Certainly a country's culture is going to play a role with alcohol, but isn't class going to have an effect as well. I only say this because in England there is a significant football, rugby and cricket culture at least in regards to team sports. Is that as diversified in most other countries. Is football the working man's game in most countries. I am not referring to alcohol abuse so much as being the problem but the ability to handle wealth. I am sure I have read a study in the states a few years ago that said the lower class the background of a sporting star, the higher the risk that that wealth will be squandered away quickly. Yes I know it takes a lot of alcohol to squander away a multi million pound salary. That study emphasized boxing and basketball.

A lot of Rugby players are millionaires.. They may talk the talk when it comes to educationa nd behaviour, but there's more problems with Rugby 'stars' getting leathered and abusing 'normal' people... it just doesn't get the same kind of coverage because footballers are an easy target.

That campaign by nurses a couple of seasons ago really p*ssed me off... "We want every Premier League footballer to give us a weeks wage. If you don't it's bad publicity for you, so nerr.."

Where were the requests for a portion of Politicians wages? Rugby players? IPL players? Bankers?

11 Spaniards (is it now 23?) have won the World Cup, no Englishman has in my lifetime. Indeed no Englishman has won the European Championships in my lifetime.

I would suggest the latter is much more reflective of a national footballing culture than your proposition. And just out of interest, how many foreigners played alongside those Englishmen (as in how many players were involved in the winning of the trophy who weren't English?). Winning the Champions League is much more indicative of our games financial hegemony.

Well I can't be arsed to go back and count it all up. If my maths is on the ball, there must have been at least 132 players in those finals, so that's 110 who aren't English. I would be suprised if any individual nation had more than 22 though. I believe the highest concentration of players from a single nation in a starting line-up is 6, by both United ('08) and Barcelona ('09).

As a group, English players are not as good as their foreign counterparts at major tournaments, whether they drink or don't drink, they've proven this over the past 44 years. However, if it was simply a case of 'drinking alcohol and being unintelligent making them poorer players', why would they be performing so well in the Champions League, domestically and (in the case of the WC Qualifiers atleast) internationally?

Is it just me who gets angry when you read about the antics of highly paid professional footballers, especially when you read about the lives of some of the struggling potential olympic athletes in the UK who live off very little but still remain dedicated.

Is it really too much to ask for footballers to go home and night during the season, to not smoke and not drink excessively? Or am I just crazy?

Obviously it's not just you, as it gets brought up a lot.

As long as they aren't breaking any club rules, what's the problem? You can be dedicated and still let off steam every now and then. To go back the original player in question, Mark Davies is playing more consistently now than he has done while he's been here, why do you care what he does in his free time?
