Do we really have no one under contract beyond June 2020, Mr barnet?

Would that be unique in t' Football League?

As far as I'm aware, yes; each name has a link to proof, and although I suppose I could have missed some, I don't think so.

Not sure on that one. It would take the thick end of a week to check properly (or a strong hour on something only partially reliable like Transfermarkt).

It wouldn't astonish me if there are a couple of others like this – essentially who haven't offered a three-year deal since last summer at least. As I say, it makes financial sense and allows a club to be footloose, especially if they frequently change managers (and/or divisions); it makes less sense for long-term building, but so does frequently changing managers (and/or divisions). One could argue we should have a couple on longer deals but it takes two parties to sign, so it may not be the club withholding.

I wonder who our last three-year+ contract was awarded to? Derik? Amos? Pratley?

I think I like the idea, particularly in the crazy world of professional football with it's ridiculous salary levels. I'd like to see the salary bill paid last season to players contracted to the 92 that didn't make a first team appearance for their home club all term.

That might need longer than the thick end of a week!

It would also contradict confidentiality clauses and such, whereas a contract's length (if not plumpness) if generally public knowledge.

But it would be lapped up by some or other thundering newspaper, angrily headlined with What A Waste Of Money or somesuch.

With some judicious work there's a story there then.

Get on it, Man. It'll sell to some slimy rag. Happy to act on your behalf.

Couldn't help myself. Here's a representation of how many players each Championship club has contracted beyond next summer (according to Transfermarkt). Green means 2021, yellow 2022, red 2023.

Image

Interesting, this, in that it can cut both ways. Up at the top you've got Brentford, the very model of a well-run 'trading' club, along with similarly-minded Preston and Bristol City - but you've also recently relegated sides (Stoke, West Brom) plus shit-flingers like Leeds and Forest. Down at the bottom, it looks like QPR and Hull have managed to get most of their long-termers off the books, while Rotherham and Millwall might be doing a similar thing to us.

And yes, I know you asked about the entire Football League, but give us a chance...

That does seem to show there's more than one cat skinning method. 7 clubs with a full 11 contracted to the end of 21/22 season, forward planning or foolhardy, time will tell. I know where my money is.

Looks as though The Hoops have got over Harry's excesses. Then they go and engage The Wally, good golly!

Per Transfermarkt, they're for Moritz Bauer, Lasse Sorensen and Oghenekaro Etebo. Bauer is a right-back they signed in January on a four-and-a-half-year deal just after sacking Mark Hughes but before the 1.55am-nightclub-pickup hiring of Lambert; undeterred by this, they extended his contract this summer. Etebo is the busy Nigeria midfielder they signed for £6.35m this summer. Sorensen is an 18-year-old midfielder who's spent a couple of years in their youth ranks and made his debut in last season's final-game dead rubber against Swansea.

In other words, they handed out all those contracts this summer. OK lads, your choice.

How would this sit with a two year transfer embargo?

Josh Vela announces he will leave this summer.

https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/1 ... ting-club/
“Hello guys, just a quick announcement I will be leaving Bolton Wanderers when my contract expires,” he wrote. “I had 17 glorious years there, came all the through the academy and then eventually went on to play in the first team, was an absolute privilege to play for the club.

“Loved every second of it, thank you to the fans for the support over the years through good and bad times. No matter what anybody says I always gave 100 per cent in that shirt in every game I played.

“Just want to thank all the staff for all their effort that they have put in over the years, and I know how it feels to them when a lad from the academy goes on to play in the first team, I’ve made some friends for life at the club and will always be a supporter of that club.

“It’s hard for me to leave the club that I have been at for 17 years, but the time has come for a new challenge for me and my family. This season hasn’t gone to plan but I’m sure the club will get back to where it belongs, I’ve enjoyed the ups and downs - a lot more ups.

“But that’s football. I want to wish everyone at the club, all the very best for the future, especially the fans because they deserve it for the continued support. All the very best, Josh Vela.”

And Parky reveals that others refused to play at Forest because they’ve already turned in their badges.

https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/1 ... parkinson/
“I have been in football for more than 30 years, and some of the things that have happened this season are happening to me for the first time.

“There are some players who have put in their two-week notice, I think some of that has been out in the media, and there are other lads who have offers from elsewhere who, naturally, didn’t want to play.

“We also had some genuine injuries with David Wheater, Jason Lowe, Luke Murphy and Mark Beevers.

“We were left with a bare 18 but I think they showed good character, and that is important.

“Firstly the lads who put their notices in – if they play and get injured, they are not insured. You have to respect that.

“Those who might move on elsewhere didn’t want to play, which we have had to deal with, but I want to concentrate on those who did, and I thank them for that.”

Had a bit more of a dig into the squad regarding the refuseniks.

If we discount the matchday 18 and the four "genuine injuries" Parky cites (Wheavers, Lowe, Murphy), I make it we're left with eight other first-team squad members - but that includes Ben Amos (out on loan) and Joe Williams, who was injured in late April and declared "likely to be out for the season".

That leaves:
• Pawel Olkowski (transfer request handed in)
• Sammy Ameobi (strongly rumoured to have had enough)
• Josh Vela (presumably hence the quick Twitter announcement this morning)
• Marc Wilson (came on as an early sub at Blackburn but not, IIRC, injured himself)
• Yanic Wildschut (did he ever get paid?)
• Ben Alnwick (something of a surprise, this one; but hey ho)

Make of that what you will – and I back their right to strike, given their treatment – but I thought it might be of interest. For clarity, none of these players have come out and said they refused to play, but unless they were undeclared injured it's a reasonable assumption.

What about Oz? He was on the bench - or ballboy ? - but unused. Surely as one of our 5 contracted players he should be getting a start. We're relegated already...

Makes you wonder about Lowe and Murphy whether they would have refused too?
Leaving us with ST Magennis and GK Remi playing piggy in the middle with Oz as the three amigos of League 1.
What could've happened; did.
