Agree with pretty much all of this. The exception being Rico. No guarantee that he wants to stay, of course, but I still think he has something to give.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 1:46 pmShould they stay or should they go? Here's my opinions... for today. (Two strong games may change my mind, as might two shit ones.)
JUNE 2025
Nathan Baxter - RELEASE - I like him but something's broken (43 concessions in 26 league games) and we need a new voice.
Joel Coleman - RELEASE - Thanks and farewell.
Gethin Jones - RELEASE - Very many thanks and much good luck, but it's over.
Ricardo Santos - RELEASE - Very many thanks and much good luck, except if it affects us.
Alex Murphy - END LOAN - Way too unreliable.
Jay Matete - END LOAN - Again I like him but it's not quite there and we need new types.
Kion Etete - END LOAN - A bogeyman to frighten the children.
Luke Hutchinson - KEEP - Year's extension with a Fourth Division loan.
Luke Matheson - RELEASE - 22 and on loan in tier 6. Good luck.
Max Conway *club has +1yr option - KEEP - We'll need another LB/LWB option but Max (who will be overage) should be in that fight.
JUNE 2026
Luke Southwood *club has +1yr option - KEEP - but as backup.
Will Forrester - KEEP - Breakthrough season. He turns 24 in summer - can he keep improving?
George Johnston - LISTEN TO OFFERS - Tough one this, as I think George is a likeable, flexible, hard-working type (and a lefty) - but he's 27 this year and has he improved? Would you trust him in a back four?
Josh Dacres-Cogley - KEEP - I'd take another three or four of him in the squad, please.
Jordi Osei-Tutu - KEEP - Can we keep him fit and focused? I'd like us to try.
Kyle Dempsey - KEEP - One you'd want alongside you rather than against you in a fight...
Carlos Mendes Gomes - LISTEN TO OFFERS - It's not worked out, and if (as I assume) he's on a decent wage, I think we could do better.
Victor Adeboyejo - LISTEN TO OFFERS - Any incoming Turkish phone calls should be answered.
Dan Nlundulu - LISTEN TO OFFERS - I mean.
JUNE 2027
Eoin Toal - KEEP - On his 5th injury of the season but we do look better with him in (except perhaps at LCB).
Chris Forino - KEEP - Adds post-Santos height and certainly talks the talk judging by his post-Lincoln interview. I'm not entirely convinced but I think he deserves a chance.
Josh Sheehan - KEEP - Although if Cardiff get relegated and want to build round him... if he stays, he really really needs a Bastard 6 alongside him.
George Thomason - KEEP - Rarely lacks effort, often shows promise, leftiness adds an option. Keep - but maybe not as captain.
Aaron Morley - KEEP - One of few players to improve this year, he shows us a post-Sheehan possibility.
Szabolcs Schön *club has +1yr option - KEEP - although I wouldn't be against selling him at the right price, especially if he keeps making the wrong decisions so frequently. Interesting that Schuey doesn't see him as a LWB...
Aaron Collins - KEEP - 19 goals. One of the EFL's most regular goal/assist providers for the last three or four years. But he cannot be our only option.
Klaidi Lolos - LISTEN TO OFFERS - Willing but limited. Loan to the fourth tier and sell in Jan.
John McAtee - LISTEN TO OFFERS - I don't know what he is. Looking angry isn't enough.
JUNE 2028
Joel Randall - LISTEN TO OFFERS - The avatar of a failure, and not just his. It would take some turnaround to stop him being seen as the Evatt exemplar.
Who's that leave me with?
GK: Southwood, Hutchinson
RB/RWB: Dacres-Cogley
CB: Forrester, Toal, Forino
LB/LWB: Conway
CM: Dempsey, Sheehan, Thomason, Morley
FORWARDS: Collins, Osei-Tutu, Schön
That's 12 overage outfielders I'd keep (barring £££ offers), with 7 others (Johnston, Mendes Gomes, Lolos, Randall, McAtee, Adeboyejo, Nlundulu) I'd be seeking to shunt. It'd be difficult to get rid of all 7 of those so they may be added back into the pile, with varying degrees of distaste – depends how much they showed they wanted to stay... – but there's a big list of must-haves:
• goalkeeper
• Bastard 6 (organiser)
• A fullback/wingback on each side as competition or upgrade
• Wide attackers
• No.9
I'd not be distraught to see a centre-back upgrade - but I don't think it's the weakest department in terms of individual players. It needs coaching, organisation and determination.
Re: Schu me the way to Amarillo - Summer 2025 Transfer Thread
I've listed them below. I've gone away from contract length, and instead listing them in order of how much I want them to stay. The further down the list, the more I want rid. I've also put in a couple of sub-headings - the first lot are the ones I actively want to see stay, the second I'm not open to going but think can be part of something, the last lot can get in the bin. That middle group, I like the ones up the list more than those down it. Obviously for those not OOC we're dependent on others, but this is where I am.
Off the top of my head I like more of the defenders, but I think that's because they tend to be triers. But while defending is a team game, the number of goals we've conceded in criminal, and I really think we need major surgery at the back.
