Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
Tyler Smith would be interesting, as he's not necessarily the type I thought would arrive after Evatt's comments about signing players who physically look more like Premier League players.
He can run in behind a bit, use both feet, get at a defender, etc; but he's less physical than Charles and certainly doesn't look like the Vik, Nlundulu "brick wall who can still run" sort.
I'm really interested to see what type of player Evatt means when he says the money will enable him to sign players who can play his sort of football.

Yeah mate. A good spot. I still think Evatt has 3/4 strikers and probably one free slot up front. I'm sure if "the deal too good to refuse" came along then he'd go for it and I think he'll add one, I'd probably be a little surprised if it was this one...

Luton proving what can be done on minimal resources.
Brilliant stuff.
9 years from non-league to Prem.
To win that despite having Lockyer collapse on the pitch. Amazing.

Rare occasion where a penalty shoot out produces the deserving winners. How Luton didn’t win that three times over in normal time is beyond me. Coventry were rubbish.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 7:58 pmLuton proving what can be done on minimal resources.

Amazing Luton story but the thing is they aren’t trying to outfootball anyone. It is I think easier to do what they do on limited resources than what Evatt wants to do. As Coventry demonstrated today…

Na. Coventry have been a basket case off the pitch and were promoted a season after. What it actually shows is that you can play that way and win against all odds.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 9:25 pmRare occasion where a penalty shoot out produces the deserving winners. Today was reminiscent of us against Watford. Coventry wanted to play but Luton were just too good at stopping them. Same with us against Barnsley.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 9:56 pmNa. Or Big Sams side against Preston. Ultimately I do think the more you want to play the better relative to your opponents you need to be.

Oh, if that's what you mean I 100% agree. I just think the style of football Evatt is working to produce here makes teams better relative to opponents. Especially in a basketcase league like the Championship where teams tend to be all over the show in terms of coaching consistency.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 11:13 pmUltimately I do think the more you want to play the better relative to your opponents you need to be.
You have to have the right coaches and the right core of players, but when this kind of technical coaching gets going the results speak for themselves at all levels.
I don't really think it's as much about budget as it is about time (money obviously really, really helps). What Evatt wants to do takes more time than (for example) what Dyche does. In the short term it's harder to get points, but over time it overtakes more simplified coaching and has a much higher ceiling (to use one of those football buzzwords that isn't really a buzzword).
Evatt's had three seasons here now and we're seeing returns. The first two seasons were rescued by January recruitment, but this last one I think we'd all say wasn't and we got the play-offs and a cup.
With the players we have retained (or hope to) I think we now have that core that's both good enough to compete and can transmit club identity to the next lot of recruits (who are hopefully a level above in terms of talent).
I've said before that football is about a balance between time and money. Next season we'll be at the point where Evatt has had the time to get a settled squad, impose his ideas etc...we may also have some more money to improve the raw quality a bit more quickly.
I'll reserve judgement a bit until I see who we get in, but my feeling generally is that we *should* be able to put together a squad that will go up and then form the nucleus of a Championship squad that can do something at that level.
Previously I thought we'd be able to go up, but we'd probably rely on more short term fixes to some issues and we'd have to do more of a rebuild right away in the Championship. I'm certain of nothing right now, but I'm hopeful the lads we add this window can be of a level to impress a league up.

Nixon seems to be suggesting that Sheehan has contract offers from ourselves and Exeter.
I’d like to see him back, but he’s not one to break the bank for.

Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
This. Given we are reported to have a bigger budget I think it wouldn’t be disastrous if he moved on.
He’s definitely not going to be a championship player and I think is too physically limited.
Need a more imposing option for me if it’s possible.
If he stays then I don’t think it’s disastrous either.
Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
If Exeter are offering better wages/additional years then he probably goes. He’d be a starter there, they’re a good club that will likely be at least mid table, and it’s a bit closer to where he comes from.

Yup. We've offered what we think he's worth to us. So stick. In what became our starting three of Demps, Morley and Sheehan, they all feel like "not a lot between them" in terms of game impact...and I think most would like the MF to improve some...

If Luton still smells of Kioso the kid needs a bath. He's been at Rotherham for a year.

Re: Snog, Marry, Avoid: Summer 2023 Transfer Window
Kioso is the type of Championship player we might be able to target.
When you look at what Wigan were paying players to try and stay up (20k a week to Nyambe, over £1m on fees and wages to loan Sinani for 6 months, etc) you can see what established Championship players get paid. They were already massively outspending us before they went up, because their model was based on experienced lads on good money.
Lads who have gone up to that level and flopped are probably affordable. That's Randell Williams sort of territory.
Last season I was hoping Dom Ball might be short on offers and become affordable for us. He ended up on 15k a week at Ipswich.
If our increased budget goes on higher wages for Championship players you risk having a squad of haves and have nots. You're also probably tied into expensive contracts for longer than that glut of cash will last.
I doubt we're looking to break the wage structure. If we are, we need a rethink.
