.........after they were good (they played for us!)

Post by Seamus' good leg » Thu Feb 21, 2013 1:02 pm

A quiet day on the boards today, so I thought I'd add to the discussion.
I was chatting to my Premier obsessed son as to how in the past 'famous' players didn't retire @ the top but had to earn their living in the lower reaches of the league. Which got me thinking; what's the best side we could have fielded of players who previously were in their prime, but who later on have turned out in the shirt for us (and in some cases, still done a bloody good job)?
Here's a start (with apologies for the inclusion of former rags, some dodgy positioning, and also if anything like this has been posted before).

You seem to have missed a certain Gary Speed.

And I'd have thought Sammy Lee should be the first name on the teamsheet.

Can't disagree with Speedo! - as for the boy in a suit @ a scouse wedding, I reckon he's even lower down the list than other luminaries such as Brian Kidd!

Vincent Candela must be on that list..

Bruno N'Gotty?!

Both did well for us, but were real stars in the pomp

Nice call ... except he never actually played for us, did he ?
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Good calls, except for John McGovern.

Arguably, given he went on to become PFA Player of the Year after leaving us, was the still rather good even when with us Peter Reid.

Same with Frannie Lee. Good, but went on to be a great.

Not convinced about Anelka either, he probably played for us in his prime.

And left us for Chelsea!

I'll add in Robert Fleck!

Not a chance on Anelka, Okocha or Campo! Later two at the best for us, and Anelka not far off. Must say thread title to me implies they weren't good when they played for us, so no Youri Candela Hierro etc (all past their peak, but still very much good, and in the top league).

Jardel the most obvious in my time, his goal record was unreal!

Gowling for sure.

Not sure about Frank. Division 1 top goalscorer with us in 79/80 suggests he was still pretty good at that time.
Hope is what keeps us going.