I also tried to guard against recency bias. This lot have been worse than than last year's side under two managers, I really think we got the balance wrong last year, so more credit to the players who proved last year they could get within 90 minutes of the Champo than those who this year have proved to be miles off. That's tempered a little bit by naturally taking time to settle and joining a shit-show. One manager who was clueless this year, and other trying to make the best of a bag of bits.
Have also tried to factor in injury-proneness.
But also that signings are always a risk "50% fail" etc and while we all understandably want to rip it up, we need to keep the baby and lose the bathwater.
Definitely keep
Morley - build the team around him. Still young, got a bit of everything, big part of Wycombe's challenge, and played well for us since coming back.
Collins - Constantly scores goals whilst playing a role that doesn't really suit him. We absolutely need physicality through the team, but he has a huge amount of quality.
Southwood - not getting a better #2.
Toal - The only defender likely to be here I fully trust. Quick, good in the air, loves defending. Question marks over injuries for me, but still worth his place.
Dacres-Cogley - Sometimes makes me want to claw my eyes out, but v reliable, v robust, always at least 6.5/10. Think him as cover for JOT would be ideal.
Conway - Want to see young players coming through, done v well in L2 - cheap, provides cover.
Hutchinson - keep but loan.
Can go or stay
Baxter - Would like to see him stay but depends how much value for money he brings. SS was blessed with Cooper at Plymouth, not sure he's ever needed to recruit a #1 (and the last guy's record was questionable). Would be happy with Bax staying but money might be better spent elsewhere. Had a shocker the other day but has rarely let us down.
Dempsey - Like him a lot, and played a big role in previous success. Right temperament. Injuries the only question for me.
Osei-Tutu - Similar to Bax - very good player but not sure he's worth the money. Is NOT a winger. Should be first choice RB/RWB for me, with JDC as capable cover.
Santos - Tough to know where to put him. I think he'd thrive under SS but sounds like he's off. Wish him well.
Thomason - Lots of question marks. But has the right attitude on the pitch - the only one to come out of Saturday with any credit.
Sheehan - many things to many people. I think he's a fabulous player, but you need to get the balance of midfield right next to him. Not sure Morley or Thomason can provide that, so if you need another bastard alongside him, plus one of them, is that a bit one-paced. Think you can accommodate him, but equally think it's fair if the manager wants more rounded midfielders and imagine he'd have takers.
Forino - Not convinced he's good enough, but I do think he has the right attitude and loves defending. It's whether he's good enough at it.
Adeboyejo - Not my favourite, would sell if there's a good offer. Gets credit for being a big part of more successful sides. Injuries also a concern.
McAtee - I think there's a player in there, but I don't know what. Flattered to deceive and not lived up to the fee. Imagine he's on a fair wedge to not be guaranteed to start.
Randall - another it's tough to know where to place. He's shown absolutely nothing so far. Worrying rumours (though that's it) about his attitude. He's walked into a madhouse, and I can't see us recouping anywhere near our money now. Needs to be part of the squad next year and hopefully can show the quality we thought we'd identified.
Schon - not been impressed, but gets mitigation for moving to a new country and into a basket case. Don't know what he is. And taking up an ESC place. Would like to lose, but not against staying.
Murphy - Tough to come into and hasn't shone. Wouldn't be devastated if he came back, as he's flexible, but wouldn't be thrilled either.
Johnston - I like him, but like Forrester I think he determines you have to play a back 3. At least one needs to go this summer for me. Also played a lot of games in a team that has conceded a criminal number of goals. Thanks but time to move on for me, especially while he's fit.
Forrester - like Johnston. Some to like, but can't play in a 4. Also an injury risk. Will have a league career, but I'd be looking to move on.
Coleman - depends on his money but assuming he's on peanuts no issue with him staying, especially given Southwood tends to miss FLT games with NI.
Definitely go
Mendes Gomes - bizarre signing, never played a way that suits him, and he's made of glass. Presumably on good wedge too. Bad bad signing.
Nlundulu - christ. Get rid.
Jones - Thanks for the memories Geth. This was always his limit, and time has caught up.
Lolos - Hate him. Lazy, shirking, everything that's wrong with modern football. Occasionally has a nice touch only to go backwards immediately.
Matete - another one I despise. Occasional flashes but lazy and inconsistent. Has an aggravating habit of committing people, bouncing a ball into the edge of the box for a 1-2 and then running past the interception and then ambling back doing a dad run as they bomb forward into the space he's just left. Get rid.
Matheson - Never ever up to it.
Etete - Christ, maybe Dan isn't that bad after all.

