I'd also take Cuella (wage depending) Hargreaves (Bolton father - have if we can get on a very cheap deal) & Guthrie - Cash in on Mavies and take that lad for at least a year.

Thomas won't be coming. He'll be off abroad.

owen hargreaves would do if his knees or whatever hold up.

even if they dont , he'd only be the 7th worst injured person here.

Carlos Cuellar.
Owen Hargreaves (dependant on pay obviously)
Danny Guthrie (done the promotion thing before so knows how to graft and get a team promoted, settling in should be easy he's been here before, still only 25)
Paul Scharner
Andy Johnson's worth a risk but i'd imagine he'd go to a Premiership club.

I'd also consider signing Hendry Thomas from Wigan (lives nearby, good experience).
be happy with any of them

Cuellar very rarely played in position for Villa
single handedly took Rangers to a UEFA final
easily good enough for the Championship

It's got Ricketts on the released list. Thought he'd re-signed for two years?

Has anyone mentioned Abdoulaye Faye yet?

Anyone seen a list of Bosmans outside the Prem? Not wishing to 'buy down' or anything  .but may be 1 or 2 worth a punt down there who are waiting for a big fish to come along

For what? The award to the player our current manager is least likely to sign?

Which may explain why he looked way past his best last season.

Don't want to be waiting and relying on Alan Nixons every word but he said no to Cuellar, Faye and Carew

On Ryo, looked good at first. Went downhill massively. Either (probably) one trick pony, or injured. Only glimmer of hope is that he's twigged and going 4-2-3-1. Sure when Eagles scored against Swansea his celebration was a gesture about playing in behind. Got 10+ for Burnley there when they went down.
