These are two players Coyle worked with for a considerable amount of time. I will defer to his judgement for now. Last season Eagles scored 11 and had 9 assists. Which marks him out near the top of the championship midfield performers! They know what Coyle demands he knows what they offer. Would they be my personal first choice? Probably not but they improve upon the incredibly light squad we have now and if Coyle thinks they are good enough he is probably the best placed to judge!

Not sure why people are saying Eagles and Mears arent good enough for the Prem. They have both shown in the past that they are very talented players - particularly Eagles - and both could play far better than they ever have in the past under a manager they enjoy playing under and with better players. Also, they are both at an age where they are at their peak. If only one of them reaches mid table level of performance in the Prem it is still a steal at £2.75m.

In terms of RB, I think our best is Sam Ricketts, but obviously with him it's a question of fitness; what's the point of us having 3 RB's when he is fit again though? If we're that unsure, why not try and get a loanee in as short term cover rather than a player that's arguably worse than what we have already...and we have Wheater, Knight and Cahill that aren't all going to start as CB's....yes I know Cahill may go, but that's where we are right now.

I'm not saying any of the above is ideal and if we had lots of money, then yep get Mears and Eagles in, but if our resource is scarce, why spend it on "fillers"?

Someone has posted that they're both currently on £12k per week; that's not pocket change even without a rise in wages for players that don't appear to look like forst team regulars......or will they be??

I'm not convinced by this. Mark Davies operates in the middle, and Ricky G on the left or - at a push in the middle. To have either as a preferred right wing option to cover for Lee over an established right sided player is something I can't agree with.

Unless said right sided player is absolute tosh, and I don't think Eagles is. Time will tell, but I've seen a bit of him in the Champ and I reckon he'll add some much-needed depth and a wee bit of quality to our right hand side.

I agree they wouldn't have helped v Stoke, though.

Ha, I mean I'm just so negative all the time........

Mind with the bids in for Eagles, Mears, Jeffren and NGog, plus an offer on the table to Reo Coker, can we finally put to bed the ridiculous notion that we have no money available?

I'm in agreement with you too BWFCi. Let's reserve judgement about players until we see them pull on the white shirt and play for the Wanderers.

If CYL is out we have a belting player who can play on the right in the form of Mark Davies and Ricardo Gardner could adequately reserve there.

Mark Davis is fine right and centre, but I doubt Ricky (and yes, I know he scored our first against Bayern Munich from there) would work out there. He's a left sider who wanders a bit but left is where he's best.

I actually said the second of those two quotes, but okay.

Will it make a difference? If so...

Zoltan Gera and Jonathon Spector. Billy Jones and Jason Puncheon. Infact, as a third choice right back, Reo-Coker would be fine.

Certainly

However, there needs to be a caveat that

1a) we get first dibs and
1b) the price is agreed now

See Ali Al Habsi for the reasons why
That's two caveats. You can call the, '1a' and '1b' all you like, but there are two!

Don't get precious about it Tom, it was only being pointed out that no alternatives were offered. Agree that Jones and Puncheon would be good signing, would you not say they were similar to Mears and Eagles?

Zoltan Gera and Jonathon Spector are on Premier League wages. We're trying to reduce the wage bill not increase it. Even if they were prepared to accept what we can offer them, do you honestly think Gera would be happy to sit on the bench as understudy to CYL?

Billy Jones has never played in the Premier League so how is he less of a risk than Tyrone mears? Jason Puncheon has had a season with Blackpool and no other Premier League club has offered him a deal.

Do you honestly think Reo-Coker would be interested in signing for a club that intended to play him at right back?

So which club is going to loan us their first, or even second choice, right back?

I don't really want to argue the merits of players we're not going to sign, which is why I didn't name names in the first place.

Still, I'd say no, in the sense that both Jones and Spector can play in different positions. If Ricketts comes back and regains his place, there'll be two players picking up Premier League wages, but contributing nothing.

No point buying anyone unless you think they can be first choice in their position.
David Wheater. Marcos Alonso. Rodrigo. Ivan Klasnic. Martin Petrov.

Anyway, of the latest crop of transfer rumours, N'Gog is the best striker we've been linked with this summer. That's not difficult, but at least it's something.

Mears will do a job, but he's no improvement and we don't need him. Eagles isn't good enough.

I disagree with LL. There was a point to signing Kevin Poole, even though he was never going to be first choice in his position; however, most of the players you have listed don't fit that bill. Coyle no doubt believed when signing them all of those COULD be first choice in their position (in the case of Alonso and Rodrigo, in the future, and Klasnic, not 90 minutes week in week out) even if they haven't turned out to be.

N'Gog is not the best striker we have been linked with, but he is the best striker we have been linked with permanently, and by some distance.

Do you think Eagles and Mears are happy to sign for us as back up? They were all reasonable answers to a stupid question.

Mears and Eagles have apparently accepted terms and just need medical clearance before signing.