Cheers. I voted.
Possibly. I half-wondered if Evatt had rolled a grenade on his way out, but we've absolutely no evidence for that.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 2:23 pmI’m beginning to wonder if Schumacher was asked for an appraisal of his squad by the board or Sharon and did so and the result of that is why Markham was turfed? It’s the oddest thing that he was central to recruiting a new manager then shown the door a week or later. Did Schumacher offer up the fact that the January business was no good?
Maybe Sharon figured Markham was better-placed than her to judge the "football" side of potential gaffers, and then she stepped up to judge the "person" side of his shortlist. Ilesy says we only really considered Schuey, Lowe and Buckingham, and there's no strong reason to disbelieve that; so while Markham's nod can't have hurt Schumacher, it's hardly like he staked his entire reputation on a wild outside bet.
It's possible Schuey told Sharon the January business was poor, but if so he was telling very different stories in public - waving through the Etete transfer and saying we had a great squad. He wouldn't be the first manager to say different things in public and private, but maybe Sharon simply came to a Worthy-style decision that in our structure it's not just the manager/headcoach who's expendable. Certainly if I'd signed £2m away on McAtee and Randall I'd be wondering.

Re: Schu me the way to Amarillo - Summer 2025 Transfer Thread
Cheers. I've said before that Rico has all the attributes to be a brilliant defender, especially if freed from being a Home Bargains Beckenbauer. (Imagine the post-Evatt improvement in Will Forrester applied onto Rico at his imperious best.)truewhite15 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 3:27 pmAgree with pretty much all of this. The exception being Rico. No guarantee that he wants to stay, of course, but I still think he has something to give.
However, it just feels like it's too far gone now, like he wants to leave and the fan-player bridges are burnt, and that a few Evatt-era statiues need toppling. I was also running dangerously high on centre-backs considering how regularly arse-gravy we've been at the back (and that I suspect we should be leaning more back-four than back-three).
Re: Schu me the way to Amarillo - Summer 2025 Transfer Thread
For sake of ease, I am going to re-use DSB's list, modified with my own thoughts. I would also add that realistically we should be listening to offers for all our players.
JUNE 2025
Nathan Baxter - KEEP - He has been off form this season, but previously had shown himself to be a very good keeper for the level. Unless we already have a free agent lined up who would be a significant upgrade, Baxter gets a new contract.
Joel Coleman - RELEASE - Yep.
Gethin Jones - RELEASE - It shouldn't be hard to massively upgrade on the current version of Geth.
Ricardo Santos - RELEASE - Don't think there's any chance he stays.
Alex Murphy - END LOAN - Not sure any party would want to continue this relationship.
Jay Matete - END LOAN - If he were available for free then I'd give signing him strong consideration, but not worth a transfer fee.
Kion Etete - END LOAN - Bye.
