RIP Ralph Gubbins

Former Wanderers centre-forward died yesterday. Perhaps unfairly remembered as Nat's understudy, he scored two in the 1958 semi to set up our finest hour - but, because he didn't play in the final, never got a medal.

Rest in peace, faithful servant of the cause.

Was a decent player and saw him in a few games. Ray Parry era and another good old Wanderer sadly gone. R.I.P.

I learned this sad news earlier today. Some years ago I had the privilege of taking part in some pre-season training games that he took up at Turton. We were all about 20 years old, Ralph must've been in his mid-fifties. We were all running around like scalded cocks, he just held his position - trapped it - :pray: and played a worldy.

As a guy, he came over as being one of the most approachable, genuine, lovliest blokes that you could ever hope to meet.

It was an absolute pleasure and an honour to have made the acquaintance of a guy that's possibly our greatest ever unsung hero, and one that I'll never forget.

RIP Ralph Gubbins

A hard working second string who had many a good game in the first team, saw him play many many times. Fondly remembered, R.I.P.

He used to play golf at Regent Park in my day
