He's gone batshit mental and three at the back it seems. 4-5-1, two out and out wingers. Move it quickly. Win. Or KD, 4-4-2 up the middle lose.

No thanks. It costs me too much to replace the controllers that I end up smashing into smithereens in frustration.

see here's the problem.
if Afobe isnt fit and NGog not to be risked/not ready.
and Sordell/Davies not suited to playing as lone striker- where are the goals going to come from if we DON'T play 4-4-2?

are we good enough defensively to spozz a 0-0 by playing 5 in midfield?
do we want to?

push eagles/petrov/LCY further up

use three compact centre midfielders who can alternate jobs.

go three at the back :fishing:

play Mark Davies 'in the hole' or sutin, idk.

I feel we've had this conversation before.

Bogdan/Lonergan

Riley Ream Knight Ricketts Alonso

CYL Andrews Eagles
Petrov K Davies

get the full backs forward.

eagles/chung/petrov/mavies/k davies and hopefully sordell all well capable of goals. as is keith andrews if you look at last years tally for ipswich.

the big issue we have with going 3 in the middle/2 sitting midfielders and 1 further forward is who partners andrews in the centre? because at the moment we have erm nobody.

to think last year we had reo-coker, muamba and potentially holden if he hadn't broke down again to pick from. we'd do a lot better with just 1 of those 3 healthy and playing for us.

Hence playing three there rather than two: strength in numbers. To a certain extent it doesn't matter if it's the old Allardyce model of one sitting behind the other two (as we did at Crawley, with Andrews deeper when Vela hobbled off) or the more widespread current fashion for one pushed further forward behind the striker; indeed, it's not very difficult to switch between those two within seconds if you've got any tactical flexibili...oh.

I'm much happier with Andrews + MDavies + Eagles in the middle than just Andrews + MDavies. Pratley would be an energetic alternative to Eagles, but at the sharp end he looks horribly short on confidence. (I'd say ability, but I'm not in a joking mood.) At Crawley there were a few half-chances falling to him which you could see him momentarily eye up then decline. Still, he'll run around, if that's what we need. We could start with him alongside KA & MD, with CYL & Eagles wide, then consider bringing on Petrov for Pratley and pushing Eagles infield. We have options. I'd love to see us use them wisely.

OC's had his pre-match press conference. Quotes from the official site:
Josh Vela came off within four minutes against Crawley so he will be assessed further today (Thursday), in terms of a scan. We looked at it initially yesterday but we had to wait until it settled down a bit. We will know more later today – hopefully it’s not long-term but he is certainly ruled out for Saturday.

David Ngog managed to play 45 minutes in the reserves on Monday, which was good. Hopefully he will continue to train with us over Thursday and Friday and gradually get closer to where he needs to be. Young Benik Afobe came off with a knock on Tuesday and we are hopeful that he will be okay.

We made seven or eight chances in midweek, but when you lose a game you want to go out and win the next one. What we have to do is make sure that we continue the level of performance that we have shown in the previous Championship matches against Derby County and Nottingham Forest. It should have resulted in six points as opposed to four, but they were certainly two far better performances than the first one at Burnley.

You have to be consistent in this league. We know we are capable of scoring goals but what we have to do is make sure that we are not giving away easy goals. That might sound daft given the quality of Nottingham Forest’s finishes, but within every goal there are avoidable moments. We will score goals but we also have to keep the backdoor shut. If you do that, it’s a great remedy for winning matches.

Right - I think he's got it , we score goals and stop them scoring which means we win.

See you lot , saying he didn't know what he's doing. Football genius.

I hadn't thought of this! Afobe doubtful, N'Gogers still not back, all we need now is for one of SKD or Sordell to get a knock and he'll have no bloody choice!

Having lost total faith in Coyle, and it took me until this season, whatever he does, I'll take some convincing now.

If we start 4-4-2 I'll continue to believe he's deluded and not seeing what we're all seeing.

If we start 4-5-1, I'll see it as an admission he was clueless all along and it's taken him too long to realise it.

Still, I'm sorry not to be going.

3-1 win for us
This is how I'm probably feeling right about now. I really wish no ill of Coyle, none whatsoever. Plus from the other thread I'm not really sure I would want any of the other managers mentioned. Suntan (P5 W3 D2 L0)has a good record for us but has he been tainted by failure else where?
 I'd wish a 44 ton Artic on him!! the guys a knob a first class knob.
Wake up smell the coffeeCoyle is a nobody who is ruining the club we all support and love, soon Coyle and hopefully that other prick Nixon will never be mentioned again on this board unless its a thread on Boltons worst ever manager and hanger on crops up.

So he's got Spearing and I believe 7 more games to make it work now he has what he says he needed. We will regret not signing a left back.Alonso isnt and Ricketts should be aongside Knight but heyho thats too bleeding obvious for a football man like coyle to recognise.
Anyway I would hope to see this on Saturday.....

Bogdan
Riley Ream Knight Ricketts
CYL Spearing Andrews Petrov
Eagles
KD

However I expect Mears and possibly Mills will be in and Sordell ahead of Petrov or Eagles if he must be rigidly stupid.

The good news is that potentially that line up looks capable. Andrews would be able to get forward a bit more with Spearing holding and Eagles/Petrov/CYL are full of potential and in reasonable form.Had we signed a left back and had Ricketts alongside Knight I might even believe thats a promotion 11 but as it is coyle is going to live up to his promise of entertaining free scoring games which could go either way instead of making a small tweak to ensure we're solid enough to dominate and win.Perhaps admitting Alonso,Mills and Ream arent good enough so soon after signing them would have been too big an ask.I guess there's still hope for Ream and the responsibility may bring the best out of Knight.

Course if he plays Mills and Knight then we will need to defend deep which could still work by default creating space for the likes of Petrov/Eagles/CYL to break into.

And being coyle he may pick Mavis again and leave Spearing on the bench which would be really stupid and frustrating and totally true to form.
