Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window

Johnston will be 25 in a few months - is dropping down to League Two really going to be appealing to him at this stage of his career? Seems very unlikely to me.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 1:15 pmI wonder if this means there could be something in those George Johnston to Wrexham rumours that aren’t going away?
He can play on the left Forrester too and is supposedly very good in the middle of a three.

Another rumour circulating is one Joshua Maja. Never heard of himself myself but others on here surely have?

I wouldn't have really seen that Cambridge striker dropping down either...dunno. Money does strange things...The_Gun wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 1:20 pmJohnston will be 25 in a few months - is dropping down to League Two really going to be appealing to him at this stage of his career? Would be a ridiculous signing for League One.sonicthewhite wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 1:21 pmAnother rumour circulating is one Joshua Maja. Never heard of himself myself but others on here surely have?
Worth remembering he was on loan in the Premier League a couple of years ago.
Where's that rumour from?
Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
Yeah, he featured quite heavily in the 'Sunderland 'Til I Die' series and is a good player. If he comes back to England it will almost certainly be with a Championship club.sonicthewhite wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 1:21 pmAnother rumour circulating is one Joshua Maja. It’s clearly completely made up nonsense. No substance at all.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 1:26 pmWould be a ridiculous signing for League One.sonicthewhite wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 1:21 pmAnother rumour circulating is one Joshua Maja. He’s on about £20K a week.

Was in the bbc gossip column Maja is leaving Bordeaux so assume that's boredom and idle speculation.
Would be very very good but can't see him dropping below the Champo.
Also can't see Johnstone dropping down to L2. Wrexham won't be able to pay much if any more than us, to go down a league, whereas there's been serious interest in him from the Champo, better standard and more money.
I'm worried he'll leave, but doubt it's there.
Know nothing about Forrester, let's see how he goes.

I'm inclined to agree, but then if you told me 12 months ago that we'd sign Baxter I'd have laughed at you. Baxter turned down more than £20k a week to come here.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 1:53 pmIt’s clearly completely made up nonsense. No substance at all.

It would be a frankly inexplicable signing. Probably one of the best pieces of business I've ever seen done, in terms of both level and technical ID.
It's a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Let's see how it runs

Wouldn’t completely rule Johnstone out for Wrexham. Wrexham have deep pockets. They want key quality statement signings. So they can pile resources into a few players.Prufrock wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 1:54 pmWas in the bbc gossip column Maja is leaving Bordeaux so assume that's boredom and idle speculation.

Johnstone has a year left. Yet to sign. Wrexham put decent cash on the table - are we in a position to say no? Then down to the player and again they offer a big deal it could tempt him. He may want to wait it out for higher level offers but they may be waiting for him on a free….

The difference is that Baxter needs to play and probably in England to establish his career. Going to Israel wouldn’t do that. If Maja had only an offer from Israel then I’d say it’s more realistic. But he’s got offers from the league above ours and Rangers supposedly. Plus he’s in France.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 1:59 pmI'm inclined to agree, but then if you told me 12 months ago that we'd sign Baxter I'd have laughed at you. We’d have to absolutely smash our wage structure to even get close and that’s what we said we wouldn’t do.
I really think it’s just made up.

I agree there are distinct differences that made Baxter this summer vastly more likely than Maja. However, I've been at this too long to take it too seriously and I'll enjoy this "link" for a while.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 2:08 pmThe difference is that Baxter needs to play and probably in England to establish his career. I agree the most likely thing is someone has just made it up from whole cloth. However, I could also see Markham trying that on.
The only (admittedly ragged) thing that makes me think it could be true is that Maja is bang on my model for the attacker we need in. As in made in a lab. Every player we've signed thus far has been precisely the type we've needed to get done, so it's a weird one for a randomer with no training to pull out of their arse.
Again, not taking it at all seriously; but it's (here) raining on a Tuesday and I'm at a loose end. I can watch the herons try to catch my fish, or talk bollocks about made-up footy links and the herons are here all the time.

Footballers want to make as much money as they possibly can, in as short a time as they possibly can. If Wrexham double his wages, which they probably would, with all the media attention, sponsorships and endorsements on top of that, he'd be all over itThe_Gun wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 1:20 pmJohnston will be 25 in a few months - is dropping down to League Two really going to be appealing to him at this stage of his career? I agree on type. I’ve seen a fair bit of him and he’s one of those that sort of has it all but honestly I’ve never been completely convinced by.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 2:16 pmI agree there are distinct differences that made Baxter this summer vastly more likely than Maja. Obviously would be a massive signing for league one but just think this is a player being in the news someone making up a rumour and that’s it.
Feels very out of place in the summer we’ve had thus far where whilst this might be unfair the sentiment from our fans seems to be ‘slightly underwhelmed’.
Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
I mean never say never but they have L2 FFP to comply with now (don't think the conference has one) and they'll already have one of if not the top wage budget in the league.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 2:05 pmWouldn’t completely rule Johnstone out for Wrexham. I can't see how they can outbid what we can offer enough for that to make sense. Someone like John, realistically never getting a big champo offer maybe. But Johnstone has to back himself to say least be a Champo player. And if they come Wrexham certainly can't compete with that.

I can understand that to an extent.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 2:27 pmwhilst this might be unfair the sentiment from our fans seems to be ‘slightly underwhelmed’.
The thing is Evatt said he wanted "Players who can play my football" and we're seeing him make tactical signings, rather than exciting ones.
I'm not doing cartwheels around the lounge over Forrester, Nlundulu, Cogley, Coleman or Baxter (mostly over injuries for the latter), but I do think they are all good for Evatt in terms of his ability to execute the game plan.
We still need that one-on-one dribbler down the right, a second-ball-winner, a midfield final third threat and (the obviously definitely signing) Josh Maja; but we're unlikely to get all that done.
How much of that we get done will decide our season. Some of it will likely have to wait for January.

Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
I think a Baccus type and a Wilson type are essentials. You can’t leave that till January if you are serious on winning promotion. That would be just like last season. That midfield all action ball winner and a flying excellent attacking wing back. Absolutely needed now.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 2:37 pmI can understand that to an extent.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 2:27 pmwhilst this might be unfair the sentiment from our fans seems to be ‘slightly underwhelmed’.

I think beyond that it’s whether an attacking mid or a striker who adds the quality fall into place or not and it might be if they don’t we wait till January.
But yeah the first two cannot be left. The latter two maybe could be.

Meh, it depends what the other two are like.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 2:43 pmBut yeah the first two cannot be left. The latter two maybe could be.
If it's a case of going as is then the Baccus and Wilson types start to look more vital.
Likewise, if you get those two then the attacking issues are less glaring if we don't bring in the attacking mid or forward.
If we pretend the Maja thing were true and he rocked up I think we could go as-is at that stage and still be up there, though we'd likely need to do more in Jan to win the league.
We can imagine what the side would be like if we signed Maja, Wilson and Baccus...but if the tumescence doesn't go away within 6 hours everyone should contact their GP.
