Re: Players you wished we'd kept
Would love to have seen Ricketts and Gudjohnson form a partnership in that first season in the Prem. Would have been an amazing strike force.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

But did we play with two up top?Lord Kangana wrote:Would love to have seen Ricketts and Gudjohnson form a partnership in that first season in the Prem. Would have been an amazing strike force.

Martin Pike , I was stood in the paddock when someone shouted sign the contract , really weird how you remember things like that , was that one of those replays against swindon in the cup ? great days , he was one of those players we managed to get at the time who was playing in a league below themselves .
Andy Walker is the one i would have liked to have kept but we did alright without him in the end

Fairclough's last season with us was the first one at the Reebok. Defo wasn't player of the year thenBijou Bob wrote:Matt Clarke (We couldn't afford the £1 million transfer fee) and Chris Fairclough, player of the year and then released, I never understood why??

He was the first one that came to my mind as well. Covered both the problematic right back and left back spots, and did it well.Nicko58 wrote:I've always thought it a shame that we couldn't persuade Vincent Candela to sign a permanent deal.
That being said, based on his Wikipedia photo, he may well have scared women and children away from the Reebok had we kept him on.

Re: Players you wished we'd kept
What was that quote from Candela about never playing in England again because people used to try and tackle him?

I often think people blow Candela out of all proportion - as if he was some kind of defensive god... he only played 10 times for us FFS!!
Re: Players you wished we'd kept
But in those 10 games he played extremely well, I would say that I would have liked to have seen him in a White shirt morethebish wrote:I often think people blow Candela out of all proportion - as if he was some kind of defensive god... he only played 10 times for us FFS!!

Re: Players you wished we'd kept
Remember when Stuart Ripley came on loan from Boro?
Ten seconds into his first game and....Goal!
He had a half-decent career with Blackburn but at the time I thought we had to break the bank to sign him up.
Phil Neal either must have seen how far his talent could take him or couldn't afford him or not had a clue.
One of the three.
Disappointed when Mark Gavin left too.
We've also had some really good 'reliable' players that did well for the club. Andy May, Mike Whitlow, Mr Chris, Gerry Taggart - all players that you look back on fondly but I suppose for most of them their time was up.
I'd love to see Gerry Taggart again. The nearest we've come since then is probably Robbo - but he lacked Taggarts 'finesse'.
No one gone for Vaz Te I see.
I reckon this will be his year (again).

I'm not asking you to 'think outside the box' I just wish you'd have a rummage around in it once in a while.

I'd love to see a central defence of Gudni and Colin Hendry back. Campo in front of them and Jorkayeff buzzing around in front of him with Anelka on point duty.

Which isn't far off the number of games Hierro played in midfield in for us (after he was transfer listed in December for being absolutely useless as a centre back).thebish wrote:I often think people blow Candela out of all proportion - as if he was some kind of defensive god... he only played 10 times for us FFS!!

Re: Players you wished we'd kept
I'd just like to say that Youri has to be the best player I've ever seen in a Wanderers shirt and he's probably one of the best I've seen full stop.
I loved the way he was just able to stop.
And wait.
And wait.
And hold the ball.
And without moving keep it.
Until he was ready to make his pass.
Pure genius man.
I did see Georghe Hagi play a couple of times (once at Burnden playing for Brescia and once for Romania in USA94) and both times he was breathtaking.
I think he scored from the half-way line for Brescia didn't he?
During the World Cup he seemed to be thinking 'What the hell am I doing playing with these nuggets?'
We should of signed him.

Aye... though he only had to beat Aidan Davidson...coffeymagic wrote: I think he scored from the half-way line for Brescia didn't he?
Didn't he get a hat-trick? Was basically 11 vs Hagi...

Re: Players you wished we'd kept
Most players that leave tend to step down a level really, we don't seem to pick up too many on their way up so in that regard I think Gudjohnsen, Anelka and Cahill all fit in to that profile. A common link between the three....
