I'm struggling with this too, to be honest.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Coyle had been a manager for what? 5 or 6 years before he came to us? Never having to deal with a difficult spell in 5 years or so in most folks mind would mean he was a good manager. We of course know now he isn't.BWFC_Insane wrote:Not really. Coyle was a gamble because he'd not been properly tested as a manager, he'd never had to deal with "a difficult spell", people questioning him etc.Lord Kangana wrote:So you just discard evidence that doesn't support your hypothesis?
It seems a large oversight, considering you gave Coyle as prima facie evidence of a gamble, and McCarthy as a sure thing.
He had a good record before, but it was limited.
We've all seen how thats worked out.
A manager like McCarthy, its all known, how he reacts to things, how he copes under pressure, his limitations, his strengths etc.
So less of a risk, because Eddie and Phil will know pretty much what they're getting and not getting.
So what we're saying is that you have to go through a period of being shit at your job to be seen as being good at your job? Maybe we should've kept Owen after all!

100% agree. And thats the downside.thebish wrote:I kind of understand - but I am sceptical that the gritty and determined no-nonsense McCarthy will be dead chuffed by the idea of an on-trial 9-month contract to see if he can get us promoted with a view to employing someone else when he does...BWFC_Insane wrote: A manager like McCarthy, its all known, how he reacts to things, how he copes under pressure, his limitations, his strengths etc.

and if that's not the plan - I'm sceptical that Eddie D wants to give someone a 3yr contract with the knowledge that he will have to sack yet another manager next season and go through this whole shebang again..
and - if, as you say, they'd know what they were not getting - then they'd know they were not getting someone who anyone has any long-term confidence in (not even you) - and I amj sceptical that Eddie is looking for another short tenure or short-term fix - my guess is he is sick and tired of shelling out to sack failed managers...
all of that is guesswork, not FACT.
And there's the balance between the risk and reward.
However, given the increase in premiership money next year, I'm sure his first priority is to get there.
However, you're right in that he probably wants someone who will eventually be poached by someone else and we'll get big compensation rather than shelling out loads to sack someone else.
Balancing act.

Whoever comes in will need to work fast. They're starting with a 10 game penalty.

Amused to note/realise/remember that Mick Mac's Wolves were above us when he got the hoik. Nice work CJG.
Not that I necessarily want him at BWFC, mind...

I've put it back now as I got caught by a colleague laughing to myself like a simpleton in the office.

Re: Now he's gone, who's next?
He could, but unlike Sammy Lee, he has some track record of success managing teams - albeit, in the case of Redshite Rezzies probably a better quality of player than most in the Rezzies league could stretch to. He also has track record at Molde. Sammy Lee had no record at all as a Manager...BWFC_Insane wrote:He's taken two clubs similar to ourselves up into the premiership.Lord Kangana wrote:Sorry, I'm still not getting this. The last 2 seasons before this Coyle performed better than Mcarthy at a similar sized club in the same division. Why exactly is he less of a gamble than a man who he was worse than? I need to understand how that logic works.
He has therefore a track record for doing that.
We are 18th in the championship.
We need someone to take us up.
OGS could be the next Sammy Lee for all anyone knows.
With Mick you know he can achieve promotion (whether he can here is the test) with OGS you're almost taking a stab in the dark.
Not my money, so I'll let Eddie decide....

Re: Now he's gone, who's next?
Look there's far too much analysis going on here, which would be fine if we were on the interviewing panel, but we're not. Therefore I just let my prejudices flow freely, I'm comfortable with that. Like some, whose name I will not mention (but can be found giggling in the corner like a schoolgirl), I find it difficult to overcome my innate prejudice of all things ManU. I don't care about his record, he's pish. [until he gets appointed].

It was a lighthearted comment mate. If/when he comes in I'll immediately forget everything and get right behind him. The rights of hypocrisy and memory loss are a god given gift to all football fans.Barefoot Wanderer wrote:so what he played for united - what's your f*cking point! But y'know the reasons for pointing out he's a red should be obvious. Well obvious to any self-respecting Bolton fan who doesn't have a secret soft spot for Man United.

Have to say, it wouldn't feel right to me. Unless we won every game, then obviously I wouldn't care.CrazyHorse wrote:It was a lighthearted comment mate. Re: Now he's gone, who's next?
I think it's a bit disingenuous to compare Coyle and Mick's Championship records and come to the conclusion that 'Coyle has a better per season % of getting sides up'.
Coyle's Burnley finished 5th, seven points adrift of second place and four from third. It's an impressive achievement in it's own right, but the play-off's is a lottery at the best of times.
McCarthy's Sunderland and his Wolves side (both fairly recently relegated) stormed the league and won it at a canter with 90 points or more.
I don't think the two are that comparable. One required producing a side that was unquestionably the best in the division and proving it over 46 games, the other required finishing within the top six and then winning a short knock-out competition.
That's not saying Mick's the perfect candidate, nobody is, but I do think he'd be a reasonable pick. I'd be happy with him or OGS.

I might be a rare breed of Bolton fans but I like man u - they do a lot for the game - look at the England players united have produced over the years, the youth and look at how many titles they've took off the scoucers (priceless) - you only support one club i believe but I always see how man u have gone after the bolton game on and hope city have lost
what have united ever done to bolton?
Fergusson used to be pally with BSA, and always had a good word for bolton. I honestly think some bolton fans should invite a more open minded approach to man u, they're a bloody good club!
