Captain of Australia?

Aye thought if Spearing started pre-season he would be signing on. We shall see!

I think J spearing has gone to be honest, I think maybe pastures new money is not going to be enough for him at bwfc. The captain of Australia looks a good bet.
Mark Milligan or Mile Jedinak? Milligan (32 in five weeks' time) is just coming off a two-year contract with a UAE club who paid a seven-figure release fee to get him. But he's still a lot likelier than Jedinak (367 days older), who last summer signed a three-year contract with Aston Villa, who last season spent £80m on transfers.

Nixon reported in the Sun yesterday that Parky was chasing Milligan, but so is Harry Redknapp with Birmingham's Chinese millions.

Did anyone watch Marc Iles live on Facebook earlier. He said Spearing has had better offers from other clubs (Wigan mentioned) and negotiations are close to concluding. Marc said Jay does not want to leave and is still speaking to Bolton, presumably hoping KA ups his offer. He said he might be writing an article later this evening if he hears anything but he was not hopefully that he will sign a new contract with us.

Also, Sammy Ameobi's wage demands are eye watering and way out of our league. The two West Ham lads are still on the radar but we might have to wait until after the pre-season games but that we are confident that they are coming.
Do not trust atoms. They make up everything.

Cheers Malc, interesting. It would be a sad end if Spearing drops a division for a higher wage, but it's his kids' college fund not mine. Ameobi I'm not amazingly bothered about – for all the understandable happy memories and vague notions of "ball retention", he got two goals and one assist in 20 Third Division games.

Bigger picture is, looks like we're entering a nervous time. The season starts six weeks on Sunday but the club is forced to play financial hardball and we'll have to hope Ken's negotiation skills and enforced brinksmanship aren't too damaging to Parky's teambuilding. It might be noted that barring Burke and a possible Spearing replacement, we've got the defensive unit in place and ready to be drilled, while later arrivals are likelier to be further forward and thus arguably easier to be accommodated/educated into the team's patterns.

I don't dislike Spearing, but his form for us has been relatively patchy since he signed up. Some days he looks pretty good at a Championship level, other's bang average and there were occasions where he looked like League 1 standard last year. I'd like to retain him, but as with Mavies only at a price we could afford.

Spearing loves the club and doesn't want to move...got that from a decent source I have no reason to doubt. But he's got better offers for sure. Think he will stay local so Wigans a real possibility.

We can replace him, we already have Pratley Vela and Karacan. But can we get someone as good (and yes i have him as a reasonable champ / decent league 1 player).

Hadn't seen it mentioned elsewhere. Connor Wilkinson has left permanently for Gillingham. I wish him well but I'll be very surprised if he does well there.

Of the ones we dont want does that just leave Amos on a long term deal?

Chris Taylor has another year. Hopefully he'll get a move, because there's no chance of him getting a game in the Championship.

It would be nice to get rid of Amos, but his rumoured £16k pw wages might mean the best we can hope for is someone takes him on loan and picks up a percentage of his wages. My biggest fear is he will integrate back into the squad, win his place back, and then at a crucial part of the season, start letting in speculative 30 yard shots that are just off centre of the goal, but at the same time appearing to make a valiant effort and giving the impression that the shot was struck with ridiculous power.

We need to get rid of Taylor, and Proctor too. I can't figure out why Proctor isn't better than he is, he seems to have all the tools, but just can't figure out how to use them.

Nobody's on a long-term deal, really. Or rather, nobody's got long left. The list, which I'll update when Buckley's confirmed, is here but in short:

2018: Howard, Alnwick, Beevers, Wheater, Dervite, Derik, Alex Perry, Karacan, Pratley, Morais, Chris Taylor, Proctor
2019: Amos, Little, Andrew Taylor, Vela, ALF, Madine

If you mean long-term deals handed out in the Cwazy Days – ie The Problem Contracts - then there's Amos (two years left) and Pratley (one). Parkinson seems happy with Pratley. We're trying to shift Proctor, on whom things have gone worryingly quiet, and Chris Taylor, on whom things have always been worryingly quiet.

Not absolutely sure why, but part of me almost wishes we'd kept James Henry...

No, I'm not absolutely sure why either :D

I wanted Henry to come good, and some of his sub cameos helped open up the odd team, but I'd hope we can find better.

List has been tweaked to include latest arrivals and thinned down from who's gone to who's still here; the list of the departed – all 28 of 'em – is higher up the thread. Also tweaked in light of Iles' interesting BN piece on who might come through the Academy – and who would count against the embargo numbers.

2018
Mark Howard
Ben Alnwick
Mark Beevers
David Wheater*
Dorian Dervite*
Reece Burke (loan from West Ham, initially until January)
Antonee Robinson (loan from Everton until January)
Derik Osede
Alex Perry (pro; presumably a one-year deal but not stated)
Jem Karacan*
Darren Pratley
Josh Cullen (loan from West Ham, initially until January)
Filipe Morais*
Chris Taylor
Sammy Ameobi
Adam Armstrong (loan until January from Newcastle, where he's contracted until 2020)
Jeff King (pro)
Connor Hall (pro)
Third-year scholars: Harry Brockbank, Jack Earing, Cole Lonsdale, Ryan White

2019
Ben Amos
Jake Turner (pro)
Mark Little
Stephen Darby
Andrew Taylor
Josh Vela
Will Buckley
Adam Le Fondre*
Gary Madine

Contracts until June unless otherwise stated. Corrections and clarifications (with citations) always welcome.
* - deals known to have extension "options"
"pro" - youngsters on professional deals rather than scholarships, and who therefore count towards the FL embargo (source: BN)

I feel really sorry for Parky right now. He's expected to keep us going, has two critical midfielders out for 3 and 6 weeks and had just a bag of marbles and a rusty penknife to trade with in the transfer window. On top of that he could lose his job if the club fail when it's hardly his fault. Hope he/we get a bit of luck soon.
