Who is to say Bolton fans wouldn't do the same and start a new team?

Re: Bolton Furies?
is this a hypothetical question or are their genuine takeover talks?
Re: Bolton Furies?
Who could say? If the club continued to play at the Reebok however, I very much doubt it would happen.ChrisC wrote:Who is to say Bolton fans wouldn't do the same and start a new team?Enoch wrote:Slightly different being that they moved 80 miles and AFC Wimbledon was founded.
F.C. United of Manchester seem to have found their level, doubt the Glazers give them much thought.

I thought I heard recently that Manure volume 2 were going from strength to strength and have just started building a new stadium.

In my lifetime, we've been in all 4 League Divisions, been on the verge of bankruptcy, moved from our spiritual home at Burnden, had kits in many, many colours, lost our elephants and all sorts of other things.
I'll talk about what's being proposed thanks. If I could guarantee it was going to secure the Club in the medium to long term, I'd consider it.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: Bolton Furies?
I don't think I could see myself supporting another side to the same degree, though I feel like I'd move away from the club. I support Bolton because they're my family's team, but I really don't have any connection to the town other than that. I was born abroad, have only spent 6 months actually living in Bolton (and that was only because my Mum decided to take me and my brother to my Nan's when my Dad was in Bosnia) and have always had to follow the Wanderers from afar.
I don't go to many games, don't buy that many shirts and basically don't get to see much of the club, but I love it. I remember how gutting it felt when Holdsworth skied it in the semi at the old Wembley, I remember how tense I felt on the mega-relegation showdown when Jay-Jay kept us up, I remember how good I felt when we drew with Bayern bloody Munich at their gaff. I only cherish those moments though because I chose to support Bolton, and the club has a particular identity and status to me. Fundamentally change that and I'd really think seriously about 'leaving'.
Because really what does changing club colours and name do? Nothing. Get the team performing on the pitch and that's how it becomes globally known, if that is the intention. I wonder how many shirts Citeh sell now compared to their... less flush... days? 1000's of % probably, because they have the players that people want to see and are playing at the top level. Their name and colours are exactly the same as when they turned out at Maine Road to play Gillingham or whoever in Division 2 16 years ago. It might seem petty to be annoyed at changing something so 'simple' as shirt colour or name, but when you support something that is so transient as a football club (the players all move on, staff etc.) those are the only things that are constant (nowadays anyway). As I have little to tie me to Bolton altogether, what I do have means a lot. I was annoyed when we went to all-white under Big Sam...

For those readers who've been here too long, what about if we moved the club to the Lake District?

Is it the name? If so, we'd have to concede that Christ Church FC and Bolton Wanderers were two completely different entities, so probably not (although it is interesting to note that the club celebrated 125 years on the anniversary of the name change to Bolton Wanderers, rather than on the foundation of Christ Church FC...)
If it is merely some sort of tenuous "thread of history" then the club would still be the same. Although you could argue that the number of changes made in one go constituted some sort of qualitative change in the nature of the club. But I'm not convinced.
As it stands, I'd say go for it. It would, at least, be funny. But then, I haven't been to a match since they sacked Coyle, and don't intend to go until Davies and Gartside are given the boot.

Yes, but on one condition: we restore the red polka dotted kit.

The argument is won in such is our hatred for some insignificant black country team. On a separate note I also hear we have had runs in with Swindon at one point along with another southern team that totally slips my mind.superjohnmcginlay wrote:No No No. Because then them horrible bstds from Wolverhampton would be able to claim to be the one and only wanderers. We also played in pink once, I really need to get that shirt!thebish wrote:meh... we've played in red before... the crowd would still sing "we are the one and only wanderers" (look what happened at Newcastle when the bloke tried to change the stadium name..)
we might have a new official name - but i don't see how an owner could decide what people call us as a nickname - Red Dawn would never catch on - we'd still be the trotters or the wanderers despite what a new owner wanted... you can;'t choose your own nickname...
my support has survived moving many miles away from the town and the club upping sticks and buggering off to Horwich and changing the name of the stadium to a sports clothing company - so it would easily survive this - especially if it were in preference to going out of business altogether...
bring it on moneybags!
