New deals for Jussi and MrsSKD's husband
Jussi, makes sense. Given we've sold Ali.
Kev? I'm not so sure. Unless his pace is as deceptive as Pedersen's, his workrate's second only to Matty Taylor and his goalscoring record has only been beaten by Gary Cahill because he's on flick-on duty primarily...

I've no problem with Davies being around beyond this next year.
I feel I might have a problem with how Coyle intends to use him over that period.

I reckon he'd make a cracking central defender. Tops in the air, tackles like Dave McKay,can use the ball and if the refs would give him a chance he'd be a great stopper. Okay, you can laugh now.

Along with Ricardo, modern legends.
I do worry as to SKD's ongoing effectiveness. And Jussi isn'gt getting any younger. So I hope we aren't pinning long term hopes on them, and that this is an admission that we can no longer afforrd replacements.

I think it is a recognition that in this particular window we need to strengthen elsewhere and can afford to replace them at a later date...Lord Kangana wrote:Along with Ricardo, modern legends.

Indeed. However, long before he went to Stoke I was banging the Kenwyne Jones drum. Maybe we didn't have the funds (or for so many other reasons). But he signed for Stoke for a reasonable fee. I can't believe we wouldn't at least have turned his head.
He isn't finished (like some believe), but increasingly he cannot take on the phenomenol work rate he has done, and he certainly he isn't the player he was.
Hope he proves me wrong. His contribution to the best period we've had for 50 years is unsurpassed.

That sums it up for me LK. Be amazing if he proves my niggling doubts wrong. I grinned like a Cheshire cat when the lad scored at Birmingham in the cup. And then he did his interview with ESPN then came back towards the whites and got the loudest cheers of the day. Brilliant.
But a large part of his game has been taken away. Refs give him nowt. The ball is going aerially less. He gets half of his goals from penalties. And he can't keep up with half the team.

Think he signed for Stoke for a reported £8m rising to £10m with add-ons. Think that was out of our reach last season...Lord Kangana wrote:Indeed. Wasn't it 2 years ago? Ie, not long after we signed Elmander?

Nah, last season I think..maybe
Agree with HRG - I'd have let Davies' (expensive) contract run down and let him have a year at Sheffield United or something before finishing........

Yes it was last season. And yes he was miles out of our reach. And I'm really not convinced he'd work in a Coyle team. Would have been ideal for Megson like, but there you go!

We signed Elmander 3 seasons ago. Jones moved last season. Two season gap.
Three seasons ago the Board stumped up money including the £8.2m for Elmander. Last summer we spent bugger all (I assume because we had bugger all).

As for a new contract for Davies. Hmmm, I'm really not sure.
I'd have thought Coyle's tenure was the ideal chance to actually move on and make sure that we can cope without Davies. Feels to me that clinging on year after year to an ageing striker who is never prolific is a bit dangerous as one day we'll suddenly have to go cold turkey. A gradual change makes more sense to me.

Don't agree with either but only time will tell.
Re: New deals for Jussi and MrsSKD's husband
If his team mates have a running joke with Davies that he always gets a one year deal, let's keep doing that and not start offering two years!
Jussi - OK with it now we've made the decision on Al-Habsi.

Re: New deals for Jussi and MrsSKD's husband
So long as we sign a striker or two to start weeding him out of the first team gradually I don't mind SKD staying for a year beyond this one, but would worry if he's still first choice by then.
Also, SKD is far too slow to be a center half.
