Gary Parkinson suffers stroke

Post by Chrisfu » Sat Sep 11, 2010 12:00 pm

From the Beeb:
Blackpool youth coach Gary Parkinson is an "extremely critical" condition after suffering a stroke, according to a local newspaper report.

The former Burnley, Preston and Middlesbrough defender is being treated in Manchester's Hope Hospital after being switched from the Royal Bolton.

The Lancashire Telegraph said Parkinson, 42, had suffered a stroke.

A Blackpool statement read: "Head of youth Gary Parkinson is in an extremely critical condition."

The statement on the official club website continued: "The thoughts of all at Blackpool FC are with Gary's family at this extremely difficult time."

Parkinson began his career as a trainee at Everton, before moving to Middlesbrough in 1986, where he played more than 200 games.

After brief spells at Southend and Bolton he switched to Burnley, where he is best remembered for scoring the winning goal in the 1994 Division Two play-off final against Stockport.

Parkinson's last significant career move was to Preston, where his appearances were restricted by injury. He joined Blackpool in 2001, playing 24 games, before returning to Bloomfield Road as the head youth coach in 2006.

A Burnley spokesman said: "The club is very sorry to hear this news. We send both Gary and his family our best wishes at this difficult time and hope he can battle through."

A spokesman for Preston added: "Our thoughts go out to Gary and his family at this extremely difficult time."
Spent a year with us in the early 90's, didn't do anything to note, but still pulled on the white shirt on a few occasions. Either way, I hope me makes a quick and full recovery.

I vaguely recall him playing for us actually. Hope he makes it through OK and is back at Blackpool FC ASAP.

Left back with a great shot, a bit part player for us. At Burnley he is very well regarded.

Get well though Gary.

I always considered him to be a better player than to be knocking around at our place in the reserves. By all accounts a really nice lad as well. May I add my best wishes to those expressed.

Didn't he play the first half of the play-off game against Reading and have an absolute mare, thus paving the way for The Greatest Living Dutchman?

Hope he's alright.

(No that was Neil Macdonald wasn't it. Still hope he's alright.)

Best wishes from North London. A man a year younger than me, and fitter, suffering a debilitating attack, puts things into perspective.

Indeed. Parkinson was understudy to Phil Brown - an insult in itself.

Update on Gary's condition

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-me ... e-11313597

Blackpool Football Club youth coach Gary Parkinson is no longer in a critical condition after he suffered a serious stroke last week.

Mr Parkinson, 42, played for Preston, Burnley and Blackpool, and scored the winning goal in Burnley's division two play-off against Stockport in 1994.

The father-of-three was initially treated at Salford Royal Hospital after suffering the stroke on Thursday.

He was moved to Royal Bolton Hospital, where he remains seriously ill.

A spokesman for Blackpool FC said their thoughts were with his family.

Mr Parkinson, who is originally from Thornaby in North Yorkshire, began his career at Everton in 1985 before moving to Middlesbrough, Bolton Wanderers, then the three Lancashire clubs.
Never give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.
