By the way, I thi k Evatt and his system would be a better fit higher up the league with better players at his disposal, and I do believe he is a good manager, but not in this league.

Stay for me. With the caveat that anything other than automatic promotion sees him gone.

Do you think firmly that target will be met? Because it’s a bit pointless if not. And if you believe he will achieve that next season then the caveat is unnecessary.Gary the Enfield wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 6:04 pmStay for me. Do you think by replacing him we automatically get progress and top 2? Cos if not, why the desperation to replace.him?

Because we’ve had two seasons back to back with identical problems and outcomes. If you think sticking with him is the answer what is it that we need to change next season to not have the same thing happen again? It’s not that we’ve been ‘unlucky’ this is something that we have inbuilt. So - Evatt said he couldn’t understand it. So what answers will he have?dave the minion wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 6:28 pmIt's not pointless, it's very valid.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 6:26 pmDo you think firmly that target will be met? I have seen a lot of managers. You get a sense as to when they will take you forwards and when they won’t. Evatt for me was given benefit of the doubt for this season and now I’m convinced he isn’t taking us forward. We are for me at the Owen Coyle point when I knew keeping him would damage us. It did. This is the same. There are no answers he can offer now.
And there is no guarantee of success with anyone but for me it’s essential we get someone with experience of taking a team out of this league. That means you know that said person knows what it takes. At the very least. I’m not interested in being an experiment. I want hard nosed proven track records.

I disagree. It's not for me to say whether the target will be met, that will be Evatt's target. Failure to achieve that will result in him losing his job. Call it incentivisation.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 6:26 pmDo you think firmly that target will be met? Because it’s a bit pointless if not. Knee-jerk sackings seldom work well in the initial following seasons. The new manager will have his own ideas on personnel and may not like the squad he has adopted, A squad that has gotten us further every season he has been in charge. We have narrowly missed out on promotion this year.
If we give Evatt another season the Board have 12 months to scout for a replacement as opposed to sacking him now, having to trawl round for a suitable (better) replacement and then let the new guy get players in to suit HIS style of play. We'll have missed all our key targets and be scrabbling round with two weeks to the start of the season. Also, if we wait another season, a lot of the peripheral squad will be out of contract saving any unnecessary payoffs, So he stays for me. For now.

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?
Emotions are still running high at present and I'm still seriously fecked off but trying to look at it calmly;
Pros - Season on season improvement in terms of league position. A healthy points total this year that would have seen us promoted in other years. Attractive football more often than not. Rising attendances to unprecedented levels under his tenure.
Cons - An inability to win, or even turn up, in the big games. A stubborn approach to 1 style of football and tactic and an inability to turn things around when it's not working. A thin skin and flappable gums - a lethal combination.
If he walks (I'm sure we won't pot him) then the next appointment is super crucial. Someone who can use the existing squad and with a bit extra, a tweak here and there, get this side promoted. As has been said, a Rioch to freshen up a Phil Neal squad.
I'll not be sad if he stays but if we have a season like Neal's last one, it'll have been a(nother) wasted opportunity.

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?
I wonder what effect Sam Hird leaving had? I know we went on that winning run immediately after he left, but after that we’ve fallen apart defensively really. I wonder how much of that winning run was still remembering his coaching rather than a reflection on the new guy.
I’m just about in the Evatt stays camp, but I’d maybe insist at tweaking the structures around him so he’s got some new voices, and look at freshening up the squad.

I think we'd been poor before Hird's departure, hadn't we?
And in any event, our most glaring failure have been occurring since before this season.

Agreed. It's frailty. Can't point to the stat block that encompasses it, so it doesn't exist. Except on too many occasions, a home tie v Barnsley with 22'000 of us on-side and in the final...nicholaldo wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 8:44 pmI think we'd been poor before Hird's departure, hadn't we?

Stay if he's up for it. Go if he's not.
Never liked him as a person, but rate him as a manager. Personality failings have been on show for a few months now. Needs to sort his head out and find the drive to scream into another season. Nothing less than that will do it.
We have a better chance of promotion with a fully on it Evatt than almost any new manager. It does have to be next season though now. Boom or bust for him now.
His big issue is he's been promising some of these lads he will make them Premier League players. How many still believe after yesterday? Both in themselves and their teammates.
Huge job on.

Yup. I thought we would this season and believe that we *should* have and Evatt has to take responsibility. He had a great chance to get the autos and I can work somewhat with the injuries issue, but it was still there to take.
The final is another issue entirely. The players were there. Oxford deserves all the credit in the world, but are not a special team and didn't play a special game. We handed them an easy result.
So Evatt now either gets his shit together or he leaves. I think he offers a better chance of going up than replacing him probably would, but if he's not motivated he's a liability and needs to go.

Evatt has to rip this squad apart and bin players he’s spent years telling us how great they are. I just don’t see that.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 10:48 pmYup. Next season this league has a lot of strong teams potentially with managers who have got out of it before. Most won’t be trying to win 75% possession they will be tough to break down and carry threat and be physical. At least8 teams are who I reckon when they play us can better how Oxford did us yesterday.
I’m not really sure what answers Evatt has. It will need a pure fight, for us to become a significantly harder team to score against and edging out a load of marginal games.
Evatt hasn’t shown us he’s capable of delivering the characteristics I’ve seen in the teams who have got out of this league and will start next season from a place of deflation under justified and immediate pressure to look like a team destined for automatic promotion.
I just don’t see it and think that a change to a manager who has won promotion from this league before and can create a more basic structure and style that is repeatable time and time again and under pressure will give us the best chance.

What were Pompey's long term injuries? 10? 3 in Feb?GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 10:48 pmYup. It needs different thinking. Some different personnel and a few ounces of nous.

Mousinho did a great job. Evatt didn't.
