Not really. Boris's tip cost me a fiver.

Back when the short-list of Solskjaer/Appleton/Freedman was leaked I managed to find some decent odds and backed all three.

£2 @ 25/1. It'll pay for my Blackpool trip.

What you really mean there is that me & the Hoss'll be paying for your Blackpool trip. (by the way, there's no trains. Government cuts).

Yeah, but the government are selling it to you as investment not cuts. I hear Coyle is going to be the new Press Secretary...

Nevermind wrote:I'm not trying to wind anyone up and it's not sour grapes before anybody starts (to be fair your forum seems to have nicer people on than the Palace one!) but this is a very odd appointment. 8 games ago there was all sorts of speculation that Freedman was about to get the sack. We played awful, uninspiring football for 6 months after beating Man Utd in the League Cup, which continued at the start of this season. We didn't concede many, but especially with this seasons defensive fraility it seems that was more to do with Tony Popovic organising the defence and having Nathaniel Clyne and Anthony Gardner, as all organisation fell away after the 3 of them left. We've played more attractive football this year, but that's more to do with Zaha being in such good form and the new signings (Bolasie and Moritz) hitting the ground running, literally. Maybe Freedman had hit on a good formula and he would have maintained a promotion push, but based on the past couple of years he just doesn't seem like a very good manager. Utterly defensive when winning - score a goal then put everybody behind the ball and hope to cling on is his standard tactic. Maybe he will prove me wrong at Bolton, but I just can't see him putting him transforming a a side, especially if there are strong characters in it. I really can't see why he left now, and I am not belittling Bolton, just it doesn't seem like the right move for football reasons. He had the fans support, which in all honesty is the only thing that stopped him being sacked at any point between about March and September, and was given time when others wouldn't have been. Sure we're on a good run and he won Manager of the Month, but surely nobody looks at anybody's perfomance for 8 games, because other than that he hasn't set the world alight. He's brought his players in, and to be fair hasn't done a bad job of finding players with limited money, although some of his transfer decisions have been a bit strange...and god forbid any of his targets are slightly unfit or can't play in 3 positions or he won't look at the twice (not necessarily a bad thing). I can only assume the rumours were true that CPFC2010 were not going to discuss renewing his contract until after Christmas as they weren't convinced about him - after all it's only 6 weeks ago that we were the laughing stock of the league and everyone was convinced we would be relegated - we really were that bad, and had been for months. I guess he took the safety of a contract with Bolton than risk being on the dole next summer, and not being in demans when this purple patch ends. Best of luck for the season, but I really fear for Freedman, I really do.
Perhaps this post should be preserved for historical reference? Y'know, in case things go tits up.

If he learns/adapts quicker than Coyle he's an immediate improvement, though we'll always wonder how Jimmy would have got on...

Why isn't there a poll option which says "meh" ?
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I guess it will depend on whether he's like LSL or not. :-)

Ecstatic....
My only concern is how Freedman has suddenly become crap since he decided to jump ship. He was ace before apparently.

I think it's hard to tell when a manager is at a pretty average club. He doesn't have a great record but...would anyone with this Palace side? I don't know. He had a good cup run last year and has done alright this year but it's definitely not a sign of brilliance. I think his record shows he's, at the very least, a solid manager. It's hard to evaluate him properly though because he's so inexperienced and the experience he does have, is at an average club.

Mehish. I was more amused by the palace fans switching from the world will end without him to we just dont need him cos he's crap. Typical lover spurned stuff.

Anyway mehish, there seems plenty to like about Freedman so Im going with the good as any other options. The whole "who s next?" thread is an excercise in Mehness, the greatest parade of meh ever assembled together in one thread.Talk about shades of grey!I'm just hoping Freedman is simply meh as opposed to mmmehhhhh or merdddddddd. He might even be quite good if he can put what he says into practice but then aint that always the way.

well - not really... a few weeks ago they were calling for his head on a plate... maybe they are just as bipolar as all other football fans!

Course they are. I loved the way after 18 months of crap people suddenly decided we were a promotion team after beating sheff wed away then we lost the next and the pitchforks were back out.

We have to realise that if Freedman had shown outstanding ability before now he certainly wouldn't have signed for Bolton. Much bigger clubs would be looking at him not a bottom half Championship team. If we want the best managers we have to take a risk with an upcoming young'un knowning that some will likely fail but others may be a success.

Our best hope is for him to get us into the Premiership when in all reality he will be snapped up by one of the money rich clubs.
Do not trust atoms. They make up everything.

Barring any massive disasters or abysmal start with players protesting Sammy Lee style, then he's got two years as I said, before we can start really assessing him.

Not his squad or backroom setup (yet) and he can only do so much initially.

I hope and expect he can get an upturn in results this season, but like I say I want to see how he wants to build it and his vision over a longer period.

Think we all made the mistake of thinking Coyle was great a year into his job here........
