Last I looked, open play excludes FKs, pens and possibly even throwsWorthy4England wrote: ↑Fri Dec 29, 2023 7:46 pmGrand spot, mate. Does the free-kick count as the first pass in the open play move? If they do include those two, then I'm not necessarily shocked.

I'm actually after some garden pods at the minute, if anyone has any recommendations
I'm just wondering if we know what the terms are for the extension clause on Baxter's contract. I can't remember ever hearing.

I only saw 'initial two year deal' from looking at the announcement of his signing so guess it isn't public knowledge.

Re: Contract expiry
In relation to the above: I don't normally concern myself with salaries etc, prepared to trust the manager and club, but Baxter on £6000 a week, and Coleman on £1100 for doing the same job? That raised my eyebrows?

Not sure about where the numbers have come from, but there's a world of difference between having the same "job title" and "doing the same job, to the same level of capability/competence, for the same amount of time."

Re: Contract expiry
It's a disparity, but Baxter came from Chelsea and was chased by Champions League clubs; Coleman had, the previous summer, been released by Rochdale. I want them both to do as well as possible, but one is clearly worth more than the other.

Extreeeeeeeeeemely sceptical about those sites, which are usually clickbait ad-servers copy-pasting guesses from Football Manager.

Re: Contract expiry
I'm sure the club are aware, but there's a few players who'd be starting next season in the final year of their contract and who I'd really rather we didn't end up losing on a free.
Perhaps more pertinently, I'd imagine the players themselves and their respective agents are also aware.

Re: Contract expiry
I'd imagine that those players and their respective agents are very likely to want to wait to see which division we'll be in before committing.nicholaldo wrote: ↑Thu Feb 22, 2024 5:38 amI'm sure the club are aware, but there's a few players who'd be starting next season in the final year of their contract and who I'd really rather we didn't end up losing on a free.

I doubt there's much conjecture around the Club being aware. What I would say, is they seem to have been pretty good recently tying players down we want to keep.The_Gun wrote: ↑Thu Feb 22, 2024 8:17 amI'd imagine that those players and their respective agents are very likely to want to wait to see which division we'll be in before committing.nicholaldo wrote: ↑Thu Feb 22, 2024 5:38 amI'm sure the club are aware, but there's a few players who'd be starting next season in the final year of their contract and who I'd really rather we didn't end up losing on a free.

Re: Contract expiry
Agree with this. I reckon that if promotion is achieved then some of our first team fringe players will be sold to make room for newer marquee signings. In turn some of those players who are definite first teamers might become fringe players themselves as a new pecking order emerges. So whilst those approaching their final year might well be waiting to see what division we're in next season they could also be hedging their bets and want to sign the best contract they can now. All just pure speculation of courseWorthy4England wrote: ↑Thu Feb 22, 2024 8:46 amI doubt there's much conjecture around the Club being aware. Re: Contract expiry
Each player is of course in a slightly different situation. Some, like Rico, Baxter, Toal and Sheehan are likely quite confident that they are Championship level players, and may be hesitant to sign new deals prior to the end of the season, even if we baked in significant wage rises for promotion.
The likes of Jones, JDC, Iredale and Williams would perhaps be more willing to commit to new deals sooner, as their ability to step up a level is less certain.

Re: Contract expiry
Agree with pretty much all the above. The club's been good at tying down what it sees as assets with early extensions - latest being Morley, but if memory serves we also did Thomo and Dion early this season.
Anyways. What's different now is that the club is very definitely on a promotion hunt; the previous two seasons it was a hope, then a possibility, now it's a definite target. It was also a target in Evatt's first season, but the gap between wages in D4 and D3 is significantly smaller than D3/D2. Significantly. Which makes each contract decision harder, with the potential for a high player request, and tougher juggling for the club. What would you pay a potential asset like Forrester compared to a solid but older pro like Iredale? etc and so on, throughout the squad, in an industry not known for salary secrecy.
It's possible that we could be working on twin-track contracts with different pay structures per division. I would hope and expect we're doing that anyway: if we go up, there's no certainty we'll stay up, and we seem too savvy to cripple ourselves again. But that might be easier to negotiate from fresh in summer with a relegation clause (wage reduction, release-triggering fee) than to do it now.
And some of the 9 players lapsing in June 2025 (listed below) are far more likely than others to be retained for a second Champo season. As noted by The Gun, I'd say the priorities are obviously Rico, Bax, Toal and Sheehan. I'd guess Gethin and Iredale are likelier than most to sign twin-track contracts, as might JDC and Williams (if offered). So might Coleman but you suspect he's the name on this list we're most likely to want to upgrade in 18 months' time.
Nathan Baxter
Joel Coleman
Gethin Jones
Eoin Toal
Ricardo Santos
Jack Iredale
Josh Dacres-Cogley
Randell Williams
Josh Sheehan
