Has Reality Not matched Expectation for Dougie ?

Post by StaffsTrotter » Fri Aug 30, 2013 2:13 pm

In an attempt to move the topic out of the transfer rumour thread

Did DF come to BWFC with eyes wide open or naively shut in respect of the quality of our existing players and what funds he would have to operate in the transfer market ?

or was he misled

or did he mislead the club

I'm just wondering whether Dougie might be interested in a certain Romanian International defender.

nice one!

just to clear up the "Gartside has disappeared" theory.. he hasn't - he gave an interview to talksport just the day before yesterday..

in which he said some interesting stuff about hamann - which might have been ill advised!

yeah I thought that and its been picked up by quite a few of the papers.

Is it fraud or mis-selling. Any lawyers on here ?

imagine the irony if the last 400k of this seasons transfer budget has to go to City !

I doubt he left Palace because he thought we'd give him buttons in the transfer market to spend. Lets not forget he's said part of the reason he left Palace was their reluctance to bring in the players he wanted.

I don't think he's shy of asking for new players to be honest.

when dougie arrived - he said this:

"The club is geared up to getting back into the Premier League. There is an impressive setup and structure in place, and a first team squad of undoubted quality."

he was happy with the structure, the setup and the squad (which he thought was of undoubted quality).
He was hardly going to say we were shite was he.

He's not saying it now though is he?

My point is that IF it is Dougie's fault and the squad is perfectly fine to get promoted, then Eddie has it within his powers to change that. He's employed Dougie so is he backing his manager's judgement or not?

that depends what dougie's judgement is. if he has said two opposite things - then how do we know which is true? and how is eddie supposed to know?

i take it you realise that if we are strapped for cash then it's not a great idea to sack your manager and spend a wad of cash on compensation?

it's not up to you - or me - or even dougie how much cash eddie wants to pump into the club - it's up to eddie, surely?

Nothing would surprise me but surely some discussion takes place at the end of last season at which the manager is given an idea of money available. Sure special requests will be made for injuries or if a particular player becomes available. Ongoing dialogue then happens during the window.

Find it hard to believe that DF has his list and has no idea of whether santa sorry eddie will bring it until player x rolls up in the car park.

He didn't mention anything about the current situation though. He wasn't asked so I'm not claiming some massive conspiracy. Just that we haven't had the usual pre-season chairman's perspective. Unless I've missed it?

I think it's the right decision to prevent Freedman from buying players at the moment. We do need players in the short term because of injuries but in the long term, we have a squad which doesn't really need much improvement, so I think the best option would be the loan market. We aren't in a great position financially and I don't want to see us bring in three or four players now, who end up being costly squad players when everyone is fully fit again. Our most obvious weakness is central defence and whilst we'd all like to bring in someone like Dawson, if it doesn't happen, it shouldn't be a big deal because we already have plenty of quality in the squad. Wheater, Knight, Ream and Mills might not be perfect, and I'd love to see Dawson signed with us permanently, but it's still a very strong four for this league which would make the majority of other Championship managers envious.

I'm not against us bringing players in, because short term injuries still need to be replaced, but I'd be against us buying replacements. The loan market is the best option for us, especially if we can have the option to cancel those loans in January.

The other thing to consider is whether the board should be backing Freedman at all. Considering how results have been going for us, if things don't improve, we might have another manager by January and it should be them who are given financial backing from the board. If Davies and Gartside had 100% belief in Freedman, they'd be backing him right now but the problem for him is that he's not given any reason to have faith in him. Assuming we spent £5m now and Freedman leaves by January, that new manager will want backing too and is Davies expected to shell out another few million after just buying a handful of players the previous window? We need to be careful of how we spend the money we have and giving Freedman backing now might not be the right decision in a few months time.

Look at the quality other sides have. QPR probably have one of the strongest defences in the league, yet they start Clint Hill, who is awful, and Richard Dunne, who when he was released, the overwhelming majority of our fans said that he wouldn't start for us. Then look at Wigan, with Caldwelland Perch...that isn't a step up on the players we have. I could go through some of the other teams in the league but I'll ask you; which squads in the league have a better first choice and back up pairings at centre back? We quite clearly have one of the best in the league, if not the best.

I would say our defensive record with our current pairings muddies the clarity you mention

You're talking about are centre backs because of how they use to play

1. Wheater. Decent for boro in the prem ( that was 5 years ago) I still hold hope he'll come good!
2. Knight.... no fvcking way you're gonna convince me he's better than most in this league! I suppose it's because he has 2 england caps?
3. Mills. Decent for reading a few years ago been lost ever since
4. Ream one game and you think he's Hierro

No thanks! Get off bloody football manager lad

Oh and I wasn't one of the one's that said Dunne wouldn't get in our team! I said we should sign him. Old but he's a leader which is exactly what we need

Clint hill.... remind who came out on top defensively when we played QPR
