Re: Wanderers v Hillbilly Banjo players
I think Mavies is really the new Paul Scholes, not Holden at least in his ability to tackle successfully. He isn't a dirty player which is why it seemed odd he should be sent off but the first yellow was a mistimed two footed job and the second was a short guy trying to challenge for a ball in the air.Not intential but still a yellow card.
I feel a bit sorry for big Sam today.Like Hughton at Newcastle he's done a good job,is British and is now out of work.In Sam's case can't be anything to do with results but perhaps having seen other small times succeeding with attractive football they felt the need to get shut.Allardyce has become a victim of his own obsession with a one dimentional percentages game.It just looks outdated now unless you mix it up a bit more.

Clearly not the new Paul Scholes, then.Ianmooreslovechild wrote:I think Mavies is really the new Paul Scholes...[snip]...He isn't a dirty player

LOL No I distinctly remember the commentators saying Scholes was careless and clumsy, never dirty, well not like he'd mean to be or anything like.Puskas wrote:Clearly not the new Paul Scholes, then.Ianmooreslovechild wrote:I think Mavies is really the new Paul Scholes...[snip]...He isn't a dirty player

The key is too foul people long enough that it just becomes part of your charm. "Haha, he just went in two footed and twelve minutes late. Oh that Scholes, what a character!"

Well young Mavies is well on target there.Quite an achievenent to get 6 bookings in the game time he's had.You get the impression he's trying to put himself about in the hardworking ethos of the team but he's just not very good at making challenges. He'd better get some cheeky innocent grin lessons off SKD

I like Mark Davies, and think he's a good prospect (still), but am not convinced that he'll ever be first choice. Better him than Cohen as first reserve though.

That used to work pretty well for me in't Sunday League.H. Pedersen wrote:The key is too foul people long enough that it just becomes part of your charm. "Haha, he just went in two footed and twelve minutes late. Oh that Scholes, what a character!"
1) Friendly word with Ref prior to kick-off about the random party the night before and not getting to bed until 05:00 this morning
2) Point out that "there's got to be more to life than chasing their "really nippy buggers of wingers" on a Sunday morning
3) If necessary, play the "not getting any younger" card
4) Crunch the bastards about neck height first tackle
5) Await the stern talking too, whilst apologising profusely about cobwebs still being in head

Sunday League in Horwich in my youth was unusual in that it kicked off AFTER 2pm, thus after the pubs closed, not prior to them opening.
It made the event altogether more scary.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
