May as well re-sign Nolan...

I wouldn't mind Matt Phillips or Puncheon off Blackpool/Southampton respectively.

Craig Gardner is Kevin Nolan. Good player, but no in a four four two. Cameron Jerome would waltz into our starting XI at this moment in time, despite being shit. Jay Bothroyd, not being shit, would not only waltz into our starting XI, but be a good signing. As long as he didn't play alongside Davo. Klasnic is essentially disabled. SWP on reasonable wages would be a cracking signing, and Crouch would be too. Neither will happen, and Spurs will demand about £20m for Crouch as they are a sent of cnuts. Sunderland will then pay it. Petrov is shite, but at least he provides the caped inhabitant of the Lofthouse Lower with some fun.

do we know how true this is? I'm not saying it isn't - but it strikes me that there are other reasons he only got subs appearances last season....

1. that he couldn't get ahead of davo and elmo
2. the court case that hung over him for a while

is it really true he can't actually play 90mins?

He didn't look like he could last season at all. But, I think number 2 could have been a big feature as well, he has said that he thinks it hung over his season last year and hopefully that means he'll get better next season.
Regardless of that I think even if he was able he would have been struggling as in the first half of the season to get a start with Elmander and Davies in form and then his courtcase hit and then we had Sturridge for him to compete with.

Pru may well be right - but I'd be surprised if we had signed a player who we already knew could not last 90mins...

also - any player who only plays the occasional game looks a bit leggy towards the end...

Tbf, the season before he could play a lot longer too IIRC

He couldn't oust Sturridge because he was banging them in for fun and Coyle's highly unlikely to drop Davies who has provided the most assists this season. He wasn't likely to drop Elmander who did a job for us in midfield
So what you're saying is we'll spend 4m on. A player who is not as good as the two we had last year but have now gone? And you're happy to do that?

But Elmo cost over 8mil (can anyone adjust for inflation?) and Sturridge has a 20mil price tag attached to him.

Yeah I'm surprised we haven't shown any interest yet. Would be a good (and cheap) bit of business.

We're not going to replace them with players who have the same quality, but we need to replace their goals. Simplistically, the four strikers (Elmo, Sturridge, Klasnic and Davies) got 30 goals between them last season, which is 7.5 each. I wouldn't have thought it was impossible for us to sign two strikers who can get at least 7/8 goals each over the season.

To be fair, it is a long standing tradition at the club...

As anyone who watched Henry Mowbray as one full back and Peter Nicholson as the other...

Well unless Chelsea have a massive change of heart and decide we can have Sturridge for £2m and Elmo has a massive change of heart and comes back on a £2m deal then yes I suppose that's what I'm saying

But then the only alternative at the moment has been mooted as Cameron Jerome. A striker who scored a whopping 3 goals all season and comes with a moohasive unjustified £8m price tag.

I don't understand why you keep coming back to a player we've repeatedly stated we have no interest in.

Because that's one of the strikers mentioned in Gossip/Transfer rumours as is Rodrigo.

According to this site, Newcastle are coming in for Gardner for a price of £5million.

I was about to book the taxi for him, but they're actually talking about Craig Gardner.

LL do the whole headslap thingy will you.

To be honest I think Jerome for 5m would be better value than Rodrigo for 4. Just think rodrigo is some way off being a centre forward in the premier league and Jerome as poor as he is in front of goal is a handful sometimes in the same way KD is. But it's ridiculous to suggest they're the only 2 options!

Aye, I wasn't suggesting for a second that they are the only two options, just only two that have been mentioned so far.

We agree to disagree on this one, I think Rodrigo would be better option and some others don't but that's why we debate on this lovely forum of ours
