Each player is of course in a slightly different situation. Some, like Rico, Baxter, Toal and Sheehan are likely quite confident that they are Championship level players, and may be hesitant to sign new deals prior to the end of the season, even if we baked in significant wage rises for promotion.

The likes of Jones, JDC, Iredale and Williams would perhaps be more willing to commit to new deals sooner, as their ability to step up a level is less certain.
All accepting of course that none of them think they are more important than the club (yes, I know, they are professionals, but the word "career" has firmly replaced what use to be "Job". ) Ambition is a fine and accepted thing, but a touch of loyalty always does it for me. It will be interesting to see....Que Sera Sera...

Figures for salaries in the Champo are what? 10-30 grand a week? vs League 1 at, I dunno maybe 4-10k per week? Your appreciation of my loyalty is only going to get you so far, TD. If I'm on 7 and offered 20, I'm probably taking the 20. That's nothing to do with whether the Club is more important than me or not. :-)

Age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill!

And the key to a result is a good :kettle:

Toal signs a new 3yr deal;

Super news. That leaves the following lapsing in summer 2025: Baxter, Coleman, Jones, Santos, Iredale, Dacres-Cogley, Williams, Sheehan. Next priorities presumably Santos, Sheehan and Baxter.

That's great news on Toal.

I imagine we'll likely have to find out which league we'll be playing in next season before we cam tie down Santos, Sheehan, and Baxter.

Aye, unless they accept twin-track contracts which pay more in the higher tier.

Toal is four years younger than Santos and Sheehan, and a few months younger than Baxter, who of course came from Chelsea and turned down Champions League football to come here. You’d imagine he would want promotion before extending, and might even request some sort of relegation release agreement.

Santos and Sheehan arguably more likely to stick around whatever division, but they’ll be aware they turn 30 by summer 2025 so this might be their last very good contract. Unless of course they lead us to the Premier… :D

Delighted with the Toal renewal, really deserved.

Baxter's deal's likely to be on the cards and probably in a good place given he seems to be happy with his time here. Depends on where we finish and how much that impacts his desires to progress. We certainly seem a good bet to be heading in the right direction and training him.

Would be nice to have Sheehan get a new contract, i'm sure they'll all be under consideration.

Am I correct that we are required to produce our retained list this week?

Good question. I've seen it written that we have four days (ie tomorrow) but I can't confirm and the EFL rulebook is impenetrable on the matter.

EDIT bit more digging, seeing "four days" a bit more for playoff teams, and it may not be coinkydink that Norwich (eliminated Friday) named theirs today (Regan Riley released)

CONFIRMATION Four days, per https://www.efl.com/governance/regulations/ - which is tomorrow.

A week till the season starts, time to see where we are. Changes since the last list (in, er, Feb):
• Toal extended to 2027
• Jerome, Bod, John released
• Signings: Forino, Southwood, Lolos, Arfield, Schön

JUNE 2025
Nathan Baxter (8/11/98)
Joel Coleman (26/9/95)
Gethin Jones (13/10/95)
Ricardo Santos (18/6/95)
Jack Iredale (2/5/96)
Josh Dacres-Cogley (12/3/96)
Scott Arfield (1/11/88)
Randell Williams (30/12/96)
Josh Sheehan (30/3/95)

JUNE 2026
Luke Southwood (6/12/97) - club has +1yr option
Will Forrester (29/06/01)
George Johnston (1/9/98)
Kyle Dempsey (17/9/95)
Carlos Mendes Gomes (14/11/98)
Victor Adeboyejo (12/1/98)
Dan Nlundulu (5/2/99)
Dion Charles (7/10/95)

JUNE 2027
Eoin Toal (15/2/99)
Chris Forino (26/04/00)
George Thomason (12/1/01)
Aaron Morley (27/2/00)
Szabolcs Schön (27/9/00) - club has +1yr option
Aaron Collins (27/5/97)
Klaidi Lolos (6/10/00)

---------------------------------
B-team & young pros, in descending age order:
Conor Carty (25/5/02) contracted to 2025
Luke Hutchinson (1/9/02) contracted to 2025 - loaned to Marine till June
Luke Matheson (3/10/02) contracted to 2025
Nelson Khumbeni (14/10/02) contracted to 2025 +1
*Max Conway (5/9/03) contracted to 2025 +1
**Elis Litherland (5/5/04) contracted to 2025 +1
**Ben Andreucci (5/10/04) contracted to 2025 +1
**Charlie Hayes-Green (30/12/04) contracted to 2025
***Noah Halford (1/1/05, allegedly) contracted to 2024 +1 - this was extended summer 2024, length unknown
***Trevon Bryan (8/3/05)
***Dubem Eze (8/3/05) contracted to 2026+1
***Sonny Sharples-Ahmed (23/3/05) contracted to 2024 +1 - this was extended summer 2024, length unknown
***Ajay Weston (20/6/05) contracted to 2026
***Sam Inwood (17/9/05) contracted to 2026

First-year pros: (presumably, but not definitely, born 2006)
Jack Dallimore turned pro 2024, contract length unknown, probably one year
Sean Hogan turned pro 2024, contract length unknown, probably one year
Joe Toole turned pro 2024, contract length unknown, probably one year
James Westwood turned pro 2024, contract length unknown, probably one year
Harrison Fleury turned pro 2024, contract length unknown, probably one year

*Stars indicate underage players; number of stars indicates number of seasons they will remain underage, assuming EFL age rules don't change. For season 2024/25 an Under 21 Player is someone born on or after 1 January 2003 – so Carty, Hutchinson, Matheson and Khumbeni are all overage, Conway is in his last underage season, but Trevon Bryan has two more after the 2024/25 season.

We have no players under the age of 23 that are in the first team picture. A slight concern for the future.

Yes, but that's a feature of the academy being gutted and not having recovered.

We have Conway and Matheson on the fringes, but at best it's a year too early for both.

If we are signing a few more players then we'll have to get into the U21 market. That may be loans or permanent transfers.

The lack of an academy pipeline hurts and will have to change in the long term.

Not contracts, but related: the club has confirmed the squad numbers for the new season.
.

.
• Vic takes Bod’s 9, which suits him.
• Collins moves in from 28 to Paris’s 19, which is also quite a nice number for a forward.
• Lolos takes Ogbeta’s 17, which to me feels a better number for a forward than a wingback.
• Southwood takes the 20 shirt rarely used by Ramsay.
• Caleb Taylor’s 21 goes to Forino, his replacement Spare Big Man.
• Schön takes 23, unoccupied since Lloyd Isgrove.
• The only high-quality number left open is Vic’s old 14 (Cruyff! Titi Henry! Jack Hobbs!), after which next-lowest is 24 (unused since Kachunga).
• Nobody has taken Ashworth’s 26 or Jerome’s 35, which isn’t really surprising.

Collins clearly has eyes on the #10, which I believe he's worn at his previous clubs. 2+8 to 1+9.
