Team goal of the season - The Guardian awards it to Bolton

Post by TKIZ! » Thu May 19, 2011 2:30 pm

Team goal of the season
Only two goals make my list for this one, both scored by the same club in the space of a fortnight last November. Perhaps surprisingly, that club is Bolton. First, in the same visit to Molineux that brought Johan Elmander's previously mentioned strike, came this Stuart Holden effort. Then, at home to Blackpool two weeks later, eight stunning passes led to Mark Davies scoring this one, which probably beats its rival by virtue of Elmander's backheel in the buildup (and Ivan Klasnic's fantastically unselfish flicked lay-off). When it comes to my personal goal of the season vote, those two and the Hernández header are locked in a three-way tussle. And I'll conclude by shoehorning in the pretty emphatically off-topic observation that both Andy Carroll and Fernando Torres scored what will probably be their best goal of the season against the team that went on to sign them in January (though only one of them has come up with anything to rival it since their big move, obviously).

Winner: Mark Davies v Blackpool
Pfffft.

Mark Davies v Blackpool so much better than the Elmander fluke.

That's an embarrassing comment mate. Credit where it's due. Go on, swallow the pride

I don't know pal, it could easily be serious coming from the source

Deadly serious.

Elmander couldn't recreate that in a thousand years = that's a fluke in my book

Fluke? Oh, how he happened to accidentally spin on the ball, fool all defenders and slot it in the corner.

Hate it when that happens

Raimundo Orsi scored one of the most iconic goals of World Cup history in the 1934 final, a dummy shot then a spank into the net. The day after the press filmed him for hours trying to recreate it, he couldn't. It wasn't a fluke. Diego Maradona could have played England another 20 times in 1986 and he wouldn't have scored THAT goal again (the good 'un). 99 times out of one hundred that Rooney volley against Newcastle, or the Bergkamp flick around Dabizas wouldn't have come off. That is what makes great goals great goals, that the vast majority of the time that sort of thing doesn't come off.

Nope, Rooney's was a toe-poke. As for this amazing overhead kick against city, it clearly came off his shin. Dirty scummite.

How can it be a fluke if he meant to do it??!

Jesus Christ, we genuinely can't give anybody any credit

We can give Barca credit. In fairness. And SKD, but not Elmander, and certainly not Nolan! Or was that someone else?

I would say Nolan got bags of credit before he turned shit for us.

Anyway, I'm going to bore everyone to death with tales of how Martin Petrov gets no credit for his sterling work and how he's the new scapegoat.

Against 10 men when the match was already won, with the majority of the passes in your own half. Nah,it's not as good. The last pass could have easily been the first, average goal at best.
