Andy, can I make it clear that I did not post this to elicit 'glory' tales from the 1980s.

Nor do I think that is what has been written in response, with the possible exception of the one post you have specifically referred to in more than 3 pages of posts. And even that is tenuous.

It was my first experience at such close quarters with a group of fans who, although not violent, were - in my opinion - acting as terrible ambassadors for a town I love, and appalling role models for the children they were accompanying. I was at a loss as to what I should say to them, and thought I'd put it out on this forum to see what others thought.

In the great scheme of things however, I don't think we do too badly and we'll never equal the likes of Millwall (Eh Bruce?!) Cardiff or one or two of the Midland clubs thank God.

I've only been to the New Den once but as we walked towards the away end we passed the world famous Millwall creche.

Outside stood a crowd of dirty faced chirpy lavverbal Cock-er-nee nippers wiv cheeky malevoient grins on their boat races.

As we passed they welcomed us to Landan with 'Fack off u Norven C**ts.' Their proud dads ruffled their Billy Bear - glowing in the satisfaction that can only come from knowing your bin lids are growing up just like you.

Maybe I'm talking a different time, but the late 70's there used to be a fairly decent rumble nearly every fecking home game round the back of the Paddock.

I remember a night match, League cup quarter final against Leeds in the late seventies. They held the Leeds fans back and I walked out of the Embankment to see about 300 blokes casually pretending to wait at the bus stop out side the King Bill for the next bus. I don't think a single coach had a window left in it as they passed me at the Greyhound Stadium.

Mid seventies against teams like Stoke and Sheffield United, I had my boot laces and belt confiscated by the cops outside the ground. "They'll be here in a box when you get out lad". Never did see them again! The 20 minutes pre match was spent avoiding bricks and bits of flying concrete, darts, golf balls and on one particularly bad day, a motorbike helmet.

I went to Millwall away once at 15 years old. McGinlay scored the winner in the 70 odd minute and we had to have a police escort from the ground. My dad as a responsible adult felt that was a good day out

There was probably more hassle when the fence went up than when there was none. Forget which game it was but at one, both home and away fans were taking runs and jumping at the wire trying to knock each other off. Chester Zoo had nothing on it.
