I'm not sure it is a question of talent. Mark Davies has talent.

It may sound odd but I think he is skilful he just has the wrong skills for a good footballer. I've been thinking about this a lot while watching the world cup, so it may seem weird that my explanation is in the context of a comparison between England and Germany but... If you think of dribbling it's tactically simple (head down beat an opponent or two) and technically difficult, it's a selfish low percentage play. If England and Germany had a dribbling contest we win 100% IMO. Walcott, Chamberlain, Wilshire, Lennon, Sterling, Townsend, Sturridge etc. But in a game of football obviously we're nowhere near their level. The Germans play an exact opposite type of football to the dribblers above and by extension to Mavies. They play tactically complicated (move teams around, get 3,4 people to occupy a full back, weird free kicks, unbelievably good corners etc.) but technically simple game, mainly passing and running, of course some of what they do is technically difficult but on the whole they always play the percentages they don't try to Hollywood it, if Fritz is on the goal line for a tap in. I think that's why people find it hard to understand why England are so crap at football we have good individuals technically good players, but they're not always the best skills to have and they're poor tactically as individuals and collectively.

Sorry if that was a bit OT and jumbled up. I suppose in summary what I'm trying to say is that Mavies may be technically better than say Gary Speed but GS is a vastly superior footballer.

In our last Premier League season he was more than pretty good... and he's not just a dribbler, he has good movement off the ball, can spot a pass and can generally be that bridge between midfield and striker. To me he's definitely our best player and not someone I'd want to lose really, because I don't think he's THAT injury-prone that it's worth having him off the books. As others have said, he makes the others look like footballers when he plays.

This is what I don't get. He wants to be a proper professional footballer, well that's something you would be very lucky to do living in your hometown all your life... It's clear that Southampton don't want or else they wouldn't have let us take him, so where does he look now then? Portsmouth or Bournemouth... 'homesickness' kind of limits your options when you're in a niche job such as pro footballer... you go where the work is, and the work was on offer at Bolton.

Well I'm not sure Toure is thick. He just fancied a move. But he hasn't ripped his contract up and is now staying at City it seems.

I get that footballers do what is in their best interests, however that might be achieved, but not many would rip up a contract and lose their salary for no reason.....

As if there was ever any danger of Toure ripping up his contract. As opposed to being given a big fat new one, at City or elsewhere.

Mark Davies completed 392 of his 456 passes last season, an 86% success rate higher than any other player bar Andy Kellett and Chris Lester, whose cameos barely count (Lester made, and completed, one pass; Kellett 13 of 15). There are those who say that pass rates don't count for much, but I'd say that's good ball retention for a naturally attacking midfielder. Seems to me he's our best hope in that No.10 role, and he's also quite capable of playing in deeper midfield if we go with two strikers (perhaps split, like Juke-and-Mason did).

Quite aside from the fact we aren't spending money (but it isn't yet a fire sale), we couldn't replace him for £5m. It would sadden me deeply if he left, more than any other player's departure or the non-return of Juke/Dawson.
