Gartside wouldn't have to speak to Coyle to recommend him.

More intriguingly, why the juddering chuff does Nixon post on a Blackburrrrrrrrrn board if he doesn't support them? Has he got self-esteem issues?

Garty did recommend Coyle for the Burnley job. I remember both him and Kilby said as much when we were in the process of bringing Coyle here.

Lots of references to the recommendation all over t'internet but strikingly this stands out:

From Wiki:

On 21 November 2007, Burnley were granted permission to discuss their managerial vacancy with Coyle after a compensation fee was agreed with St. Johnstone.[12] He was appointed as Burnley's new manager the following day.[13] Coyle was given a reference by then Scotland manager Alex McLeish to support his Burnley application, and was also recommended by Bolton chairman Phil Gartside after they appointed Gary Megson as their new manager, as Coyle was Gartside's 2nd choice for the Bolton job after Megson. Burnley Chairman Barry Kilby, Dec 2008...
“The appointment of Owen came a bit from left field,” Kilby said. “We were interviewing a few high-profile candidates but Brendan Flood, one of my directors, spoke to Phil Gartside at Bolton and he said, ‘There is this guy up in Scotland you should have a chat with.’

“I must admit that was the first time I had ever heard of Owen Coyle but I certainly don’t regret it now. It’s the best tip-off we’ve ever had.

“I arranged to meet him in Scotland [where he was managing St Johnstone at the time] and was impressed with the sheer force of his personality. That’s what got him the job. He just ticked every single box I had and came across as the man I wanted to take on.

“All appointments are gambles, aren’t they, so I suppose this one was, too, but being a name doesn’t guarantee anything.”

I'm pretty skeptical, albeit curious.

MEN reporting we're looking to thak Rakitic from Schalke...think that one's been on here before.

And that Mark Hughes has his eye on Al Habsi for <cough> £5m <cough> - don't think Al Habsi represents poor value at £5m, I would just be surprised if we got £5m for a goalie...

Owen Coyle is a legend at BWFC for one thing alone.

Its that goal he scored in the play off final to kick start the comeback with about 12 minutes to go.

As I recall, that keeper who was on loan up at Carlisle is a legend in their eyes because of 1 important goal. Burnley fans need to get out of Burnley a bit more and get some perpsective.

Thats all true LK, but to be fair we'd probably be as unknowledgeable about Burnley cult heroe's from the mid 90's!

This is the exact thing I say to my (still) bitter Burnley mates. 'Legend' isn't something you can pin down with stats.

But we will never be in a position to challenge for Europe if we sell our best players for anything less than silly money, so 20mil for Cahill minimum in January if Liverpool and/or Chelsea are so desperate for a new centre half! If they wont pay that kind of money then keep him, if its true that Eddie isn't going to call his loans in then don't sell him at least until the summer.
Doesn't Cahill get some say in this? 20mil? Keep on dreaming.
I think that is FiO's point - £20mill would be silly money - nobody would pay that. In other words - says FiO - unless the offer is so ludicrous as to defy logic (£20mill) - then we keep him.

(FiO may have overlooked the existence of a release clause where we have to allow him to talk to clubs if they reach an offer-threshold - set somewhere, I believe, lower than £20million)
People are also overlooking that the longer we keep him the more his contract runs down and so does his value.

It is quite clearly part of the plan to sell Cahill and I guess it will either be January or the summer. IF Gartside and Coyle think they can get more in January than the summer I can't see any real reason why they wouldn't sell.

We can't be running around scared of selling players anymore. As a club its part of the new strategy.

Managers like Ferguson have had the knack of selling players (who the fans didn't want to go) at the right time down the years. We need to do similar.
I was just helping Seanworth understand FiO..

I disagree with FiO - I think we should move while Cahill's star is unblemished - and if we get offered anything like £12mill - then we'd be daft not to take the cash. Who knows how much of that cash Coyle would get to spend - but it would surely give us resources to strengthen in more than one area... a promising young CB - and summat for BWFCi to drool about in midfield!
I didn't ignore the release clause but that only applies if Cahill wants to leave, if he does then yes he will talk to others after that threshold is met but if he doesn't then my point was that Bolton should hold out of 20 mil in January if the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea are desperate. i.e. it all depends on what Cahill wants after the threshold is met.

Remember it is usually silly money that clubs want to sell a player in January, well it is when we are trying to buy someone so why should it be different if we are the selling club.
Depression is just a state of mind, supporting Bolton is also a state of mind hence supporting Bolton must be depressing QED

I guess we're still in there with a chance of giving him a new contract as he wants to stay in the area.

Again the way I read it is that OC would be happy for Elmander to sign but equally not distraught if he got 5M and was able to spend it in January.

Thing to remember is during the summer Coyle explained he might have to wait a while to "build a team in his own image" I guess selling a couple of players gives him the chance to do that.

Strangely I'm not that worried about it either way!
5mil is silly money for Elmander in my view so I would take it, but I don't see any of the "top" premiership clubs being able to guarantee him a starting place. Particularly if it takes as long as it did at Bolton for him to settle in. He is scoring at present because of how Bolton are playing, who he is playing with and how Coyle is managing him. There is no gaurantee that he can continue doing that even at Liverpool!

we'll get five mill solely because he's not playing for bolton, i'd bet if he were bolton's first team goalie for 4 months , theyd [t'papers] be talking 1m , if that.

.. even if we were in the top eight and not next to bottom.

Aye - Lescott (22 million) is twice the player Cahill is.

I don't think that's how it works. Anyway, if a club is big enough to spend £17 million on Cahill, he's going to want to talk to them.

If someone is stupid enough to offer £17m for him then fine, if someone offers £10m for him I'd still say fine.
