It's a Championship version of the Premier League problem of stockpiling young players, never using them and ruining their development, save a few loans to whoever will have themHarry Genshaw wrote:Eaves is a real shame imo. We signed him as a young striker with experience of 3rd tier football, who'd just torn apart a premiership defence. He looked good during his first loan spell but since then he seems to have gone backwards.
He could have 150 games for Oldham now.

I still don't know why we didn't loan him back to Oldham the moment we signed him.Athers wrote:It's a Championship version of the Premier League problem of stockpiling young players, never using them and ruining their development, save a few loans to whoever will have themHarry Genshaw wrote:Eaves is a real shame imo. Sorry, I thought we were going to see youth given its chance under this bright new regime? Surely the only way to give them a chance is by giving them a chance? Or are we just doing what we've always done, only playing them if they're good enough?BWFC_Insane wrote:Why? There is a difference between them being as good as an experienced striker such as Jutkiewicz and being ready for the scrap heap.bobo the clown wrote:In which case you're saying we may as well get rid.BWFC_Insane wrote: if any were that good we'd know by now.
I'd like to see them first.
They might need more experience first via a loan or further development. Or they might be solid squad players without being ones to rely on to fire you to glory.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

We are seeing them given a chance. See Kellet and Threlkeld at the end of the season for example. No doubt both those lads will get even more chances next season.Lord Kangana wrote:Sorry, I thought we were going to see youth given its chance under this bright new regime? Throwing youngsters in that aren't ready does not constitute giving them a chance. Neither does demanding that we play them and if they aren't good enough we bin them off before such a time as they are deemed "ready".

Most seasons we play kids in the last game or so because the game doesn't matter so why not. Then the following season they vanish again... until the last couple of games.
Agree with Athers... Chris Waddle was saying a similar thing the other day.

Re: Abdoulaye's going t'Souk transfer thread
Funny thing about strikers .... you never know till they are tried.
I'm not saying play Iliev and we don't need the Juke. I'm saying we have bright, fast, goal-scoring juniors who deserve to be at least given bench time and tested. He didn't even do that in the final 4 or 5 matches last season.
If he's a 'developer' ... and I honestly think he wants to be .... then why not these ? Or, with his direct knowledge, are they not worth it ?

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I thought Clough was pencilled in for a game at a couple of points last season but got injured?bobo the clown wrote:Funny thing about strikers .... you never know till they are tried.

Re: Abdoulaye's going t'Souk transfer thread
From what I've seen of him (clough), he's a fantastic finisher but really lightweight and I'm not sure if he'd just get manhandled all over the place in the championship. Although the only way we'll know is if we try him.
One point, I thought I'd bring up was Dougies comments last summer about Hall, Sordell and Eaves, saying they're too young to play more than 20games in a season. now looking at this, isn't Hall 21 and Sordell/Eaves 22/23? If they can't play more than 20games a season then how unfit are they??? Look at Luke Shaw, he was 18 and played almost everygame for Southampton last season. I just wonder how real Dougie is being when he says he wants to give youth a chance but then comes out with stuff like he did last summer?

I think he was probably talking in terms of squad strength and not being able to rely on those three for a full season of performances (he was right).wigan white wrote:From what I've seen of him (clough), he's a fantastic finisher but really lightweight and I'm not sure if he'd just get manhandled all over the place in the championship. If any were 1/10th as good as Luke Shaw then obviously it might be different.
I don't know where this message of wanting to give young players a chance has been twisted into "that means he must play every young player all the time". He obviously wants the club to grow its own players and clearly wants to play then when they are ready and it is appropriate.
Being committed to producing your own players doesn't equate to chucking in a load of kids and saying "there you go". It is about playing them at the right time for the right length of time, protecting them when necessary.

I do agree that there's a time and place to play them and they shouldn't necessarily play every game, but when does a player stop being a "Youngster", as previously stated, these aren't 16/17yr olds, some of these are players in their 20's who realistically should be able to play almost every game in a season to a decent standard. This is where my confusion comes in.

Bolton News announcement of Sordell move. Let's hope he's a success then we get some money from the "add on" clauses.
