Liking everything in sight isn't the same as having an open mind. Nor is not liking something a symptom of a closed mind.Barefoot Wanderer wrote:open mind, I know strange isn't it?Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Hang about! Aren't you the personage that likes Man U too? your dislike of Man U is based on hate/prejudice I would wager - if I'm right then that is a closed mindLost Leopard Spot wrote:Liking everything in sight isn't the same as having an open mind. it's the man u thing again - depends how you are brought up I suppose. My mum took me to games from '74 onwards and rarely said anything negative about united, which was different to how other fans were brought up (memory recalls we were in same division round about then, div 2) but some fans love to hate them, I hate city, which is ingrained in the same way you hate united - but City are a horrible club, more so now they've got oil-moneyLost Leopard Spot wrote:My dislike of Man U is based on dislike of Man U.

In what way are City a horrible club, and United not? I know both United fans and City fans, and United fans are filled with arrogance and the oft-mentioned Big Club Mentality, whereas most City fans are rather humble, recognising where they have come from.

There's plenty wrong with him. Unspectacular managerial record, poor personality, long time out of the game, and I just don't like him. We can definitely do better.Barefoot Wanderer wrote:and (coming back to the point) what's wrong with Souness?

Mick 'Mick' McCarthy. But apparently he's not interested either (as he's probably after the Oirish job). . I admit when it comes to Souness I've not just got a closed mind, it's bolted, locked and superglued shut. And to be perfectly frank all I've got to do is see his ugly mug and I want to do a Baumgartner on him without a parachute. But for my other prejudices you'll need to see the 'anybody but him' thread.Barefoot Wanderer wrote:and (coming back to the point) what's wrong with Souness?

To be fair there isn't a candidate we can appoint who will not come under that banner.Beefheart wrote:There's plenty wrong with him. And I'm guessing, Souness will probably (albeit historically) have the "best" record of any manager we are likely to appoint.
I think the other points are more pertinent. Though I'd argue his ability to fall out with people is the issue rather than "poor personality" which I'm not entirely sure means owt in itself.
In a strange way after the initial "oh god no" I'm sort of, slightly, coming round to the idea.
Souness is a big personality and won't take shit. He'll also have some knowledge and much needed experience to add to the table.
In some ways, its win win because he'll be cheap (in terms of not having hangers on coming with him) and also easier to get rid of if it doesn't work out.
Freedman would be risky, just like Coyle was, and probably even less "proven" in some ways. Mccarthy would still be my choice, but if not......

Sammy Lee would be his assistant and they've worked together before. I think his break from management might be a good thing, time to reflect on his mistakes and do better this time. I too am like you Insane (that as well) and the more I think about it the more I like the idea, would do better than McCarthy, Keane, Appleton, Freedman, or whoever else from the names which have been brandedBWFC_Insane wrote:To be fair there isn't a candidate we can appoint who will not come under that banner.Beefheart wrote:There's plenty wrong with him. Souness till the end of the season, gets another year if he takes us up......he has shown the ability to keep sides up.........
Would be cheaper for Eddie than wrestling with Palace for a "risky" young manager.

Anyway, where does Souness fit in the poll? T'would seem he's either Someone from Abroad (which to be fair Glasgow isn't) or AN Other (not that I'm voting for him I hasten to add). If he is appointed, less than 6% of us deem him to be the Messiah of Bolton.

there is nothing humble about city fans (are you on medication?) all city fans do is moan and moan no matter what situation unfolds for them. If you listen to gmr every week for best part of 40 years you soon get an understanding of city fans who have always considered themselves as a giant in football (even when they were in tier 3) and by some freak stroke of luck got someone to buy their pathetic club.truewhite15 wrote:And is that an open mind? Because of the money now behind city they have all but scrapped their youth program, selecting to buy galactico's instead, which has an effect on what future england players may come up in the future, or may not with this kind of rich-power thinking
how many man u players come through their youth policy? a lot, and go on to play for england? Even though city have england players at present this will not be the case in years to come because they don't need to work on the youth - they've got Saudi money instead. Now all you hear everyweek are city fans moaning cause their season hasn't started well and how can they win the champions league when they are in such a hard group - humble my sweaty arm-pits!
United, even though are a rich club still bring young players on to the big stage consistently as well as buying big, trouble is with city is that they are in a rush - they'll flop as soon as their investors get bored and jump ship
United have every right to be arrogant, they are the most envied, prestegious club in the world (der!)

Certainly interesting. I certainly like Freedman based on what he seems to have achieved at palace on a low budget. I remember him being interviewed after an exceptional losing performance against cardiff and he comes across as intelligent well organised and able to generate an excellent team spirit. There seems to be more substance to the man and his thinking than there was with coyle. Still a gamble as said but more likely to mould something that may last than knock something temporarily into shape.
I can see the arguement for souness though I've never been a fan and it's a little surprising that he has come into the running. McCarthy, well who can say,he has got teams up.It may be a gamble taking freedman and it may cost a little more but if they have looked properly into how the man works then the little extra cost may be very worthwhile. In comparison to players dont managers come cheap?

My post was a comment on the City and United fans that I know. In general, I find it easier to associate with City fans than United fans, who, in my opinion, are arrogant and filled with a sense of self-entitlement just because they support United. They have no concept of supporting a team who doesn't win trophies every season. They have "fans" around the world who have never been to see them, who know very little about them, who "support" them simply because of their achievements.
And, to be honest, I couldn't give a shit about what team helps the national side more. Yeah, I don't like the fact that City have bought their way to the title. I reckon they've sold out and lost all identity. But United have kept their identity, and that identity, with everything that I've commented on and the sheer luck they generate, and the bias afforded them by the officials, is hateful.

I still don't believe this will filter english youth players into their side although it would help england players to come through via other clubs, which is fine- city's mind-set is now on winning everything, you won't do that waiting around or youth players to come through (they sell the ones that do) - they have unlimited funds to buy whoever they want so their priorities about youth won't be sincere

If we're seriously considering Souness we might as well just cut to the chase and drop down a league and give him the £4million pay off now and save everyone the pain of actually having to witness him fck us over for the next 18 months.