Luke Hutchinson - KEEP - Potential back-up keeper if we were looking to save wages, otherwise he goes on loan.
Luke Matheson - RELEASE - Never came close to working out for him here.
Max Conway *club has +1yr option - KEEP/SELL - Bring him in for pre-season, and if he impresses SS then he stays, otherwise we should be able to get money for him.
JUNE 2026
Luke Southwood *club has +1yr option - LISTEN TO OFFERS - I don't like him as first choice, and doubt he'd be happy to be a back-up for another season. Maybe we could get a small fee for him.
Will Forrester - KEEP - Really like him, and should be a regular if he can stay fit.
George Johnston - KEEP - Up and down season after his return from injury, but I think he should at least be a solid squad member going forwards, if not a guaranteed starter.
Josh Dacres-Cogley - KEEP - Great squad member.
Jordi Osei-Tutu - LISTEN TO OFFERS - If we can get back what we paid for him I'd sell. Obvious injury issues, but also fairly inconsistent when he's fit.
Kyle Dempsey - KEEP - I don't think we'd get much for Kyle at this stage, and he should be better with a full off-season to get back up to speed.
Carlos Mendes Gomes - KEEP - Again, if we could get a reasonable fee for him then he can go, but that seems unlikely. I think he could work well as a wide player.
Victor Adeboyejo - LISTEN TO OFFERS - Another where his stock is low, but perhaps we could still get £250k for him. Probably time to cut our losses.
Dan Nlundulu - LISTEN TO OFFERS - I assume we'd let him go for nowt if there were any suitors.
JUNE 2027
Eoin Toal - KEEP - A top defender at this level when healthy.
Chris Forino - KEEP - Ideally he'd be a back-up for me and we'd bring in a more experienced replacement for Rico.
Josh Sheehan - LISTEN TO OFFERS - One of our more saleable assets, and I'd take £750k for him, but no problem with him staying.
George Thomason - LISTEN TO OFFERS - Again, I would be fine if he stayed, but I have a nagging feeling that despite his effort levels, his technical and athletic deficiencies sometimes hold us back.
Aaron Morley - KEEP - He'd be a starter for me, next to a more experienced DM signing. If Wycombe go up and offered £1m+ for him then we'd have to take the cash, though.
Szabolcs Schön *club has +1yr option - KEEP - Only because I don't think we could recoup enough of his fee for it to be worthwhile. Hopefully he should improve with a debut season in England under his belt.
Aaron Collins - KEEP - I would be making sure he's hitting the gym hard when he's on his hols in Marbella, but he's one who should do better with the right players alongside him.
Klaidi Lolos - LISTEN TO OFFERS - Crawley fans absolutely love him, so if they stay up I think there's a non-zero chance that he goes back there.
John McAtee - LISTEN TO OFFERS - Statistically he actually didn't have too bad a season, so his stock is probably not as low as some others. I don't absolutely hate him, but I think it's an either/or with him and Collins. Maybe we could find someone willing to pay £500k for him.
JUNE 2028
Joel Randall - KEEP - I just can't see a sale for a huge loss being something the club would swallow, so he stays and is told in no uncertain terms where he needs to improve. Getting on the protein shakes would be a good starting point.

