I think just having someone who has the ability to actually manage individuals would be a good start. If I was playing devil's advocate I may even say SB has been relying on people to tell her that x or y is a good football coach, etc, and priotising that over the traits leaders in senior positions need. You want a mix, and Lord knows the second coming of Pep has shown himself lacking in the latter part of that. He is running away from what coaching is, to paraphrase NFL coach mike tomlin.

I think it was the former Bayern manager who basically said "60% of being a good manager is not being a dick."
You can understand why so many ex-footballers find it tricky.

Keith Hill has never had any success outside of Rochdale and absolutely nothing but failure at any club approaching our size. So let’s to pretend that Keith Hill is some experienced wizened boardroom advisor type.The_Gun wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 9:30 pmKeith Hill was a jaded old hand with a book full of contacts. I suspect she’s a great person but the reality is that what works in competitive sport is different to what works in broader business. You can evaluate a plan to turn a business round and decide if someone has the ability to do so. In football that’s far harder to do. You may will them to do so, but it needs a lot of things and a particular character and personality that are not required in many businesses and really can’t be learned.
We sorely need football expertise in the boardroom and not some data nuts either. Proper experience.
We need people who can steer the club and find the right manager. People that know the game inside out, have a book full of relevant contacts and know what managing at a club like this entails and can judge characters accordingly.
Gartside got lucky with Big Sam to an extent but he’d also been around the game and knew a bit and knew that Roy Evans was not the choice for where Bolton were at.
The thing with Sharon is she’s root and branch reviewed her way to maybe a lot of answers but to the wrong questions.

You need to be a bit of a dick though. How many top managers aren’t? I think most of it is about being a dick that people want to play and building a spirit that makes people run through walls for you.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 9:51 pmI think it was the former Bayern manager who basically said "60% of being a good manager is not being a dick."

Coaches can sort tactics out. They can do training. But a manager needs to lead. It might be old fashioned but it’s still the key to most success. Pep might be a tactical wizard but his main asset was building a spirit and a setup where he could get players to do things they weren’t used to and want to do them.

9th placed finish? I think we'll do well to finish top half on current form.
Right now, I think I'd take Keith Hill coming back. Yes he was an embarrassment, divisive etc yet he got more from a far more limited squad of players than Evatt currently is with his collection of spineless, nancy boys.

The mitigation for this dross has been going on for the length of the "project." For the most part, whether we back it or don't, the Emporer's New Clothes have been around. Last year's "most goals ever" was +1 Parkie's promotion season (I think) a chunk behind our best league season ever. We need to sack off this shit thinking and build a promotion team. Project failed.

It depends what you mean.
Everyone at the club has to believe you are putting success first. If that's the case you can be a dick if it's in service to that goal. Pep will feck you over personally, but because it's best for the club.
Once it's obvious it's self-serving things go wrong. Evatt has been there for a while. Sam fell foul of that with a lot of players and staff in his later career too.
People have to believe you are acting in their best interests, even if it's only as part of a group.
We'll see on the football pitch how his rant is taken by the dressing room. If they take it as a wake-up call, fair enough to him. I suspect not.

You can be a dick chucking the cups about, bollockings etc but that needs to be complemented by the stuff that makes people want to run through walls for you; trust, vision, man management and the rest. If you don't can't do the latter, you can't be surprised when the former doesn't work. I'm not running through walls for someone I can't trust. That ain't a leader.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 9:57 pmYou need to be a bit of a dick though. How many top managers aren’t? Yeah sure. We have a number of players here who are here for the lifestyle. Out drinking frequently. Larging it up, posting on their social media burners. The fact they have to rock up and play or train is an inconvenience. Not all but some.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 10:08 pmIt depends what you mean.

However we also had that when Parky arrived yet he got those players playing for the shirt in a way we’ve not come close to seeing since. So it can be done.

Yep completely. You can have an ego and an arrogance but you have to know how to manage. When to throw cups round, when to put your arms round the shoulders. Allardyce was one of the best man managers going his outward projection a self caricature - but players wanted to play for him. Fergie maybe the best ever in that regard. Jose for a while topped even that. But yeah you have to show the players that you are for them, no point just being a dick.KeyserSoze wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 10:17 pmYou can be a dick chucking the cups about, bollockings etc but that needs to be complemented by the stuff that makes people want to run through walls for you; trust, vision, man management and the rest. Ideally the players should mostly like the manager, and he, or she, should be very good at coaching them at football. That’s pretty much the extent of the remit, for me.

Re: High Noon Cover up. V Rotherham away Sat 11th Jan 12-30.
Of course it can.
It seems unlikely they're going to push the button, though. Maybe I'm wrong (I don't know anyone on the board and others on here may), but I'm assuming the public-facing stuff is as it seems and he is being backed.
I'm expecting a very rough ride for the rest of the season. I've changed my schedule around this evening to allow me to go to every game (possibly bar Lincoln on Tuesday, not sure yet).
I'm not anticipating seeing a new man in the dugout, so I have to hope he gets the reaction he's clearly after. Sheehan and Toal will help him, but it's not enough on current evidence.

The quote from Nagelsmann was "thirty percent of coaching is tactics, seventy percent social competence".
It echoes Rioch's comments about treating players like sons, and my very own theory that the best football managers - and probably managers of any kind - are like a favourite schoolteacher: able to have a laugh and make the environment fun, capable of delivering the kind of bollocking that ensures no taking of piss occurs.

Which all goes out of the window if you win. That's all football is about really. If teams stayed home and just tossed a coin somebody would complain you were doing it wrong if you lost.nicholaldo wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 10:48 pmThe quote from Nagelsmann was "thirty percent of coaching is tactics, seventy percent social competence".

I think the point is that winning might occur more often than it would otherwise if the manager matches the above description.

I think Shazz is a decent club custodian. I'd rather her than many. She's loyal and supports her picks. Her judgement and acumen have pretty self evidently served her well and it's her and the board, not us, putting in dosh.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 9:54 pmKeith Hill has never had any success outside of Rochdale and absolutely nothing but failure at any club approaching our size.
