend's FA Cup clash with Everton but will not be able to feature as he is cup tied from a previous round.

Dawson, who previously turned out for Radcliffe Borough, was also wanted by Blackburn Rovers, Leeds United and Leicester City.

It is expected that he will sign until the end of the season.

The centre-half will provide competition for Zat Knight, Tim Ream and Sam Ricketts, along with David Wheater who has recently returned to full-time training after a knee injury.

But West Brom have warned that the move is unlikely to turn into a permanent one, with Steve Clarke insistent that he has a future at the Hawthorns.

"Craig is a top prospect, a top talent," said the Baggies boss last week. "He has been really unfortunate that Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley have been outstanding. The back-up this year has been Gabi Tamas who also been outstanding and he’s found his chances very limited.
“I would like Craig to go out and get some games but it would be a temporary measure.
“He has a big big future here and in the game.”

Wheats is coming back
Knightmare, Ream, Ricketts
Mills??

Its either - The above are shite (quite possible) and we still dream of promotion. Or even worse we need him for avoiding the drop.

Or we fancy ourselves of twisting WBA and the lads arm in the summer.

Or that bin Knight/Ricketts story had some depth.

If Alonso is on his way, then Ricketts to LB and that leaves 2 injured/returning and 2 considered shit. We need someone for sure...

I actually think we could do with 1 wide player capable of playing either side, too.

Read somewhere that he fancies Craig Davies for wide right. Not sure how true it is, but of he's capable of filling the role, then great..

Boris: There was definitely a direct DF quote that mentioned CDavies and playing wide.

Welcome aboard, Daws. It's slightly odd that we're getting a loanee for a position we're reasonably stocked in, but he certainly fits the young/hungry mode, and if he excels could be a possible summer signing with resale potential – a facet we can no longer afford to ignore.

I've only just realised/remembered that Knight and Ricketts – signed at the same time by Megson – were given two-year contracts under Coyle last summer. I doubt Freedman would have the freedom to offer such length to thirtysomethings, and knowing that we've still got 18 months' commitment puts a new twist on the pay-off theory.

"Hungry"? So he's a fat bastard?? By the time he gets Dougie fit, he'll be back at The Hawthorns

I will be delighted if Alonso goes. He's embarrassing. Despite me not really having much faith in Dougie I do have to praise him for offloading all the fairies from this club.

Alonso isn't a bad player and it's telling that a big club like Fiorentina want him. I'm not sure it's their usual transfer policy to pick up embarrassing players from the Championship.

He'll develop into a very good player, I think. He's still young and learning but there is plenty of potential there.

I think Alonso is one of our best assets. Sadly the modern world, post Bosman, means there's f*ck all we can do if he want's to move on for a better offer in the summer. Unless cashing in for a few quid now is better, which is up for debate.

Wow he polarises opinions...absolute joke to one of our best assets.

Right as #I see it - he's been injured abput 50% of his 2.5 years
he's been drunk driving and the accident saw someone killed. Been found not guilty for whatever reason by the sounds of it. I wont pretend to understand the case.
he had one good game in the 2 years in the premiership. against a centre half on the wing.
his defending's suspect and as he's spanish we've talked about him playing in midfield. he's had 3 or 4 decent outings at full back this season.

So in 2.5 years he has been 'one of our best assets' about 5% of the time. It just so happens to be in the january transfer window. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I'll take the risk on Kelett (which was the name i was after, thanks).
Having said that, Ricketts has been an absolute disaster at left back, but I trust Dougie to see it. So if he goes we want one in. Maybe Warnock back if no-one comes in for him.

How old is Alonso now? If he's under-24 and we've offered him a new deal do we not get compo? Or does that only apply if they came through the academy?

I'd have thought the £500k sort of covers that.

Ah, I may have missed the point. I thought it was 500k now BECAUSE he's out of contract in the summer.

He's in the final 6m of his contract. In a Bosman situation he can sign with a foreign based team this month with a view to moving in July.

Depending on the factors you mentioned we MAY be due some compo. Never very much, when it happens.

If the new team want the player early they have to pay a fee .... which will be q low as it's just 6m before they could get him for free (or close to free).

I thought they had to be 'home grown' to be eligible for compo?

Aye, there are rules about compo and under 24s though. It wouldn't be very much, but better than absolutely nowt. As Boris says, I suspect it may only apply to home-grown uns. If it did apply though, then 500k doesn't sound like a lot to be selling him for now. Surely we'd get towards that at a tribunal? I'm confused.