Re: Schu me the way to Amarillo - Summer 2025 Transfer Thread
@Pru - won't quote-text but a fascinating, thoughtful read, cheers. You and I differ in some parts but agree in many. I do agree (though I didn't say) that Forrester is better in a three than a four.
What's really saddening is how many of the lads on your Get Shut list are relatively recent acquisitions. It does feel like the Evatt/Markham hivemind jumped the shark in, I'm going to say, summer 2023. Not that everyone before was golden and everyone after shite - but the returns on (increasing) investment have plummeted to such an extent that it almost feels nice to peruse the free agent lists again.

Re: Schu me the way to Amarillo - Summer 2025 Transfer Thread
Had a quick nosey at Derby players with lapsing contracts who might vaguely be of interest. Kane Wilson is also lapsing but expected to stay in the second tier even if Derby don't - with two games left, they're only above the dots on GD.
JEFF HENDRICK (33) - Coming to the end of a short-term Derby contract, the Irish midfielder might add a touch of nous. Not so much a sitting 6 as a hard-working play-anywhere type. 409 games in the top two tiers, but hasn't played much over the last two seasons - maybe give him a trial, Sexy Kieran-style?
TOM BARKHUIZEN (32 in July) - Was linked with us before joining Derby in summer 2022. He helped them up but has drifted from the first team and an extension looks unlikely. Could the either-side winger return to Lancashire?
MARCUS HARNESS (29) - Helped Ipswich to back-to-back promotions and played a couple of early Premier League games before moving to Derby on loan. Ipswich have an extension option and will be back in the second tier, but have they moved on from him?
JERRY YATES (28) - Promoted from this division with Rotherham in 2018 and Blackpool in 2021 (with 20 goals), he was signed for Swansea by Michael Duff (remember him?) in summer 2023. Scored 8 in 43 second-tier games in his first season but this term was loaned out to Derby (9 in 38 so far). Still has a season on his Swansea contract but could be borrowable - but would he prefer (and secure) a second-tier destination?

Re: Schu me the way to Amarillo - Summer 2025 Transfer Thread
Schumacher particularly mentioned needing a wide man and Barkhuizen is a good shout. Danny Ward's out of contract at Huddersfield but hasn't featured much this season and we've enough broken or fragile personnel to think about adding to them.
If the Juke is too old how about Michael Smith at Wednesday? Out of contract and still a spritely 33. He could be the experienced target man we need?

Wrexham only have 87 strikers, they probably need a couple more.Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 6:28 pmSchumacher particularly mentioned needing a wide man and Barkhuizen is a good shout. Re: Schu me the way to Amarillo - Summer 2025 Transfer Thread
JUNE 2025
Nathan Baxter - KEEP – Not a good season, but we know he’s a good keeper.
Joel Coleman - RELEASE –
Gethin Jones - RELEASE – Thanks for some good memories, but times up
Ricardo Santos - RELEASE – He doesn’t want to be here
Alex Murphy - END LOAN – Not ready for L1 promotion hopefuls.
Jay Matete - END LOAN – Gives the ball away too much
Kion Etete - END LOAN -
Luke Hutchinson - KEEP - 3rd keeper/loan out
Luke Matheson - RELEASE – Never looked like making it
Max Conway *club has +1yr option - Keep. Like to see him given a chance after a good season in L2
JUNE 2026
Luke Southwood *club has +1yr option - KEEP – Fine as occasional back up
Will Forrester - KEEP – Shown some promise.
George Johnston - UNDECIDED – If we are still playing a 3 then worth keeping as long as we find some serious competition for him. If we’re largely playing a 2 then might be time to part ways.
Josh Dacres-Cogley - KEEP – We need more consistent 7/10s.
Jordi Osei-Tutu - LISTEN TO OFFERS – Doesn’t offer any consistency. He’s either 5 or 8, but too often 5..
Kyle Dempsey - KEEP - I think he lacks consistency and injuries are a concern. That said, he’s one of the few you can rely on to get stuck in when the going gets a little tough.
Carlos Mendes Gomes - LISTEN TO OFFERS – Maybe harsh as he’s largely been injured. What I have seen hasn’t been impressive and he doesn’t strike as an in the trenches kinda guy.
Victor Adeboyejo - LISTEN TO OFFERS – I like the fella, but we need someone the ball doesn’t run away from
Dan Nlundulu - ACCEPT ANY OFFERS
JUNE 2027
Eoin Toal - KEEP – one of the more consistent.
Chris Forino - KEEP – I’m undecided on him, but he at least appears to have a bit of fight in him.
Josh Sheehan - LISTEN TO OFFERS – He needs a monster alongside him. I’d rather we find someone to compliment the new and improved Morley. Morley has more headroom for improvement. Maybe Huddersfield have £750k going spare?
George Thomason - LISTEN TO OFFERS – I think he’s going to be a L1 journeyman. Like the fella, but I don’t think he’s good enough for where we want to be.
Aaron Morley - KEEP – I’ve been a critic but hold my hands up. Whatever Wycombe did to him worked.
Szabolcs Schön *club has +1yr option - KEEP – Dunno if Schuey can figure out what to do with him but let’s see.
Aaron Collins - UNDECIDED – I think he’s symptomatic of the fair-weather nature of the team. Hard to ignore his goals and ability to pull something out of the bag. But he spends a lot of time on the pitch offering feck all. Is he a luxury we can afford?
Klaidi Lolos - LISTEN TO OFFERS – At best he’s bottom end of L1.
John McAtee - LISTEN TO OFFERS – A huge disappointment. I think he’s suffered having to play as a 9 which doesn’t suit him. There is a player in there, but can Schuey find it?
JUNE 2028
Joel Randall - KEEP – A bad start, but circumstances haven’t helped. I’m hoping Schuey can bring in a proper 9 and wingers with some pace for him to play with. He could come good yet, but for goodness sake someone show him how to tackle or at least be a nuisance.

I'm at the point where i'm thinking Coleman has had a better season than Etete.

I can't see the logic in keeping Baxter. He's one of the few players out of contract and probably one of the bigger earners. He's been too poor this season to warrant a pay rise and I can't imagine his agent will be negotiating a pay cut on a new contract, so let it run down and look for a cheaper replacement.

Gotta say, I'm a bit bemused at how many defenders we seem to want to keep.
Re: Schu me the way to Amarillo - Summer 2025 Transfer Thread
It's strange in a way, on one hand I look at them individually and they don't seem that bad but then every one of them has a flaw that I don't think you can make up for. Forino works hard he's an okay defender but he's got too many mistakes in him even at this level. Johnston is a good tackler but he's very poor in the air, too poor for league 1 football frankly. Forester just doesn't strike me as that good, tbh, it's hard to put my finger on but he's not aggressive enough, seems too soft for a CB. Toal is probably the best IMO but so injury prone.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 11:38 pmGotta say, I'm a bit bemused at how many defenders we seem to want to keep.
Sometimes if a player has a bad attribute you can make it work but I don't think there's anything you can do with CBs who make mistakes or are crap in the air they're just fatal flaws that no amount of quality or compensating will ever make up for.
I dunno it's late and I can't sleep so typed this crap out

He seems very keen to stay ("I absolutely love it here" https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/2 ... statement/). Perhaps there's a compromise to be struck on his wages?

I'm genuinely shocked that anyone could think Forrester is soft and lacking in aggression. If anything, I'd say his aggression and passion for defending are his biggest attributes!Spartan2 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 23, 2025 3:47 amIt's strange in a way, on one hand I look at them individually and they don't seem that bad but then every one of them has a flaw that I don't think you can make up for. Re: Schu me the way to Amarillo - Summer 2025 Transfer Thread
There's some of that, for sure. Who am I more likely to see celebrating a title win: Forino or N'lundulu?Abdoulaye's Twin wrote: ↑Wed Apr 23, 2025 8:44 amI doubt we can shift them all, so pragmatism and all that...keep the least shiteWorthy4England wrote: ↑Tue Apr 22, 2025 11:38 pmGotta say, I'm a bit bemused at how many defenders we seem to want to keep.
Maybe it's because defending is more of a team thing, attacking often more individualistic, that so many of us seem to think "He'll be alright with a bit of coaching and a wise head in the team."
Whatever it is, it's not just one or two gobshites like me. Looking at the votes, Toal and Forino are in 2nd and 3rd behind the reborn Morley, with Forrester (and Cogz and JOT) next - level with the 19-goal top scorer. The second-top scorer is second-bottom...
@Worthy – Who would you keep?
